Panic Buying

This is a real shame, and I do sympathise with particularly small businesses of any types anything that involves people :(

Thanks for the thought, Chris. LOTS of her regulars have made a point of renewing their prepaid packs to help tide her through the duration (and there's no time limit to when the packs can be used [and never has been!]) and the business has done well enough to give her a bit of a buffer. She's also going to team up with at least one of the other teachers that teaches at the studio to do conference web-chat based classes - just needs to get the clarification from governing bodies and insurers before committing to it. Might help her that one of the directors of the company that she leases her premises from is a customer/victim and also a good friend.

@Marc - at least you can get the muck off those rims now!

@ All - stay safe.

Sums up my feelings about the whole situation; not so long ago we sent young men (my father) with their whole life in front of them to face odds of death much higher, yet we can't even show restraint at the shops:

We've been using jjfoods for a good few years, a wholesaler open to the public if you don't mind bulk buying. Order online, pick a half hour slot then just pull up to the loading bay and wait for your trolley.

I drove past a wholesale warehouse this morning,
Same as I do once a month, on "That" route Today was slightly different though, they were queuing for a few hundred yards in either direction to get in the place.
Some turning left, some turning right and neither side giving quarter.

And successfully screwing up the road in the process!

Sensible stuff, the supermarkets are going to reduce the choice (one has 60 types of sausages) this should make it easier for the factories if and when they start suffering staff shortages, i had a few years in food processing and it could take longer to clean down between products than the product run.

Great idea (y)

Currently finding small shops easier to find produce in - the local Co-Op has everything

I do think one of the main problems is as always the newspapers, picture after picture of empty food shelves.

I've not tried the Coop lately, TBH, even though its right next door (20 yards away) from my local Tesco express.
Maybe I'll swing by next time I'm down that way.

Went to MAKRO a week or so ago, just when the bog roll rush started (needed some refills for a hand towel dispenser at the studio) and there were several people without cards trying to buy trolleyfuls of bog roll, only to be turned away at the tills and sent to register at reception. Where you need to show proof of business to qualify.

Went a very slightly different route to pick Mrs Nod up from work after her lunchtime class so I would pass a Turkish (IIRC) supermarket. No gaps on the racks of fresh fruit and veg outside the doors, although some of the f&v is a bit different to some British tastes! Looked to be loads of "normal" stuff too (spuds, onions, peppers etc..)

2 of the group that I play g*lf with (luckily, I haven't played with either over the past fortnight!) are self isolating so I've offered to try to pick up any necessities - one has family local so said thanks but sorted but the other will let me know.

Shame the clinical trials seem to all be in Lungdung - if I could help, I would (for free) but a day up there sees me hawking my lungs up at the best of times (hence my nickname for it.)

My mother - 87 years old and having grown up in the war - knows a thing or 2 about stocking up. Her fridge and freezer both require sellotape to hold the door shut.

In her defense, she bought a vast pack of toilet rolls about 4 weeks ago and won't need more for another 6 months.

But great for cutting into 6 inch squares when the poo paper runs out! ;)

I had a walk around Town today. The town centre was very, very quiet. The one upside was the Waitrose in town had mostly full shelves. Grabbed a couple of bags of pasta and rice, something I’ve not seen in the supermarkets for days.

My local corner store is being pretty smart about some items. The girl behind the counter was telling me they’ve loads of bog and kitchen roll ‘out back‘ but only put two packs of each out at a time, topping up as they sell. Quite a good idea I thought.

Joke of the day

ASDA is opening its larger stores to vulnerable customers only until 9am

Hell of a lot of vulnerable people in Grimsby, things are no different this morning, panic buying, one guy trying to get away with 12 bread loaves as it was for his grans freezer

Our small local sainsburys is opening it’s doors to elderly people only between 7-8. Trouble is they don’t get their delivery until about 7.30. By the time it actually goes out in the shelves about an hour later the general public are allowed in and the locusts immediately pick it clean. Pointless.

Not a joke but for real the other evening. Tins all gone in a local Sainsburys to me, except for a pallet full to the brim of four pack baked beans. Couldn't understand why so I looked closer, they were sugar free. Even in a global crisis the Scots don't want to risk their world renowned diet and buy the slightly healthier tin! Stood there embarrassed. Wish I took photo though.

