Not sure if this belongs in this section or not  but I'm sure someone will move it if it doesn't ;)

Has anyone taken their own photos for use in their passport? Are you allowed to do this?
The only reason I ask is that I forked out £3.50 to have my photos done in one of those horrid booths they have at Tesco, and to say the images are appalling would be the understatement of the century. They don't even look in focus, and I look about 60 years old :'(

I've had a go at taking my own and I'm much happier with my version, but just wondered if I can actually use them?

My friend took his daughters photo himself for her passport, and they passed it no problems.

They used to refuse all such photos, but they now allow them, as long as the photo itself passes the requirements (Size, colours, glasses, no farting, no smiling, no thinking, no ears, one eye, two noses and a partridge in a pear tree). :D

You could ask does it matter...after all you will have a hologram plastered over your mugshot anyway.

Besides which they are super strict on the background size of borders size of shot, no gummy smiles or gurning, quaffy hair doos etc is it really worth the hassle to find it gets declined cos it dont EXACTLY meet the criteria.

There is an upshot if you look 60 years old in the photo you have now, in that you dont have to worry about updating the photo until you reach 60 so you can keep using the same one;).....

Ok, I've decided to bite the bullet and post <gulp> the photos. Don't laugh, I hate having my photo taken at the best of times. Tell me which you think I should use - I know which one I prefer :D (and yes, they both are of me - no PS involved )

BTW - the top one is from the photo booth, the bottom one is my attempt.

I took my own passport photo three or four years ago and even did a little PP on it (no that doesn't sound right!) and printed it on my cheap secondhand Epson printer too. They accepted it no problem but you have to get the size exactly right.

Funnily enough I couldn't use one of the same photos for my land deeds here in Turkey because if you wet your finger and rub it the ink comes off.

I have to have some more passport size shots done again and this time I will be doing them myself, as you have said the quality from the photobooths is now apalling, i'm sure they were better quality years ago.
BTW there was a how it's made on photobooths a while back and in the one they showed being made it was just a standard HP injet printing them.
So long as the background and size are right I don't see a problem with it.

Last year I took my husbands pic for his shotgun license and they were accepted. Just remember the size must be exactly right and you should have no problem.

BTW Both of your pics look OK to me.

By the looks of these guidelines I think either of your photos would be accepted - I think I can guess which one was the Tesco one though, I don't remember your skin being blue

Below is a copy of the guidelines that the Passport Office use to check your photos meet the regulations.

Its usually printed on a transparent sheet so that it can be placed over the photo to check sizes etc. I've just scanned this and re-sized it to upload it here, but if anyone wants an actual size copy to check their passports, just PM me your email and I'll send it over.:)

You didn't realise my dad was Papa Smurf then? I've edited my post, just to make sure people don't think the first pic is my attempt :suspect:

Thanks Ianwilliams & Grendel - My photo fits perfectly :D

the 1st one (from your smurf era) should be rejected as one of your eyes is partly covered, if I understand the rules correctly

Min, if you go to the PO they got a sheet that gives you all tye details and requirements, I took/printed mine on Tuesday and they passed they PO check, so I will assume they will pass at the passport office.

PS - Loving your first pic, it looks very much like a certain lady but I won't say as I don't want to offend :D

I just traded my old green paper driving licence in for a pink photo one, took the pic myself and did some processing to clean up the background etc.

I took my own shots for Passport and Driving Licence and didn't have any problems.

Took my own passport photo this year..
Actually I didnt the wife did. It just happened to be a reasonable shot of me on holiday, that met the non smiling, miserable git rules (well it did when I'd nuked out the background).
Had no problems with it.

You should see the pic on my old passport  It looks even more like Myra Hindley

I did my own passport and driving licence photo a couple of years ago, no problems at all. As long as it meets their requirements you'll be fine.
