hi
i have been taking matchday photos for my local super league team this season and have gradually got speaking with some photojournalists, one of them tells me that i should get a super league media pass from the rugby league to enable me to carry on next season and hopefully supply the rugby papers with some photos, can anyone please tell me if they have this pass and who do i talk to to get myself one of these please :help:

Hi Steve i have an RFL pass issued through the Agency i work for.

My understanding is that the RFL will not be issuing any freelance Accreditation until the end of next year, when the current batch of passes expire.

If you were to start shooting for an agency you would stand more chance of getting the accreditation.

Hopefully KIPAX will pop in shortly and offer some advice as i believe he has a freelance pass.

Cheers

Andy

I have a freelance pass but as far as I know I got it just in time before they shut up shop.. and lucky it last three yrs... I really dont know any more than you Andy ... Sorry :(

As you have been shooting for the club could they not ask for a pass to be issued for you on their behalf?

Andy is right, the current crop of passes were issued for 3 years and dont expire Dec 2011, no more will be issued until then.

Word is that the next batch will be much harder to get as you will need to be able to prove you have somewhere (media outlet, papers etc) to sell your images to which is supposed to stop togs turning up on spec with no pre match sales lined up.

Also been told that Matchday commissioners have to clamp down and ask togs for evidence of their Public liability insurance which is currently £2,000,000, Matchday commissioners have also to ensure that clubs clamp down on "unofficial" togs shooting from either the touchline or from the stands, failure to comply can result in the confiscation of equipment and ejection from the ground.

Heres a link to the terms and conditions issued by the RFL in 2009, this is not an exhaustive list of requirements as there have been several ammendments to the terms since 2009, the terms for 2012 will probably be very much tighter and accreditation numbers will be more restricted than they currently are.

Thats one of the things theyre going to clamp down on as far as i know, it wont affect a togs status in being employed to shoot as an official club photographer at home, he/she will still have to abide by the general RFL terms and conditions but he/she wont be issued with a "media pass" to gain unrestricted access at away matches to cover his/her team unless already employed/working for an agency or newspaper.
