I have been trying out a few panoramic shots with mixed results. Could anyone recommend a good and easy to use, ideally free (although don't mind a small fee if much better than alternatives).

I have tried Hugin which I find quite un-user friendly.

Most of the work I have done is longer exposure seascapes, it seems to be the horizon that tends to be slightly out of lign. I have been taking using a 23mm lens (crop) in portrait orientation and trying to stitch between 4 and 8 shots.

Not done any lately but PTGUI is an industry standard (amongst others).

Lots of tuts in the interweb.

Has a win & Mac version.

Not free.

What @john-oh said. PTGui is the daddy.

It's not free (and it's not that cheap) but it is very good. Personally I find it very easy to use though it does have a rather dated interface.

Jonathan is right - it's not cheap. Prices are here. There's 21% vat on the first lot of prices, scroll down to 'Taxes' section to see inc-vat price.

The big advantage of the Pro version seems to be 'Viewpoint correction' (parallax) - the ordinary version doesn't have this. http://www.ptgui.com/features.html

Also, pro allows batch stitching and some HDR/fusion capabilities that can give more pleasing results if your exposures vary across the pano. Worth trying both versions IMO and seeing which bits you need - although you can upgrade to the pro version later for pretty much the difference in price.

Thanks for the info Jonathan.

Do you know if it helps to solve the problem of the U shape that normally results when trying to stitch a series of landscape shots taken from the same spot without using a panoramic head?

I don't know - that sounds like a failure to rotate around the nodal point. I guess s/w could fix that but the maths would get pretty serious. My guess would be that if any s/w can, that PTGui can.

There's a free trial ;)

Yes, I think it's caused by a failure to rotate around the nodal point.

The Pro version is probably the one that will solve it (if either of them can) but the trial download page says this:

The Panorama Tools stitcher and optimizer are not supported (only the built-in PTGui stitcher and optimizer)

What's the betting the 'Panorama Tools stitcher and optimizer' is the vital bit. If it is, I won't find out if the Pro version can solve the U shape by testing the trial version.
