as always the best bit of advice i can give is buy the seller first!
you also pay the fees
huh? me and the gf use gift to transfer funds between paypal accounts.. no fees paid ever..
Sometimes you have to pay fees- depending on the way that the money is transferred (eg. from credit card etc)
But someone with no feedback selling a £500 lens, people may obviously want some sort of protection (no matter how good or bad) as they cannot tell if its an unscrupulous seller.
The best protection by any means is going to pick up in person with a friend.
it means check the seller out firstWhat does that mean?
im not a great lover of gift as you have no come back if the goods are not as described or never arrive.
I find the idea that anyone would think they would need "protecting" somewhat offensive.
Firstly.. in any case there is no "not as described" protection for anything off-Ebay
Secondly.. in not recieved cases.. any decent buyer will refund and put in a claim. In any event.. off-Ebay you can only claim back -if- the seller still has the funds in their Paypal account.
I resent having to pay 4% "protection" racket when no one needs "protecting" when I sell!
it means check the seller out first
if a seller has 100 sales and all went fine then the odds are all will be well
A personal transaction involves sending money (initiated from the Personal tab of the Send Money flow) to, and receiving money into your PayPal Account from, friends and family without making a purchase (that is, the payment is not for goods or services). If you are selling goods or services, you may not ask the buyer to send you a personal transaction payment for the purchase. If you do so, PayPal may remove your ability to accept any or all payments for personal transactions.

You realise you can buy ebay accounts with feedback already established
