Patio heaters?

Over the last few weeks I’ve been trying to decide which patio heater to buy. From all the different choices I’ve decided to go with an electric one. I have been reading up on Short Wave Infra-red Halogen heaters, apparently they are more efficient at heating the person directly rather than medium or long wave versions that tend to heat the air in between the heater and the person.
The only drawback to these types of heaters is the light they give off, I don’t really fancy sitting outside bathed in a red glow. After searching around I have found a company selling what they claim as Ultra Low Glare lamps.

At a fraction under £400 they are certainly not the cheapest heaters around and I’m wondering if any of you guys are using something similar or can offer any advice before I part with my hard earned.

I know this may not be possible in all situations, eg on decking, but how about a chiminea?

Cheaper than patio heaters, IMO more attractive, and you have a real fire.

Patio heaters are popular in Joburg and other parts of South Africa with cold, very dry, winter nights. Most people use gas, and so do restaurants with outside tables.

The climate is cyclical.
By all means fret over pollution, but no amount of worrying about the climate will stop the inevitable :-)

Sitting near a patio heater makes me feel like a chunk of doner kebab meat on a stuck skewer!
 
Cold is nature's way of telling us to burn more Canon users.

I use a chiminea, good with wood but even better if you shove some coal or charcoal in there as the heat will last a lot longer. I reckon if I were using a gas or electric heater I'd always be conscious of the running costs whereas with the chiminea once the wood, coal or charcoal is in then it's in and there's nothing you can do about it but enjoy the heat!
