Pay per mile tax.

It would be a system where the driver has to log in before they're able to start it, that way if you have multiple drivers in your household that share a car, the speeding points go to the person driving at the time. :)

Much the same way present system works, the notice goes to the registered owner and it's up to them to say who was driving.

A charge like this will kill any hope of economic recovery and have people thinking if there's any point going to work.

I do keep thinking that Parliament and indeed every single arm of government and the wider establishment should be moved out of the cities, especially London, and placed on industrial parks in the north of England. Then make all clock on and off and face a disciplinary if they're late more than twice a month.

At one time I was doing 1500 miles a week. How many jobs will a tax like this kill?

Assuming the 2p per mile, that's £30. Hardly a job killer.

We can hope for the best but even at £30 a week that's £360 a year.

Council tax a few days ago, water today and it all adds up.

Time will tell and sometimes when they take with one hand they give a little back with the other so we'll have to wait and see but even so there are many people on the edge and an additional £360 a year expense isn't insignificant.

It's only an additional £360 a year if you are currently paying zero VED at the moment.

A car will always be cheaper because the cost doesn't change regardless of whether there is just one person in the car or 5. If a family of 5 want to go by train, it is going to cost a lot more.
 
Wouldn't 1,500 miles per week at 2p per mile be £1,560 per year?
 
the average motorist already pays around 6 - 8p per mile in fuel duty and vat as it is i think 2p per mile is a little optimistic
if anything it will at least match what we already pay or cost us more once EV cars become more popular and ICE vehicles become less

what i think is going to happen is there will be a per mile charge introduced and fuel duty will stay forcing people out of ICE cars and into EV's
in other words they will literally price ICE vehicles off the road in favour of EV's

there's already infrastructure in place to make this possible and it's growing by the day with ANPR cameras , smart motorways , average speed cameras etc all capable of recording every registration that passes them

Not everyone can afford new cars or even 2nd hand EVs if they start forcing people off the road they are lose revenue. The idea is to make up for the hole in the revenue, not make it worse or maintain it.

i think by the mid to late 2020's is when the people still driving ICE cars will start to feel the cost
by then there will be plenty more affordable 2nd hand EV's on the road and hopefully most of us will be able to afford one
the thing that's keeping the second hand value of ev's high at the moment is supply n demand but that will change as more and more are on the road

when i first started to look at EV's a couple of years or so ago a renault zoe could be had around 2 years old with less than 10,000 miles on the clock for about £6,000
the fly in the ointment was the battery rental
the nissan leaf was at least twice the price at any age

not looked for some time now but the last i saw was the BMW I3 at around £15,000 + for a 3 - 4 year old example

in a few years time there will be a lot more to choose from and i don't think the price of the vehicle is going to be the issue i think it will be the charging infrastructure especially home charging

There's also the issue of whether people will want to own any of those vehicles. I certainly wouldn't.

i do enjoy driving ICE cars but i'm also looking forward to the 10 quid EV challenge
let me explain...
i put 10 quids worth of charge in the EV and see how far i can get before i have to spend any more money by using the free chargers at supermarkets , plugging the granny charger in at mates n relatives basically getting free leccy where ever i can just to see :)

it's just a challenge i have spinning round my head at the moment
it might never happen but iv'e forewarned every body who matters if they see me walking up there path with a plug in my hand they will now what its about :)

Your completely missing the whole point. EVs don't use a fuel that's taxed for this purpose.

And if you plug in at home, that means everybody's electricity bills go up regardless of whether you are charging your car or don't even have one.

I am not interested in owning an SUV, so an electric one wouldn't interest me, especially as I have no need of anything that size. So it would have to be a car and there is nothing available yet that even remotely appealing in the looks department.

Yes, I multiplied it by 12 instead of 52 but I'm guessing that sort of mileage would be for business so not sure how it would be a job killer as either it will be claimed back from the employer or against tax liability.
 
I have always said that VED should be added to the fuel. That way the amount of tax you pay is proportionate the the amount of driving you do. I can see no reason why the same cannot apply to charging points for electric vehicles, after all they have meters in them, don’t they?” So that would mean that you would only pay VED on the electricity that passes through the charging point.
What about those of us that get free tax?

And no you can also charge a car from a standard plug is obviously slow.

You drive a Ford RS and I drive a VW GTI (highly modified) - We both have petrol in our veins and love driving. Miles of Smiles!

That's what council tax is for and I pay plenty of that.
You seem to think all free tax is based on emissions it's not, mines free because it's a disabled car.
 
VED or something similar will have to be levied on Electric cars. Theres no way the government can afford the loss of tax. There’s a factor with VED that is not felt if all tax is on miles travelled, and thats the annual car owner shock related to the emissions of the car.

The problem if all road expenditure was got from Council Tax is that there would be a huge disconnect between what people use and when they (and others) pay for it.

Plus Council Tax?... That’s the Council’s fault, isn’t it, not mine.

If VED is calculated at the charging point, once your car is connected to the charging point, the charging point will know the what the vehicle is and who the owner is. If, therefore if you are VED exempt the charging point will calculate VED at £0.00.
Like I said, so charge your car via a normal plug and don't pay tax. Doesn't sound like a good way of doing it.

Most of the money comes from central government and is distributed via various channels
There is a very long list of road repairs been published for here in the next few months.
Anyone one know if there are local elections on the horizon?

Most local road repairs are paid out of council tax. It is only the likes of A roads and Motorways that comes out of the Highways budget.
 
Yes, we have a bunch of local councillors appearing, eyes blinking in the bright light, after four and a half years of hibernation.

If only the public took more note of what happens with their local councils...

A lot of people don't realise this and in many ways it has to be so as otherwise tax rates would move with expenditure widely e.g National Insurance both employees and employers contributions won't cover the costs of the NHS and benefits system. Similarly you may not want to lock roads expenditure to VED and excise duty.
Central government anticipates a total income and then allocates expenditure accordingly

As it should be. Otherwise you get a load of people saying that they don't use a service so they shouldn’t pay for it. Which is not the way of a society.

A big issue is noisy pressure groups claiming that they should be treated differently, and not taking account of the true costs of their activities to society, the economy, the environment, our future.
