ive just had my passport application sent back to me on the grounds of my photographs not meeting #14 of the application rules

"without sunglasses/tinted glasses so that the eyes are clearly visible without reflections or frames from glasses covering the eyes"

now my glasses frames in the picture do not obscure my eyes, what they do obscure is my eyelids, but hey ho thats just not acceptable........


BUT lets think about this a bit closer, i wear glasses on medical and safety grounds, medical because i would not be able to see without them, and safety because it would be unsafe for me to venture anywhere without them, they are in the picture EXACTLY how i wear them in real life..... now lets think of it another way.... i wear them on safety grounds and they happen to hide part of my face (albeit a highly undistinguisable part of my face). if was to wear a burka this would be on religious grounds that i wear it and it would hide my ears, the overall shape of my face, and also my hairline..... but this is acceptable.

so now religion is more important than medical grounds


my other beef is that i need my passport in 5 weeks time, so i used and paid for the check and send service, only for some (obviously not well trained) woman to tell me everything was acceptable, my pictures met the requirements and all would be well


according to the very rude letter i recieved im also not to phone them "do not phone us unless it is absolutely neccesary. repeated phone calls and correspondence affect our ability to process applications...." oh im dreadfully sorry, surely thats whay your being paid to do. i think ill actually phone them anyway just to really really **** them off. (id presume phoning to find out how long my application would take to process due to their photographic discrimination(!) would be completely unneccesary.......

"taken with a neutral expression (that is without smiling frowing and with the mouth closed)" - should i just dress myself up as a suicide bomber and give you a full length bodyshot of me infront of some crazy islamic fundementalist billboards so i look as sinister as possible. oh no we're english we cant possibly look happy or heaven forbid smile once in a while!

Dont know if anyone heard about it, but a week or so ago on GMTV they did a piece on 7 year old girl I think it was that had been given a passport gone to airport with family for holiday and been refused at passport control as the photo had her smiling and showing her teeth, they were not allowed to fly, so all the family lost the holiday, and they had another younger child who was smiling in her photo but hers was ok as she was under the cut off age of six. I think thats it but I have slept since. something like that anyway, they lost a holiday for about £3000

Take your own passport pic. I've supplied loads of pasport pics for people printed on inkjet printers and good quality photo paper.
 
Did my mothers passport foto's a while back. Glasses off so you could see her eyes, mind you she's as blind as a bat without them on! Photo taken against a neutral grey background so you could see her hair line, as she's not far off 90 and it's all white. Got rejected cos of the background!!! So I takes her down to the Snappy-Crappy in town for the photos. Passport comes back and I tell you, your a better man than me if you can even see her hair :suspect:

Last year we had to get a passport for our (then) one year old...getting a one year old to stay still long enough for a passport photograph to be taken, let alone it then be the correct framing, no smiling, eyes open, close enough, no parents showing, no toys showing etc etc etc, was a nightmare. :bang: Took over an hour to get a shot I was assured would pass...but it didn't. Had to run around everywhere looking for somewhere else to take it, and so another hour trying to get the shot (thankfully a lot of pleading got this one through).

Have the same probs with myself and wearing glasses, so I end up just taking them off :shake:
 
A women i work with had only a month or so before they went on holiday and then realised the kids passports needing doing. All three photographs that were taken were sent back! Again for smiling, being too close or too far away. She had even paid at somewhere like Jessops who guarentee that their passport pictures will pass. After having them taken again two made it through but still one wasn't acceptable! She finally managed to get them sorted but had to go all the way to London and que for ages to make sure it was ok and so she could get the passports in time :annoyed:

Sounds like a right royal PITA mate.

At one time they didn't accept a make your own passport photo didn't they?
My friend did his daughters last year. A 1 yr old who wouldn't sit still....and printed it himself. And that was accepted no problem.

The biggest factor at play in all this is not the umpteen rules that now apply but the numptie in the passport office who makes the decision as to whether to accept your photo or to **** you about some more. If your application is processed by the guy with the team brain cell then you could be lucky. Otherwise :(

No longer are we a nation of shopkeepers. We're a nation of bureaucrats and the downtrodden.

It will all be different when I'm pressie.
