I'm going to Paris & London, only have room for one lens. Which would you take. Camera Nikon D80

1. 18-200mm
2. 24-70mm

I'm leaning towards the 18-200mm for the range, but will miss the quality of the 24-70mm.

Hmm that's a tricky one. I went to Paris recently and I only took my 18-55 lens, I never felt the need for any extra reach. However I'd say that 24mm isn't really wide enough, so I'd have to say the 18-200.

24 on a crop (assume the D80 is a crop?) might be a bit restrictive on the streets....

Neither? A decent 18-50ish f2.8 would be my choice.

A 16-85 Vr? The extra 2mm at the wide end would probably help a lot more than the extra reach at the tele end. It is a better quality lens than the 18-200 as well - I have never regretted swapping especially as the 18-200 is weakest at the telephoto end.

im guessing he was after our opinion on the two lens' he has as opposed to the hundreds of lens' he doesnt? id go for the 24-70 :)

Ok, so you need wide, 24mm is not wide enough on a DX body.

18-200 is a bit blurgh but wide enough to be better than the 24-70 and probably lighter too.

Take the 18-200 and while you are there see if you can trade it at LCE for a 18-50ish 2.8 :D

We will be moving around quite a lot and therefore are attempting to travel as light as possible.

We are only taking one camera bag, which must hold not only my gear but also that of my wife.

You are correct Peter-T. I don't plan to go out and buy another lens.

Although your IQ won't be as good, bear in mind that the 18-200 includes the range of the 24-70 anyway!

You'll want to go wide to get the Parisian Streets and the Eiffel Tower so 18 will be preferable over 24mm, whilst the 200mm option will be good to pick out Sacre Couer from the top of the Eiffel Tower ;)

Also, whilst in Paris, visit Tour Montparnasse as it will give you great views over Paris and set you up nicely for a classic shot including the Eiffel Tower and surrounding areas.

Bon voyage!

Understood. Working light can be a good thing anyways as it reduces the number of choices you have and you have to work with what you have got. I often go out with just one lens, a prime or a mid range zoom, its good fun to challenge yourself to get the shots you want.

It has to be the 18-200, take some form of support as well, even if only a bean bag.
