Hi Guys,

Off to Paris for 2 days in October for my birthday.

Have any of you been, and what do you guys recommend that I do?

Are the bike tours or vespa tours any good? Also, I have seen some photo tours, are these worth the 185 euros or am I better just visiting the sights myself?

Also, any recommendations for hotels or restaurants?

Thanks!

we went a month ago for the first time

spent a lot of our time queueing , the louvre is well worth a visit though

 You're going to love it.

I dont think you should do the photo tour to be honest, there is so much to photograph and since you are only there for two days I dont think you will run out of things.

We bought one of the two journey tickets for the boats and just got off at every stop.

Didnt bother queuing for the tower and didnt really regret it!

Paris is a photographers paradise. Louvre and surrounding area is fantastic. The river criuse is fantastic. Eiffel Tower has fantastic views from the top, I went just before sunset and the crowds were at a minimum. Notre Dame, and the area around Montmartre is a must. You'll love it. Rob

Vic, what do you mean about the boats?

There are boats that travel up and down the Seine River and stop off at most of the attractions, Notre Damme, Louvre and the tower. It was something like 10 euros for all a return I think  though dont quote me.

I thought it was a fantastic way to get round the sights.

The Metro is pretty good for travelling around as well.

The area south of Rue du four at the Mabilon station end (Rue des Canettes, Rue Mabilon) is packed with little restaurants and cafes. Had some super meals in some of them while staying at Hotel des canettes.

The Musee D'Orsay is worth visiting if you like art, but there's so much to see there that it might take too much of the limited amount of time you have.

Restaurant wise, We went in October 2006 and enjoyed an evening River Dinner cruise, well worth it in my opinion.

Looking at the sights all lit up from the river, while eating great food with good wine was  in my opinion.

3 of my priorities when I first went were

up the Eiffel Tower
Musee D'orsay
Pere Lachaise Cemetery (to visit Jim Morrison's grave)

have since been again a few times and visted the Louvre, boat down the Seine etc... and I always have a great time in Paris but I must say the first 3 things I did were the highlights for me.

Going on Friday for a long weekend. Wife's got some sort of itinerary worked out for us but mainly walking, with a boat trip thrown in at some point.

Pompidou centre is well worth a visit if you prefer modern art. Make sure you get the travel card for the metro, its about 14 euros for the day and you can use the buses as well.
