Yes
I am selling something in the classified & buyer asked to pay by PPG which I have no objection with but providing I incur no costs.
I hope I am right in thinking I will not - will I?

Also what do I need to give the seller so he can make the payment as I have logged into my PP account & can't see any reference numbers for my accounts.

So me confused & hope this is in the right section!!!!!!!!

You will need to give the buyer the email address connected to your Paypal account and provided that he uses Paypal Gift you will not have any costs to pay.

Al thank you so much - appreciated (y)

Just remember you have no comeback if thing go wrong. Gift payment counts as getting around the fee system for services/goods so Paypal will refuse to assist.

So be confident your buyer is genuine.

Very true, and you're right to point it out Neil. But personally I feel more confident in accepting (or using) paypal gift on here than I would on (say) eBay.
No guarantee of course, as always it's all down to judgement of who you're dealing with.

Actually, Paypal Gift should be perfectly safe for a seller.
There is no comeback for the buyer if something goes wrong.

As you said, Paypal won't get involved so there would be no way for the buyer to get their money back.

There are no fees for PPG as long as the buyer uses their Paypal balance (so not a car payment). If they don't have enough in their Paypal account then they can choose whether they pay the fee themselves or the seller pays it so you should ask them to pay any fees.

Thanks all - in the end I accepted PPG that came immediately, last evening but only low amount, (Not a Nikon D4 :)) but may be my age I tend to be suspicious of PP & EBay

If Paypal is linked to your bank account you don't need to have a balance in the Paypal account. There are no fees unless cards are used as you say.

I have a separate bank account for Paypal in which I keep a balance of about £50 and just add to it by the amount I know Paypal will be taking.

One thing to remember though - if you are a newish Paypal account holder, or you haven't used the account for a while - they may insist on taking money via a card. Also, if you are a seller they may keep your funds for up to 21 days (IIRC) before releasing them!

I'm also 'of an age' - quite a biggie this June ;)

Well, maybe not that big - but a milestone nevertheless ;) I'll be celebrating my three score and ten (hopefully) :)

It seems very common to not trust Paypal but I doubt that it's any different to paying by cheque, cash or with a debit card in terms of transaction problems.

It's just another victim of problems being posted on the internet and people believing it to be the norm. The problem is that people don't post reports about transactions which went without a hitch - of which there must be many millions by now.

Steve.

Its a bit lke the holiday hotel reviews...if you look hard enough you will eventually find a bad review amongst the pages and pages of good reviews... and not go :)

I'm not sure what the risk to the seller is in this context, as he will have the money as a "gift" before dispatching the item.

I don't sell here so it's not an issue for me, but I am curious.

If you use your bank account then Paypal may send the payment as an e-cheque which takes a while to clear.

I've just done a quick test and it looks as though they've removed the fees for debit card payment to other UK accounts.
