My new Panasonic TZ10 arrived yesterday. I've bought it because I wanted a lightweight camera when out treking and walking around town. So far I'm really pleased with it. I've read the manual and worked out how to use the advanced modes on it. I don't find the intelligent mode to be too good. Low IQ I suspect:lol:

Aperture mode and manual mode are very good however. I haven't taken any pics using shutter mode yet.

The zoom on it is fantastic 25mm to 300mm. I've noticed things I've never seen before.

I did consider the GF1 but after a lot of consideration decided it would be nice to go for the super zoom as I can get lots of candid shots with it. I've got a D80 and a good collection of nice lens so couldn't see the point of duplicating with the 4/3 camera.

The TZ has GPS positioning but I don't think I will use this very often as it drains the battery. I will just switch it on if I really need to know where I took the photo.

Macro photos turned out well on it though not up to the standard of my Sigma 105, but very good for a compact.

I'm waiting now to get a chance to use the video on it.

In the end i went for the TZ7 as I needed the longer battery life / i was more impressed with the sound over the video for gigs (where i'll be taking it mainly).

I decided to have more of a compact for fun then serious pictures as I have my d90 and a wide selection of lenses / filters for my more serious photography.

Enjoy your Tz10 and keep us updated on it :)

I'm also interested in the TZ7 / TZ10 as my compact which i mostly take to gigs.

What is the image quality like? does it perform well in low light, e.g gig environments? I've heard some reviews that the image quality isnt up to much.

Is the video (Mainly Sound) of good quality? i've onwned a couple of Canon high end compacts, and the sound quality is quite bad, buzzing so much you can't hear the music at all.

I haven't had chance to try it in low light situations such as gigs yet, but I am planning to use it at my grandsons gigs, so I will keep you posted.

I have a TZ7 (one before the TZ10) and love it. Got it mainly as a weekend break camera and also for concerts and the footie where DSLR's are not allowed in. The zoom length is fantastic. I've used it for a couple of concerts and have had mixed results but I think it is probably just a case of practice and some of the lesser quality images may have been down to being at the long end.

Here are a few shots, nothing brilliant but just to give you an idea. I've tried to look at what settings I used but doesn't look at though this is available now they're on a hard drive. Know I used the scene modes rather than Intelligent Auto. I usually set two up so I can easily switch and one is set to landscape and the other night time landscape. I think I did try portrait but with zooming right in I think the results were worse.

1) Bon Jovi - indoors at the O2 (300mm no crop)

2) Pink - outdoors, very early summer evening (300mm, heavy crop)

3) Pink - outdoors, late summer evening, not quite dark (300mm, part crop)

Battery length is fine for concerts but it's pushing it to get the full day if you're on a city break.... but then I do faff around! I'm looking to get a spare so I don't have to have one eye on the power left. For daytime travel pics though, the results are great.

I'm very happy with it overall.

Some good shots there!

You taken Video at all with it at gigs?

How does the sound come out?

Thanks.... though wish I'd been able to take a DSLR in!!! I was much much closer for the Pink concert, about 15m.... that makes the real difference. Bon Jovi and we were probably 50m away.

No I haven't taken any HD footage at a concert yet. Think I know I'd find better footage (stiller) on You Tube. Plus I'd want to record the whole song and then I'm missing the whole experience. Tried it at an animal show at SeaWorld though and the image is crystal (albeit haven't seen this replicated to tv yet and it's not HD anyway) and the sound quality was fantastic but with all the amps and the audience at a concert, that would be its true test I guess.

Tested out low light by taking a picture of the sunset. Camera was hand held but rested it on the wall.

I was quite pleased with the quality. It was taken from Caernarvon looking out over the Menai straits to Anglesey.

I use my TZ7 when I can't lug my Canon EOS7D or 500D plus lenses. Excellent camera with great definition as shown by examples elsewhere in this thread. However, continue to be frustrated by the usual shutter delay normwl on all of these small compacts, although the TZ7 (and presumably TZ10, is better than most.

That was one of the camera's I looked at to take with me hiking in the Lakes, as I found carrying a DSLR for the previous years an extra kg or 2 more than I wanted in the rucksac, especially climbing Pillar... But in the end I choice the Sony HX V5, similar spec to the Panasonic, but slightly less manual control, however the panoramic feature is very impressive.

I just bought my wife a TZ7 after she complained the 400D i gave her was too heavy. Hopefully it will arrive this week and I'll get to test it for her!! :D

There's a review of the TZ10 in Amateur Photographer due out next Tuesday. It's one of the compacts I'm thinking of getting.

auto intelligent on low, from what i read it produced the best iq from the cam

I've taken a video of Broadstairs folk week procession in motion jpg, but can't work out how to edit it. I can delete part of it in supplied software but when I try to edit it in any other software movie editor there is no sound. Any suggestions?

Problem solved. It's working OK now.

Wish I hadn't seen this thread - I sold my TZ10 when I decided I had too many cameras and that I needed to rationalise down to two

I do miss the TZ10, it is the best 'carry with you at all times' camera I have come across and is topped off by the excellent video mode :(

Thanks Dave. I love the TZ10 when struggling up mountains, but today I got tempted and bought a GF1 as a medium option when on easy walks. So now iit's D80 indoors and when I'm trying to look professional, GF1 for easy walks, and TZ10 for mountains.

if the Ai is anything like the Ai on my lowly FS15 it can get some great shots:

Panasonic PnS with a Leica based lens are just awsome

I've got my GF1 and tried it out. It has got a bigger sensor and RAW files, but I must admit I still do think that my TZ10 doesn't do too bad in comparison.
