From 10 September 2018 you can no longer have any time left on your passport transferred when you are renewing.
They used to let you carry 9 months over but now it is Zero!
So from now on if you have less than 6 months left on your passport and you go somewhere that requires you to have 6 months or more you will have to renew early and lose the days that you have already paid for.
This has nothing to do with the fact that if we leave the EU many European countries may insist on you having 6 months left on your passport!:)

I read somehwere this morning that it's to do with aviation rules, and the UK was the only country in the EU that allowed unused months to be carried over.

I wonder how true that is. I must have been one of thet last to renew the old way & havent struggled anywhere with a passport expiring dec 2028

I've heard quite a few saying that it'd be worth renewing before Brexit actually happens next March too ...

I never understood this ‘6 months’ thing. If it’s a 10 year document, it’s good for 10 years surely?

Most countries insist on 6 months remaining, so your passport will still be good (within the UK)!
