I need to pluck up the courage to approach my boss about a pay rise at some point this week...or next week.....I'm nervous and I don't know how to word it as I've never done it before!! And its the credit crunch :(

Any ideas?!
 
I have my annual review tomorrow. I'm just going to ask for mine outright :D. Have some strong evidence to prove why you deserve it, maybe have some objectives that you may have set at the beginning of the year to mark yourself against. I've had a role change so I'm going to mention about being more aligned to the others in the team.

Don't be nervous, be confident, if you feel you deserve it, you have nothing to be nervous about.

I did this a little while ago and it was really difficult to do but I'm glad I did it because the whole team is being reviewed and hopefully will receive a pay rise in April (we aint had one since we started in November 2007, not even cost of living increase).

You need to write down why you think you should get a pay rise, print off job adverts for similar positions that pay more - gather evidence and list any extra responsibilities that you have taken on

Tell the boss how much you love your job but you might have to seriously consider looking elsewhere - don't make it a threat but just something to get the boss thinking "do I want to lose this person"

As above really. You'll need to provide a case to support why you deserve it. May be worth saying that you are looking for promotion though. Ok, it may be more responsibility but it should also mean more money and it shows that you are looking to help you employer. Not just squeeze more money.

I'm in the same boat here. Had a change of role Jan 2008 and i'm still awaiting my alignment. So i've had a full 12 months losing out on about 5 grand in annual salary. You think i'm gonna get that back dated? Err no, neither do i. My boss now tells me that i should be going for promotion, but i'm reluctant incase they pull the same trick again.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but does anyone have any links to places that i can check the regulations about this sort of thing.

That's a good way to approach it. As an employer someone coming in asking for more cash with nothing in return isn't likely to persuade me to give it. If I can see some extra benefit the chequebook's far more likely to be opened.

Its a similar-ish situation to yours MG TF 135 I think. Had a role change in September 2008 (having only been there 2 months) to cover someone's maternity leave - a lot more responsibility, I'm effectively managing people which i wasn't doing before, lots more work and am relied on a lot more. However, the salary didn't rise and it was emphasised how it would be great experience and an opportunity to get to know the company better which i am definitely grateful for, but really the wage i'm on at the moment, is only just enough to scrape by and i feel that from what i'm doing and from looking at similar job ads, i'm possibly being taken advantage of a little bit. i know its temporary in that its only maternity leave but there's still another 5 months to go and i just feel like i'm selling myself short sort of thing...

not meaning to sound big-headed or ungrateful or anything as i know in this current climate i'm lucky to even have a job :( and its a really nice place to work for so i dont know whether i should just let it slide for the moment.....

Try asking for a 'stand-in allowance' i.e. the pay the person on maternity leave gets for doing the job while you are covering for them. You could argue that it is only for a short period and that you should be entitled to it for the additional workload. Add the points raised above so that they can see you're worth it too.

The good thing for the employer is that this suggestion is not open-ended and they arer only paying you the extra while you are doing the job. If you do a really good job, then you can put yourself in line for a promotion when the materity period ends or to take the job if the person doesn't return and then get the pay rise permanantly.
 
all i can say is good luck, but try not to look too disapointed if they say due to current circumstances we cant afford to do anything at the moment;)

if they use that excuse, then ask for a review in 6 months:)

Its never a nice situation to be in. You enjoy working their or should and could you work some place you didn't like as much but get a higher wage. I mean you can only enquire and ask what the situation is "Since I'm doing her job and I have a larger workload does my salary go up?" "I was just wondering so I could get the situation straight?" I mean if their a good company and you have a good boss they should tell you what is going on ans shouldn't cripple you for just asking. Failing that just slip some whisky into the afternoon tea! :naughty: Good luck :thumbs:

This must be something like fate going on because this morning whilst in a meeting with my boss about something, he brought up the issue of my salary!! How bizarre a day after writing this! Am kind of grateful that it meant I didnt have to bring it up!! He said that it should definitely be reviewed due to the fact that i'm doing so much more which is nice that he felt the same.....i'm having a meeting with him early Feb after he's spoken to another colleague.... :D

Hahaha do you know I had a sudden panic about starting this thread - that someone somehow that I work with would find it and grass me up!!

I dont think it will be backdated but hopefully will be a somewhat substantial raise!! hmm will have to wait and see :)
 
Great news HanC!!

I'll cross my fingers that my boss has similar news when i return to the office on Monday morning. I've been on a week long training course for a new solution that we are now providing so have not had a chance to badger him for at least 7 days!!
