Hi guys

I teach at a local art college and will be taking my students to Paris next week, I am hoping to get some good evening photographs of the Eiffel tower etc..

Can anyone offer any tips of photographing or locations in paris please.

cheers
John

That huge road that runs up to the Arc Du Triumph (I think it's there, and yeah I probably spelt it wrong) would be cool, you could get some awesome long exposures there as it's always stupidly busy with cars.

Oh and remember that you can't use (i.e. sell or distribute) photos of the Eiffel Tower at night commercially without permission (doubt you were gonna do that anyway but it's usefull info anyway).

Some really good suggestions there guys, I'm hoping to get some long exposures of the Eiffel tower (and the images are for my own use )

I am however a little nervous about walking around Paris with my camera and tripod, any tips regarding this issue?

Cheers
John

any tips regarding this issue?

Have a monopod too. Or some other form of large blunt instrument. ;)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You will be in busy parts of what is actually, despite its rep, a very friendly city and you won't be the only snapper stood there shooting these world famous landmarks. :)

Dont attempt to stand in the middle of the Champs-Élysées to get that perfect photograph.

(The Champs-Élysées is also host to the only McDonalds in the world with a white 'M'!)

Hi John - one view I missed on my first trip to Paris but was knocked out by on my second is from the Trocadero - look on google earth it is the "U-shaped" building opposite the ET across the Seine. You are in an elevated position with fountains all the way down to the river and the ET right in front of you. When I saw this view for the first time I thought it was stunning. Must not be missed in my book.

Have a good trip - and show us the results!

Do NOT leave Paris without taking pics of La Défense. It's stunning!

Sacre Coeur, the basilica is amazing, as is the Seine close to Notre Dame. The Moulin Rouge is on the tourist trail and is worth a few snaps. The Montparnasse Tower also. L'Arche du Triomphe is amazing. Take some close ups of the frescos on the sides of the building. Stunning.

Also, be aware that you may be stopped by gendarmes if using a tripod as you have to have permission from the Mairie de Paris. Technically.

Others are right too. About the Eiffel Tower. It's forbidden to use the night time shots only for commercial purposes. You shouldn't even publish them on a site such as this. Not without permission from the people who control the lighting, SNTE, which is copyrighted as a work of art. It's nothing whatsoever to do with the Eiffel Tower.

It's an old article, but http://blog.fastcompany.com/archives/2005/02/02/eiffel_tower_repossessed.html explains more.

I've been Paris a few times, and noticed a few signs on say the top of the arc de triumphe about not using tripods.

I think you can just get away with a monopod but I would certainly be brief using it. The lights on the Eiffel tower are interesting. They run the sparkles for a few minutes every hour I believe.

I went there in '06 with just a Nikon Coolpix and could have done with a tripod. Most of my shots were blurry.

This was probably the best shot:

Didn't get a chance to make many pics when I went there at Xmas with my newly aquired 400d.

Oh and there are many pics to be taken in Paris so make sure you have enough memory.