Maybe they'd just been put out...

People in South Cheshire don't seem to like mulligatawny or beef soup... they were the only two flavours left on the supermarket shelf yesterday, but only about four or five tins of each. Fortunately, I quite enjoy a bowl of mulligatawny, so two of them joined the single can of chicken soup I had left in my cupboard!

My wife’s friend has just had a consultation with her practice nurse and was told that after the weekend all over 70s will be told to stay at home. How this is going to work isn’t clear. If this is correct then supermarkets won’t be having the so-called ‘silver hour’.

Ohhh it's desperate times here now, they've bought the sugar free beans. But these would be taking things too far....

Waitrose are advertising theirs as "for the old, vulnerable or carers" so we could get Dad's shopping for him. If the over 70's are going to be "compelled" to stay in doors then either the websites will need to have slots available or fit and healthy youngsters will have to get the shopping in for them.

Well.I think it will be the younger people in the family or volunteers who will do it. Plenty of older folks live alone. I can only assume that the medical people have been told that this is what's coming and there must be an announcement by Matt Hancock soon. Maybe late tomorrow or on Sunday but this will, surely, only apply to where there are people about. I'd imagine taking a walk in the countryside will be ok, infact it's recommended by doctors who have been on the media answering questions They can't expect people to stay indoors (bar the back garden) for 4 months..forgot to say..it's for 4 months. All will be revealed very soon no doubt.

not to bad here up in rural Yorkshire, our local co-op emptied a few days ago literally everything got sold, a few days later stuff filling up again, i'm more worried about pubs closing.

Does the C0-0P still do a divi these days ? I suspect when things start really winding up people won't want to go to the local. Have to say that it seems rather surreal at the moment. I don' know anyone or have even been told of anyone local with the virus. I assume there must be some people around here with it. Just checked 15 in the county (Gloucestershire)

Re you Avatar. They called me Meldrew when I was at work. Doom and gloom, what can happen, will happen is my motto...lol .This morning I did a litter pick .We have a 15m wide grass verge opposite-no houses so that's nice and after bin day there's litter all over in addition to what the unthinking drop.

Just had an email from Ocado to allow me to edit my order for tomorrow BUT I can remove items, not add anything. Not too worried though as I'd pretty much completed my order before the site was taken down. Would add a couple of things if I could but nothing urgent. Feel sorry for those with weekend deliveries who were only half complete.

I do feel that the media should be stopped from reporting on this - can't help feel they are fuelling the fire; any one else agree?
You would like to believe the reports and images would stir the consciences of people who are panic buying, but I am afraid it doesn't seem to be working. So I am with you on this one.

I think we should have a one day a week NHS only shopping day where you don't get served unless producing valid NHS Picture ID, its disgraceful that these frontline workers cannot even get basic goods, because their shift patterns mean they have to shop at certain times, and when they get their the shelves have been ransacked by idiots.

Same as the rest of the stores these days, with a "Loyalty card"
Although Tesco send you vouchers, the "amount" on the coop loyalty card can be taken off the bill at any time.

My local coop was less well stocked than Tesco and they are right next to each other.
I nipped in for a few bits, not been there for a couple of days, and it was dire (tesco.)
Normally there is bread, white brown full grain ..
Not today !
Normally there is milk all sorts... Nothing today..
The end of the world is nigh it would seem ...

I was stood back to back with a woman and her I guess pre-teen daughter, them looking at one thing me looking at another.
Oh squealed Mum.. look 2 boxes of tea bags! Quick grab both of those before someone else does.
Still back to back I said in a stage whisper .. Yeah no point in sharing is there...
( I don't like tea, so I couldn't care less, but there could be some older folks that needed tea.)
Obviously There was no response as she hurried off to the checkout

Final funny .. Hazard tape in front of the check out. 2 meters exactly ..
Seems I have to put my bag in the basket and the checkout girl will pack it.
When I step forward, to pay with the card, she has to step back ...
I'm going in there with cash next time :D
