Does anyone know where I can buy a spare reel at a reasonable price? I've had a look on eBay, but they all seem to be coming up at £15 for just one reel. Is this normal? Seems a lot for a bit of plastic, but that might be me being hopeful

That is about the right price. I wouldn't go second hand as they can gum up more easily!

I'd try and find a wide flange reel for that price - they are produced by companies like AP and Samigon - I read that AG Photographic sometimes stocks them, but not on their website, maybe worth giving them a ring?

I'll have a look - they do look easier to load. Thanks :)

Well I've just loaded my first roll of film onto my Paterson reel and it was a nightmare. All hot inside the changing bag, so the film was sticky, curled all up and kept getting chewed up in the reel. Waiting for it to dry now, will try to upload some shots tomorrow. Bleurgh.

My winning tip is to lubricate the ballbearing with a little graphine from an HB pencil. And turn the heating down a bit before you load, sweating whilst loading always makes it more difficult.

Oh! Will try that next time. And I'm thinking of ditching the changing bag for sitting under a duvet in the dark. Less sweaty.

I am planning to get one of the pop up tent changing bags- lots more room for air to circulate.

Wouldn't you get more sweaty under a duvet, if its heavy enough to reliably block the lights its going to get hot with your whole body under it.

Well the inside of the changing bag is plasticky, so it gets wet easily.... not to be too gross!

I think you will be fine with a new reel, one with the wide flange.

I had the same problem using a paterson reels. Being new to home developing I had practised with my eyes open, with them closed and with a spare film in the changing bag numerous times. I got to a point where the film went on first time almost every time.

Then about 3 weeks ago a film just wouldn't go on the reel and the more flustered I got the hotter it got in the bag. The film got so sticky that when it I tried to unroll it there were horrible tearing sounds as the emulsion was being torn off the film!

After the above fiasco I changing to the wide flange reels I haven't had any further problems.:)

Wide flange reels. Seriously, the sooner you do it, the better - you'll wonder why you even bothered with anything else. With the leading edge having 45 degree snip offs (so the leading part looks like an arrow head) and a wide flange reel, I can get a roll of film spooled very quickly.

I've got one from Calumet, great for loading dark slides. For loading reels for processing I still cram myself into the cupboard under the stairs, it's fine once the flashbacks subside.

Harry Potter? Is that you!?

I need to get some extra spools and a larger tank. Loading wet spools with 120 film... never again.

Argh, got my AP reel in the post today, it doesn't fit on the spindle of the Paterson 3 tank! Oh well, will keep my eyes out for another tank on the cheap. Luckily I don't get through that much b/w film :P

Whoops, I don't think the ones that I suggested would have fitted either. I assumed that your tank held 3 reels (and was system 4) not that it was a third generation paterson tank.

Oh well, you have an excuse now to buy another tank. :)

Never mind. It still looks much sturdier than the other one I have, so I don't mind getting another tank so much.

A series 4 super is a good investment, much less leaky in my opinion!

Which was why I suggested the ones in thread 7, the seller states he has used them in Paterson and AP tanks.

Ok for system 4 tanks but seemingly not a fit for 3rd generation tanks as mothdust has discovered.

Right! never knew that.
How old are system 3 tanks then ?
Have been procesing film for years, never seen one except on Ebay, system 4 tanks seem fairly cheap on there and as Menthel mentions are fairly leakproof.

Apologies, my recommendation was because I thought it was a Multi-Reel 3 tank (part of the Paterson Super System 4 line of products).

No worries - I think after 50 years or so, this tank can be retired :P
