paypal

it menas there are no fees for the seller to pay, but you lose the (whatever you think of the quality) buyer protection

you also pay the fees
im not a great lover of gift as you have no come back if the goods are not as described or never arrive.
i find a better way is to pay the other persons fees ie:- 4% on top of the price (so if its £100 pay £104) at least you are then protected.
although as a lot will tell you the protection is not as good as they say
saying that i have done 3 disputes and got my money back on all 3 times

as always the best bit of advice i can give is buy the seller first!

Using gift,no one pays fees.:)
If done with your funds

When you use your bank account or PayPal balance, it is free to send money domestically in the UK for personal payments.

However, if you choose to fund your payment by credit or debit card, the recipient will have to pay a small fee. Alternatively you, as the sender of a personal payment, can now elect to pay this fee yourself (for example if you are sending a gift, paying a personal debt, or purchasing a product). For more details on Send Money fees, please click here.

I find the idea that anyone would think they would need "protecting" somewhat offensive.

Firstly.. in any case there is no "not as described" protection for anything off-Ebay
Secondly.. in not recieved cases.. any decent buyer will refund and put in a claim. In any event.. off-Ebay you can only claim back -if- the seller still has the funds in their Paypal account.

I resent having to pay 4% "protection" racket when no one needs "protecting" when I sell!

But someone with no feedback selling a £500 lens, people may obviously want some sort of protection (no matter how good or bad) as they cannot tell if its an unscrupulous seller.

The best protection by any means is going to pick up in person with a friend.

Off Ebay there is no useful protection. Read the Paypal small print carefully.

An unscrupulous seller would drain their Paypal account, so your reimbusement would be a big fat £0.

Meeting in person or a cheque (that way you get a name and address) is best.

Paypal doesn't offer any real protection "off Ebay" so for a forum such as this, there is no point in using Paypal for "protection".

What does that mean?
it means check the seller out first
if a seller has 100 sales and all went fine then the odds are all will be well
now if someone new offers a £2000 lens for £500 and they have no contact details or only a mobile then you run the risk.

A personal transaction involves sending money (initiated from the “Personal” tab of the “Send Money” flow) to, and receiving money into your PayPal Account from, friends and family without making a purchase (that is, the payment is not for goods or services). If you are selling goods or services, you may not ask the buyer to send you a personal transaction payment for the purchase. If you do so, PayPal may remove your ability to accept any or all payments for personal transactions.

I never knew that!

You realise you can buy ebay accounts with feedback already established

http://www.paypalsucks.com/forums/showthread.php?fid=16&tid=26178

i didnt mean ebay only
i use a lot of watch forums as well as owning a parrot website where we have a sales section
and yes i do know about being able to buy ebay accounts with feedback but i dont see why anyone should wish to do that if they are legit
this forum has a feedback subforum so you can check the seller but most dont!
what they have is good/bad deals sections and its too late when someone has been scammed
and i have seen this happen for expensive items.
hence why you buy the seller first

I avoid paypal as much as possible and only use it on ebay, because I don't like their business practices. Every forum based sale is done by bank transfer. My first private lens purchase involved me sending £1000 to someone by bank transfer, I didn't worry about it at all.

If anyone felt they needed "protection" when buying from me I'd suggest they found another seller, not that I will sell here in any case.

i find it interesting that views and attitudes towards payments differ on this forum to other forums i use.
nothing negative against anyone here by the way.
