paper roll wall mounts

I've used the Manfrotto wall mounts similar to the ones you have linked, although good in saving space, I find my 3m rolls have tended to sag in the middle thus making them slightly uneven when rolled out... If I had the space I'd have a system with a crossbar.

The Manfrotto (original?) version of these are far superior in build quality - but they should be at the price. The metal mounting bracket isn't really the issue as this is a just a chunk of welded painted steel (though the quality of painting is lower) but the plastic used for the expan units is quite poor. I had a Manfrotto set which provided years of trouble free use, but sold it when I could no longer use my last studio. I currently use a cheap eBay version, which cost £50 and it is quite shoddy in comparison to the Manfrotto offering, but at the price it's fine. I didn't go for the Interfit version as the mounting holes differ from the 'originals' which allow mounting on a Superclamp, which is how I use them on my autopoles. The other reason I chose the cheapest I could find was I wanted to try some of the Bessel vinyl background rolls - but the core is too small for the Expan units, so I'm experimenting with reducing the diameter of the holder to see if I can get them to fit - didn't want to do that with the more costly real ones.

hmm, cant find the manfrotto ones but these ones do seem like a good deal. Im only worried that the wall wont be strong enough although I could just use rawl plugs and decent screws.

Just google "Manfrotto 046" for the holders - but the cost of one set of core holders (without the wall brackets) will be more than the whole Interfit 3 core set!

ahh, thanks Paul, ive gone for the interfit one as I would want to have white, grey and maybe a cappochino paper. Might possibly get a seperate one which will take a vinyl roll as that will be a lot heavier.

Paul did you manage to to find a holder for the bessel vinyl rolls as I am looking into buying some.

No, in the end I just turned down the 'bobbins' on the holders so they would fit inside the Bessel cores - first picture shows the original size holders, second one after I've turned it down.

I've since re-cored the vinyl on a Manfrotto alloy core. But to be honest I won't be buy any more vinyl, I'm going back to paper.

I purchased a set from a TP user and one of the bobbins had been ground down to fit a smaller tube... Seems to work ok...

I'm looking for some light weight aluminium tubes for some of the cloth backgrounds that I have...Its proving quite difficult to get anything over 2.9-3.0 m in length that has a narrow wall diameter to keep the weight down. I dont want to cut the backgrounds down as width is really important with family shots.

Hi does anyone know if the inter it or the eBay one will hold vinyl, I have 2 rolls of white and black vinyl lastolite super white and 1 paper roll all 2.72 wide with 2" core

The weight worry me, but I guess its the wall brackets that take the load,

Any advice before I purchase would be grateful,
Cheers kenny

I'd have no worries about the wall mounts - they are just welded steel plate - the main issue is how they are attachmed too & the suitability of the wall. I've never seen the Interfit offering, but I'd have no qualms about mounting three 2.72 rolls of vinyl on a 'pukka' Manfrotto set-up but I certainly wouldn't on my 'Chinese' copy! On the Expan units, the plastic is of low quality, the friction clamp just adequate and the whole thing feel rather poor in use - but then the whole triple set-up cost less than just the Manfrotto wall clamps - you do get what you pay for and it is OK with just a 2 meter wide roll of vinyl (just).

Check out LuxS Studio Decor...they supply alloy poles, fixing bracket, brake and chain. Ive just bough a sustem from them and the service was great, Jon knew the pros and cons of each system and was happy to explain them!

They are also a supplier of Colourama easyroll which is £1000+ worth of background support! A little overkill unless your using the 3.5m x 30m paper or multiple vinyls!

It would be appreciated if you mention Matt from Autumn Leaf recommended them!

;)

All the various problems in this thread that I mentioned to Matt!

Mannfrotto Expans are officially called B/P expans - Background paper - and are designed for use with only light backgrounds.
Vinyls on metal cores vastly increase the weight load on an expan system whilst reducing the friction between the expan and the metal core when compared with the friction between the expan and the cardboard core of a paper roll, so little wonder that users encounter problems - although some have overcome them with a subtle screw or two in the right place

'dipping' on an expan system can be avoided by regularly turning the roll and not leaving it in the same position.

To get over both problems, an alternative is the Standard Chain System which will handle both substantial vinyls and paper with ease, and is a fixed solid metal drive, with metal chains supplied.

Cheers but your link doesn't work, could you repost it, I'd be grateful
