Yes
hello.

when i bought my 40d years ago (2nd hand) it came with this lens - EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - I've never really liked the lens, but never really had the option to upgrade at the time or since. When i bought my 5dii (also 2nd hand) I didnt buy a lens and therefore this is the lens i use the most (i have a 50mm & 85mm f2.8 which i use for gigs, but in terms of general use this non prime lens gets the most use) - I don't really like the lens, i've never liked the feel of it, and something about the feel of the photos i get I'm not always happy with. Any time i've been on holiday in the past few years (where photoraphy is a thing) I've rented a 24-70mm or a 24-105mm, so would really love to be able to buy a 24-70mm 2nd hand. the reviews of this lens (the one i want to sell) seem to think its 'ok' and it still seems to be a decent enough price from new, but if i paid the new price, i think i'd be really disappointed in what i got - or maybe im just fussy.

Do you think it matters much that if i were to sell my 40d (unlikley as its my back up and i dont plan on upgrading from the 5dii in the future unless i become rich, i'd rather buy lenses), if i had sold this lens, it wouldnt be in its original 'format' as the original box mentions the lens etc? And is this lens even worth selling/part exchanging? If i bought a new lens i doubt i'd use this again and even if i got a small amount for it, surely it would be better than nothing?

just wondered on peoples thoughts, guess im just looking for an excuse to buy the 24-70mm, because even though its not a lot to rent it, it will add up over time (towads the price of 2nd hand)....

Well, carpe diem. Life is too short. Get the lens you want..there are some interest free deals from time to time. Have a look at Clifton Cameras and no, I don't work there!

Thanks chipper - I'm not the lens is worth a lot in part exchange - not like I can give it a glowing recommendation..

Dan
Keep your eye on ebay a few Canon 24-70 F2.8 L lens on there now ,I got mine a yr ago from ebay mint etc

Do you really use your 40d since you have the 5dii? I think having a back up might not be worth having the camera depreciating unless you make a living from it. Freeing the value in that camera to contribute to the lens might be more worthwhile

If you px it you'll get somewhere around a £100, if you sell it yourself you might get £135-150, depending on condition of course. It's not a lot but it takes a reasonable bite off the cost of a 24-105.

Yes, when i shoot gigs (which admittedly isnt that often at the moment) and a couple of other things I do, I need a back up so i wouldnt want to ditch it. for gigs I have one prime on one camera, and a different prime on the 40d, i might not need that so much if i bought this lens, but I would still take it as the 85mm prime would reach further on the 40d and i do feel its better glass than the zoom.

hmmm. yes, not that much difference in price, but its enough. i think the lens is in decent condition, but ill have to inspect it in a bit more detail. I have a poloraiser for it too.

I'd sell your 28-135IS lens if your not getting on with it and then look to either the 24-105IS or the 24-70 lens. The 24-105 is a great lens and as a general walk about lens, esp on the 5D. I've not used the 24-70, but for me, it's not a great walk about lens due to the limited focal range and I don't need F2.8 for a walk about lens.

I'd sell the 28-135 and decide which lens you want and get that one, don't settle for something you don't really want, otherwise you'll potentially be here again, looking to upgrade that lens...

Thanks Andy. I have used the 24-105IS, but I'd need the faster lens to be able to get the most use out of it and justify the cost. I know with the IS you can push the 24-10IS a bit, but I know when I used it, I missed having the fast end of the lens, more than preferring having a bit more reach. It mean I didn't have to carry an additional prime if I just wanted to take one lens.

I am considering a 70-200m f4 lens too, I used it briefly on holiday and it was nice.

Does anyone else dislike the lens I want to sell as much as I do, its not a scientific dislike and as I say, reviews seem ok, it just seems crappy to me.

MPB have offered £120 for the lens, assuming the condition is as stated. I may do this for ease, and then just bide my time and keep an eye out on this forum for 2nd hand sales of the 24-70mm as prices may be better than ebay/trading sites as cheapest at mpb is £700 atm

Thats not a bad price at all - you would get slightly more selling it privately, but depends on whether you want that hassle / the time it would take to sell...

Anther option is to advertise it on here for this price and let someone on here have a good price lens and you get what you are happy with (presumably their offer is okay for you) - win win situation.

Yes, I seem to remember a couple being advertised a £100 or so less than this - you could also put a wanted ad up - you never know, you might get lucky...

I used the 28-135 for several years with my 500D - it was the first lens I bought other than the kit lens and I really had no idea about lenses at the time. I got some good shots out of it, but it was hit and miss, and it was only when I got the 50mm f/1.8 II that I realised what I had been missing in terms of image quality. I'm a bit of a hoarder and hardly ever sell anything - dropped the 28-135 recently and autofocus no longer works... oh well. no big loss.

the mpb thing seems hassle free, i think thats the attraction. they send a courier etc, and i dont have to worry about sorting that myself.not sure i'd send royal mail if i did it myself, Hermes maybe, but i've never sent high value items with them, only little things. ill have a think, im not too bothered on time, i can juggle things on credit cards if i happened to find the lens of my dreams available.

is that slightly different to the 24-70mm then, seems much cheaper?

yep 4mm diff a lot cheaper ...
One has just gone up on ebay starting at £51 at the moment

Hmm, ill have to see if that might be a better buy, how they compare on quality etc, aside from the 4mm!

The 28-70 is quite a good lens, but not as good as the 24-70 and unlike the 24-70 mk 1 it is no longer supported with spares etc, so if it goes wrong you may have a big job getting it fixed. But at that price you'd be better off just buying another one anyway!

But for under £250 a 28-70 f/2.8L would be well worth having.

that's why I gone down this route myself ..

hmm sounds like the 24mm-70mm is the better choice, if I don't want to have to rebuy anything in the future.

mpb quite keen to get the sale done, but said I don't want to do anything just yet! havnt decided yet to go with them for ease, or see if there is a demand for it on classifieds here
