Hi all

I have a PAYG phone for personal use (my main phone is the company one) but its struck me that should I lose it in whatever manner it there any way to protect the number with the service provider..................yes, I know I can ask them and will but any user insight is always welcome.

As for the phone it is PIN controlled for use though I have not set the SIM PIN as an extra layer but unlike a contract phone where I understand the number is protected i.e. it can be blocked and re-issued to the contractee but I cannot find so far any such info about PAYG phones???

TIA for any replies :)

I'm pretty sure I done that many years ago. As they had my details, they gave me a new sim and cut off old one leaving me with same number. As long as number is registered to you it isn't an issue

Hi Bruce,

Hmmm! but in normal(?) practice the number is not registered to anyone.................though I surmise therein lies the key is to ask the provider how they can help, by registering the number, and then help as needed?

Edit ~ Googling only brings up about registering in respect of 'registering the SIM to activate the line'!

Whenever I've changed my PAYG phone, the old SIM has gone dead as soon as the new one becomes active. The biggest PITA would be potentially losing any stored numbers if you don't have an off phone backup.

What network? Many networks have a registration process for PAYG, all have a lost/stolen procedure.

I have a Three and was going to get another SIM to go with a Xmas present of a sim free phone.

I did search the Three site but could not readily find mention of such a service?

I surmise the phone going dead is because it a network locked phone? Yonks ago with our company phones when they took out a new contract we were allowed to keep the old one....I got it unlocked and used it with a T mobile sim. Since no longer used in part because you had to use the credit up within 3 months.

Since then I got a sim free Moto G (typing on it now :) ) and initially only used it very limited but their PAYG offer the credit does not expire and the rates as far as I know are still good.

The gift will be for SWMBO and her old phone is network locked but hopefully we can transfer the number?

You can, just ring her existing network and ask for them to supply the PAC so you can port your number to the new network, you then give the PAC to Three and they transfer the number to the Three sim on the next working day.

Thanks for describing the process.....all being well good to go as required :)

It's not the phone going dead, just the SIM. If I put the new SIM into the old phone, the old phone still works. I can also use any of the phones with any Orange SIM.

Doh! another Homer Simpson moment on my part :coat:

We all have them!

Will check this out again but oddly your link opens the store page???

That's strange, I copied the link straight from the "Register" page, I've just noticed there is a link at the top right of the Store page to register as well.
