passport photo help...

Do they come out too large? small? Describe your workflow and we might be able to take a guess at where you're going wrong...

Ok, what size is the image - tell me the pixel size and the DPI/PPI value - you can get this information from CS3 by going to Image > Resize.

As the passport office are so pernickity it might be easier to use one of those machines or get someone who does passport photos to do it for you as they usually have the specific software which gives them all the right dimensions
The problem is that my daughter is disabled, and it took me and my wife about hour and a very lot photos last night, to just get her to look at the camera... not much hope for anybody else...
image size is width 2984 x 2672 dpi 96, should i crop photo then print, or crop on printer software?

Last time i did it i just set up a new doc in photoshop 45 mm high x 35 mm wide at 300ppi and pasted the photo into there. I then resized to suit. If you look online there's some guides to size and how big the face should be etc on there. Just check the size, i think thats right.

I was printing them on an A5 sheet of photo paper so i set up a new A5 doc at 300 ppi and just pasted the photo onto this as many times as it would fit. I then printed from photoshop making sure it was printed at actual size and no re-sizing was talking place.

EDIT: part way down this page it a link to a PDF with info on Passport photos.

Is the passport size picture for a passport?

If yes and if I remember rightly the passport office does not accepted inkjet prints.
Might be worth checking this out before spending too much time and energy.

I've done some before mate, for others, no problem.... Its just cant remember how i done it...

STOP!

Right now.

Unless you print them on 'proper' photo paper - NOT Photo inkjet paper - they will be rejected - the reason being that the laminating process causes inkjet ink to 'bleed' over a relatively short time - much less time than the lifespan of a passport. You would be left with an artistic blur, not a recognisable likeness...

The passport office scans images submitted to ensure they will not bleed, hence the rejections.

You MUST use 'proper' silver-based photo paper that uses chemistry to activate the colour dyes.

We spent ages trying to convince the passport office that we could send in inkjet prints - and to this day I still get officers coming in asking for me to do their Passport photos only to be told to go to Tesco instead.

Believe me, if we could, I would...

And that's just one reason for the rejections, never mind all the smiles, bad crops etc etc

Ive done my own a few times before. Did have a problem once, the Mrs fringe was slightly covering her face and they rejected it. Always worth getting them checked at the PO first, especially if your in a rush for the new Passport.

Oh, I know that problem! When my daughter was alive the best pictures I got of her were if I stood on a table above her so I was looking down at her rather than trying to get her to look in my direction - either that or use a slow moving torch to entice her face round.

i went to costco...they have a passport camera and guarantee the size and in particular the zones where eyes and chin should be
its a nuisance as i could have done them myself...but costco or similar are pretty cheap for a 10 year product:)
