No
Do you do this?

If so do you put what you want for the image or just say "No Free Usage"?

Bank details and "no free usage" message.. also contact details.. always suffices.. dont put price in as it wont be the same price for re usage.. you would normaly accept there standard fees anyway... thats how I work ..

Yeah that's what I thought about prices and standard fees.

I'll put 'no free usage ' in the Rights Usage Terms box and my bank details in the Special Instructions.

My contact details, website, email are all in the appropriate places too.

Thanks for that.

Plonk all your details in the Instructions field and 'no free usage, see instructions' at the end of the caption.

The Rights Usage field is IPTC Extended, and a number of newspapers don't bother with that. For example the Express system only brings up caption and copyright automatically.

A guide to filling in IPTC data would be really handy! I just guess what to put in my mine at the minute lol

Like the one I wrote last year?

Just do a search in here for IPTC.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but could putting it in the caption result in (with a lazy editor) the comment of 'no free usage' getting published almost automatically, eg in online galleries? Would it not be better to put it in the copyright section? :s

You'll hardly ever see intact IPTC on newspaper websites. The ones that generally tend to keep it are agencies, usually on IDS or similar, and in those cases they've usually been annotated to show photographer/agency in the caption anyway.

One way round this, if your worried about it, is to comment out the disclaimer with:

***NOT FOR PUBLICATION insert text here***

I was asking this last night as I was sending a few images I took of an event at a bikeshop I work at over to the shop owners to put on the website, facebook etc and also to send on to local press. I was on company time and getting fed and watered (or rather, beered) so don't mind the images being used on the shop FB and site but fancied getting paid if the press used them.

I looked at the images on FB this morning and saw my caption as I had applied it in Photomechanic, now I doubt the shop owners would have had the knowledge or would have bothered to transfer my caption manually so it must have done it automatically. Also, when I put the images into Flickr my caption and tags were applied for me.

Anyway, my point, wouldn't it actually be good to have the 'NO FREE USE' thing displayed on the likes of FB and Flickr as it might discourage some image theft?
