I was hoping to have had my 70-200 2.8 by now but got lazy listing on e-bay, sooooooooo my choices are nifty fifty and the 40D kit lens the 17-85. I will have my 580ex11 aswell.

There is a band on and alot of people, it will be darkish with very high ceilings, I am a guest but have been asked to bring my camera - truth is I ain't got a clue what I am doing really settings wise.

Can anyone give me some quick pointers, TV, AV starting refs ?

50mm sounds good to me.

Shoot wide open, or nearly wide open.

Get ISO up so you have shutter speeds of at least 1/100, preferably higher. You will have to see what works.

Top man, will give it my best shot, I know most folks so no huge pressure on me, taking 10GB worth of cards and will shoot in RAW so with any luck it should be fun :)

I shot a friend's band last year in a dark pub, using 50mm and available light. Link here if you want a peep.
Most of my shots were around F2-f2.8 max, and ISO1000 or ISO1600. All in Av mode IIRC.
I tried to keep the shutter speed around 1/200 but not go any slower.

The 40D has auto ISO you might want to try making use of it to help maintain shutter speed for given aperture. I think that's a greta feature to have (not on my 30D though).

The 17-85 will be fine with the 580EXII but too slow without the flash.
Edit: try it in manual mode say ISO400, f5.6-f/8, 1/250, and ETTL will meter for the subject.

Have fun!

Well, I now have a hangover sent by the Devil, Photos are downloading, all 6 GB of 'em and they are actually looking good so far - took the plunge went Manual, thank you for the advice everyone will post some up later on when the 'Lakeland Lager' has worn off, yup party was in a Brewery :(
