Paps - do they give photography a bad name?

Absolutely agree. Especially with times as they are, you do what you have to do to get the money in, and papping is a good earner. If you dont like it, dont do it, simple. I dont do it personally but know a few that do.

If you are a celeb and court the publicity, you also know that if you do something you should'nt you will probably get papped doing it. Thats the way it is! :naughty:

So true, they have to do what they have to do to earn a living. Whilst what paps do does have a negative impact on the view of many photographers.. Its the same in any trade really and its something we should all just learn to cope with.
 
lol, i did an english GCSE exam yesterday and one of the choices of question i did was about whether you like/dislike celebrities...i wrote about five pages of what was basically ranting and including some photography stuff too!

i hate celebs!
 
I have no problems at all with the Paps, they are doing their job and the job the celebs and their publicist want.

As has been said it's all a game, just depend how you want to play.

You have the idiot celebs who try to cover their face or run away, and then get upset when the paps either get a bad photo of them or chase them down the road.

Then you have the ones like Clint Eastwood, who when leaving a restaurant or what ever, just stand there for a few moments asking the paps where they want him to stand. A few moments of his time and everyone is happy, paps have the photo and he's no hassle.

Tom Cruise also has the perfect solution. Get to the film premier and stand outside chatting to the crowd and letting every tom dick and harry take photos for a few hours, pap shots are then worthless as everyone has a shot anyway and the photo value is on exclusivity.
 
If you're worrying about whether a few paid-up sports toggers taking pics of the England team are ruining the reputation of photography, you've got too much time on your hands.

People on TP bang on about photographers rights and the freedom to take pics of what we want, but when it comes to paps, they should be controlled....

...which way do you want it?

There aren't any. In fact, having spoken to a couple of guys out there who were at the training session, they were all waiting for Fabio Capello to appear and snap him...not whatever room was behind him.

Sorry SuperAP...but that's what we're paid to do...what we're told! It wasn't the hotel, it was an open, accredited training session. If the FA objected, then they can close the training session or ask the togs to move. It was not the hotel.

I think, James, you've taken this the wrong way. My point was that the image certain areas of the media project at times is not a good one and this rubs off on the public's view of photography in general. In short, Photography is generally reported in a negative light more frequently than positively. I'm not bothered about the facts of this particular incident... are they reported? Are we told if who the togs are working for, Sports togs or not? No, because it isn't a good story! It wasn't a dig at Sports togs out there to do a job and record the story of the World Cup and have the temerity to get paid for it - I'd love to be doing it :)

I'm well aware of how the game works. I used to work for a company who managed the interests and PR of a very well known footballer and his wife ;)

I doubt Joe Public actually takes notice of the vast majority of pap/press-related togging stories. It's only photographers who pick up on every little news snippet. The Fabio incident is probably the most high-profile incident and even that will be forgotten by kick-off today....
