Yes
not sure where to put this, but wanted to to warn folks anyway.

Last thursday night (luckily for me i was on late and had msn on)

I recieved an instant email saying somthign like
"your gift payment of £500 has been successfully sent to Phillip Hesse"

I imeddiatly logged on to Paypal, and indeed saw a payment of £517 sent as a gift payment to Phillip Hessse at phesse80@yahoo.co.uk.

In the time it took me to find the fraud department phone number, this person had deleted the transaction from the list (remember you can only delete from the summary page, if you go to "all transactions, it will be there")

Paypal are investigating, and it has been passed on to the police, so hopefully this thief will pay the price but I just wanted to warn folks about this.

In my own case, my Paypal is linked to my credit card, so I actually have another layer of fraud departments if paypal let me down (heard some bad rumours about paypals fraud procedures lately) although of course my main credit card is now locked untill a new one arrives in 5 - 7 days. Good job I have done most of my xmas shopping early this year.

Although this sounds like a nightmare (and it is) the reason I shop on my CC and not straight from the bank debit card is for that extra layer of security

I have no idea how this person got my paypal details, as I certainly have never given them to anybody, my only answer is that he has somehow hacked in to the account.

So, any body reading this, please please be extra vigilant with your paypal (and credit card) accounts

My cc company phoned a couple of days ago to ask if I had suddenly started trying to buy large amounts of downloads from Napster  :suspect:

The card in question only ever gets used for online photo-related purchases, so it looks as if there's a leak somewhere......

flash, mind me asking, what CC you use (just to se if it is same as mine, maybe the problem is there)

Capital One. Their fraud team seemed pretty good, was a bit worried when the initial call came from the Indian call centre though....

I had an email the other day saying payment accepted for some theatre tickets in Canada

The fella says its a fake, but it still made me panic :(

ah ok, funily enough, my back up card is capital one main one is mbna though. once had my wallet stolen and the capital one card maxed out( which was doubly anoying as i had just payed it off in full the month before), the fraud department dealt with it but i had to pay £30 for the privalage of being pickpocketed. that was about 6 or 7 years ago though

My bank account was cleaned out just over a week ago. If I hadn't checked my balance online before going to the NEC I wouldn't have known as nothing was flagged up by my bank despite there being all sorts of transactions in Italy and Greece inlcuding one for over £1000 all in the space of 2 days. Still trying to sort it all out which has been a complete nightmare dealing with their Mumbai call centre because nothing seems to show on their systems for 5 days after they receive it. Think I'll be changing banks after this, not impressed at all.

Flash, you've not used your card in Edinburgh recently have you. There was a report in the BBC website that there has been a lot of people caught with a scam including two senior police officers.

i am never confident when using paypal just dont like it at all.

Nope,I've never been in a massage parlour in Edinburgh

However, I did use it on a site I hadn't been on before to buy printer ink...a couple of days before it was used on Napster :suspect:

TBH paypal have a lot to answer for, they certainly don't run their business with anywhere near the professionalism you'd expect from an FSA regulated entity, to the point that they simply ignore complaints made through the financial ombudsman process.

Are they FSA regulated?

Chris

I don't think they are as the FSA don't recognise them as a financial entity.

Im awaiting my card getting hit after attempting to buy 2 SanDisk 8gb CF's for 12 quid a pop in another thread :)

I have given paypal up as the bad joke it is run for crooks by crooks

I think that I saw that the main investor in the Teslar electric car is the 'owner' of Paypal. That investment was quite considerable and likely to increase dramatically for the next few years - something that he can probally achieve through global domination of a system that like to skim a small amount off of lots and lots of transactions.

The ebay model that charges you to place the auction, charges you fees when you sell, charges fees for you to take the payment and sometimes takes a fee for you actually get the money is great. I wish I had thought of it - and had the balls to actually think that I could sell the services worldwide.

I suspect that both ebay and paypal have really big glass windows so that they can see the people coming.

Chris

I really don't like Paypal or trust them at all.

I use them sparingly, and I make sure that I always remove my CC as soon as I've made a payment.
