Is it possible to put passwords on an external hard drive to protect files on it?

I woudl've thought something akin to bitlocker would do this

Truecrypt will encrypt an external drive, oh and it's free.

Don't touch bitlocker, it's as secure as a wet paper bag.

What makes you say this, have you had a bad experience

truecrypt is the way to go, not only can you do entire partitions on external drives and usb memory sticks, you can also encrypt the entire boot disk of PC or laptop , and leave a message when asking for boot password. Mine says "this laptop is stolen"

128bit AES encryption. just look at the site. Just done forget your password:nono: there is no way to recover.

The entire code tree is open source so you can be sure there are no "back doors" in it.

I wouldn't encrypt the drive. If you want to encrypt some filkes, create a virtual drive and encrypt that.

The problem with encrypted drives is when they go bad, they go spectacularly bad with no means of recovering any data that's on them.

This is very true, but as long as the drive is being used for backup purpurse then it would be ok. Also depending on the nature of the data to be protected it may be the only option.

Personally I agree with Andy, create a folder on the external drive, encrypt that with truecrypt then mount it when required.

Paul.
