Hi,

Could those who have bought or sold items through the Classified forum please advise on preferred payment & postage options, I'm considering selling a few items.

TIA

Used to be Paypal gift but with quicker bank transfers these days its more preferable

Postage is usually Royal Mail special delivery covered for the cost of the item

Thanks for that, do you know if there is usually a charge for bank transfers...prob should've asked that in first post!

Never known a charge in all my days, even when paying ££££s

Worth checking with yours though

I can't think of a single bank that charges for a normal FPS bank transfer.

There's no protection with Paypal Gift so you may as well use bank transfer - or consider Pingit or PayM.

Postage - depends on the item really. And who you're dealing with. Anything over about a fiver and you may wish to use a 'Signed For' or Special Delivery service - unless you know the buyer very well. Larger items requiring a courier, consider Hermes. Their standard service is 48hrs - and that's from when it's picked up from your local agent, something that may not happen until the next day after you drop it off. Always discuss the means of delivery with the buyer in detail as not everyone is able to sign for or receive a courier on every day of the week.

I see you are a junior member and as I don't know your age just a reminder that you have to be over 18 to have a PayPal account. (y)

Thanks for that, I'll ask my wife or 25 year old son to look after any PayPal payments... Only kidding, appreciate you taking the time to post (y)

FWIW, when I've bought stuff through the classifieds, I've sent a cheque in payment. I've been happy to wait for the payment to clear at the far end before the seller sends the items.

I see you have removed the 'Junior Member' tag now! :shifty: :p

I usually ask for cash on collection - which vastly cuts down the potential for problems

if its someone i trust i usually ask for payment by BT and despatch goods by special delivery

Royal mail special delivery is very good value up to 2kg. After that the price just gets silly.

What I sometimes do is split the delivery into two packages if over 2kg. Put the heavy high value item in one package, eg the lens, or camera body, and send that RMSD. The low value bits and bobs (eg hood, soft case, instruction booklet) in another and send that recorded.

In my experience the buyer on TP is always willing to pay cash upfront.

Having had an item I sold on here disappear for several days in the post office vacuum I would always go for some sort of insured and recorded delivery. I was lucky that I had sold to a very good patient member who understood, and having a tracking code was a godsend for me as we could both see that it had been accepted by the PO. Fortunately my item appeared in the end but it was a lesson learned for me !
