The thing I found out with the 50mm you need to keep any eye on the f stop. Don't just put it on 1.8 to get the shutter speed. Keep your distance to around 5-6 ft and hit around 4-5 fstop. (for face shots) anything else I would start to move back to get the focus range. I would play around with the ISO setting as well as this will help with the shutter speeds.
If you have flash gun even better as this will help capture the action.
just my take on it as I found the 50mm can be a little tricky to nail the pin sharp shots. but then I'm still learning.
Are you expecting to much? Ok they might not be up to pro or magazine standard
But compare them to a standard person with a point and shoot.
And take it from there.
You don't have to take pro shots all the time.
You are not there to take pro shots you were there to enjoy yourself and your family and friends and to catalog the occasion..
You would never get pro shots in a situation like that.. if so some one would not be enjoying them self and that's the main thing.
Now I know you had a rubbish night and sorry to hear. But don't beat your self up about the photos worst case you will have learnt some thing from it so look where you went wrong and next time you will get it right
Once again sorry you had a bad night.
Best bit of advice.... use this as a excurse to do it again.....
Sorry to hear you had a bad night ....(just hope this was based on the taking photos)
Taking these kind of shots are hard based on you want to be evolved n the evening and try and capture the moment at the same time...any chance we could see any of the shots? as you might find you could be being a little hard on yourself...
I agree with the others, we can only really help if you post some of you work...believe me everyone on this forum has started as novices at some point and I'm sure they would agree posting your work can only improve your shooting.
