Paying for plastic bags!

FFS!
How the hell do these Darwin award candidates get away with this type of thing ? :(

As I understand it, fresh meat and veg, qualifies for a freebee

Only if that's all that's in the bag.
Pop something else in there and you're 5p lighter :)

Again, as I understand it, its supposed to be kept separate, so if you buy say cakes / eggs / milk you are oblidged to pay 5p
(or supply your own)
but they are also obliged to supply you with a freebie for your Sunday roast or loose potatoes / carrots etc

Indeed. But in these times of packing your own shopping, put anything in with the exempted items and they can charge for the bag.

Here they put things like meat un a smaller clear bag first anyway.

Besides I now have 2 free bags for life,
so assuming I don't die before the bags disintegrate I'm quids in, well 10p anyway :D

If they disintigrate they give you new ones for free...that's the whole point of them lol

TBH, I thought it meant the little bags they use at the deli counter and the ones that are at the loose veg sections that are free. All the carrier bags at the checkout are 5p.

Can't really see it being otherwise as you pack your bags yourself and it would be almost impossible for the checkout assistant to moni9tor what you put in each bag as they will e busy scanning your shopping.

Yeah but if I die before the first ones disintegrate I lose out on more free bags :(

You get a free body bag if you die actually 'in' the shop.

I watch too many crime dramas, I do.

Got an Indian take away for tea tonight, it was double bagged for strength. I got two free bags with my meal, although I would have preferred some free Poppadoms :)

Cool

Thats another 5p saved :D
Look after the pennies as the saying goes :D

you count as fresh meat.
I guess it all depends on how quick someone realised that I've died though ?

And the speed that they cover till in the rush hour, I guess it maybe some time :D

You see. The bags suddenly now have "value". It's beginning to work.
Remember the days of money back on bottles? As kids my brothers and sisters and me all went hunting for bottles, we took these back to the shop and got sweets with the pennies we got back off them. It was bloody hard to find glass bottles after a while, they got rid of money back bottles, now glass and plastic bottles everywhere.

Bring in money back on plastic bags, kids and some adults will collect them, and cash them in. There will soon be no bags littering the streets etc

Where I am, there is a deposit on plastic and glass bottles. And drinks cans. E.g. 25ct. on a small mineral water bottles and cans.

You frequently see (poor) people going round the bins in town collecting discarded bottles with bulging plastic bags. So I guess people don't know or care and bin them. But I'm sure many leave them out for those collectors. If you are out for the day, and don't want to carry an empty plastic bottle with you for hours, that makes sense.
Supermarkets all have deposit machines. Put the bottles and cans in one by one. It scans them and at the end gives you a voucher to redeem at the he checkout. Glass and PET bottles get automatically crated. All other bottles and cans are immediately and noisily crushed, and fall into a bin behind the machine.

There should be here too, get fed up of messy people leaving their cans and bottle here there and everywhere

Over here, were are supplied with bins or bags, that we are supposed to put those sorts of things in, (inc. paper & cardboard) it goes to a transfer station, where its sorted and "re-used"

But yeah the deposit scheme is probably better, someone will collect them up ;)

me and my mates some kids we used to know used to nick the empties from the dayla compound then take them back to the shop to trade in

Why would you want to put a wrapped chicken in a plastic bag?

Pointless.

Same with a packet of sausages. Already wrapped. Why would you want to put them in another plastic bag?

So that you can score points by getting a free bag?

If you have to carry a couple of bags, it would be difficult carrying a pack of sausages. Well not for me, I hate sausages :)

How is it difficult to carry a pack of sausages?

Have shoppers lost the ability to carry something? Have they lost the use of their hands and brains?

Aahhh!! I don't have a plastic bag! I can't carry a pack of sausages!

Edit, I just heard from the wife that apparently there may be germs on the outside of a wrapped chicken.

I'm surprised that's news tbh.

When I was in Malaysia, pork and other meats could only be paid for from a special checkout. The cashier there would put on rubber gloves to handle it. Even if it was a tin of spam!

Now that is weird. I can understand keeping meat separate, but tins of meat (if you can call spam meat) is just silly.

Hmm, point 3.

I can see where a 'bag for life' would not be suitable for transporting live fish. Or a paper bag.

Bring you own aquarium...

Well, I'll be

Still think it's unworkable in a supermarket, queues will be enormous whilst the checkout person checks all the bags the customer packed to work out which bags to charge for!

Probably just be told to do a quick scan, and say a number they think customer will be happy with. Otherwise it will be a pain, sifting through the bags, and trying to workout what is what.

Which makes rather a mockery of the whole thing if you ask me.

At the Asda the other day, the customers at the self scan basket section were backed up. There were no bags, and they had to ask staff for bags, who then scanned the bags for the customers. Pretty glad I took my own bags :)
