Panasonic Street Cameras vs DSLR bodies - are the insides the same?

All good food for thought, and it's nice to see compacts getting some praise because they deserve to be part of this discussion, they clearly have a lot of tech inside, far more than I realised when we started this topic. I know that photo quality is important on many occasions, however, it's clear that it's also about choosing something that will suit the end user and get the job done, even if that means sacrificing a bit of quality, and lets face it, a lot of photos are only bad if you compare them to others or start to look for the imperfections.

Take this video for example, I know Blackpool very well, and if I had been making this video and produced this end result I would have been extremely happy. Just a pocket sized compact with a small sensor, but I daresay exactly what he needed to make the video, and still enjoy a full day out at the seaside without a shoulder bag of kit.

Agreed.

Did I see BJ's twin at 6:38? :)

Although I don't use it much I wouldn't be without the TZ100 as when I do want it... there it is :D

I would say those images certainly illustrate the quality of the tech in compact cameras, and show why they are popular.
I note that the lens on the TZ100 has a greater range than the pana 12-60mm, so certainly a pocket sized option for general walkies when you want nothing more than a step up from the ability of your phone.

Just out of interest, how much editing was done to those images?

Not much processing because I can't be bothered and I don't know how to do anything really clever anyway :D

I shoot raw and apply a preset to the batch which is basically just basic sharpening and noise reduction and I then process each picture for best effect such as setting the WB, straightening, recovering highlights, adjusting the exposure, cropping etc. I normally spend from just seconds to maybe a minute or so on each. That last hill shot was a bit different though as there were people on the paths in about three places so I cloned them out and that took longer but I'd guess about 5 minutes or maybe less.

You tempted by a compact?

Yes, a little tempted by a compact as a constant pocket companion. I was thinking of upgrading to the G9 over my G80, but for what I use the G80 for I can't see the point, as I would not have enough benefit for the added expense.

FZ82 - general walks when I may want to zoom in on birds and bunnies etc and also snap a scene or two.
G80 - When I go somewhere specific to take better photos of churches/structures or an event.
Compact - something to drop in the coat pocket when I don't want anything else, just in case I see something that's worth a picture and want more composition and ability than the smartphone.

I have heard that you get more of a delay on the shutters on compacts but I guess that's not really a real-world issue?.

Perhaps you could enlighten me, how by looking at photos posted on here, would I be able to tell if it was taken on a TZ1 or a TZ100? Or a G9 or Canon 7D?

One thing that concerns me with the compacts is the tiny size of the EVF. I wear glasses and think this could be a problem.

So do I, and the adjustment is fine for me, but you have to decide whether to adjust it with glasses (so that you can see the LCD as well) or without glasses

I always adjust with glasses on, but I have heard that it can be uncomfortable for glasses on tiny EVFs and the light can be tricky, not to mention getting a clear view through the EVF

I have TZ1, TZ10, TZ 60 and TZ70 still, and don't have problem (+3.5 for reading).
I don't have any of the others any more, but I also have Canon G10 and G12, also have no problem.

I do however some times adjust for no glasses, especially when travelling overseas.

I wear glasses most of the time and the TZ100 is ok. The EVF is smaller than on the larger cameras but if you have glasses on your eye will be further back so you actually get less of the tunnel effect and the EVF looks bigger. It's nowhere near as good as the G100's EVF but it's perfectly useable.
