Well I was looking at the Canon SX200 IS and the Panasonic TZ7 but I've been put off both really with the Canon feeling cheap and not liking it in my hands at all and the TZ7 having some screen problems.

Now i've also thought well maybe something thats a bit more focused for photography than an all in one do it all camera might be better, so I've come to the conclusion of the LX3. I like the low light capabilities and the super wide angle lens.

Its got good reviews across from most places, however forum wise cant find a great deal.

Anyone got any experience of this camera?

There's quite a lot here on its identical twin, the Leica D-Lux-4. Everyone loves it.

One of the most 'photographer orientated' compacts around, but it's not as shirt-pocketable as the similar Pano FX550 (I've got the slighly older FX500).

The other one people go for is the Canon G11, but that is really quite big.

The LX3 is often compared with the Canon S90 too. I've handled one, and I'm interested, but it's far too expensive for me right now.

The G11 is excellent but too big/heavy for a pocket camera. I have the same problem with my A640 - brilliant camera - but it needs a belt case.

Here's some of mine with the LX-3

I loved mine when i had it and it travelled everywhere

Some great shots Chilli!

I bought a G11 as a back-up to my D90 kit. Nearly all of that is now sold as I actually use the G11. Wonderful camera, feels right, looks right, takes great shots and is substantially cheaper than the excellent Olympus and Panasonic micro jobs. In the main though it has got me taking pictures again - it goes nearly everywhere with me.

Thanks :)

I sold the DSLR's and went over to a GF1 for size reasons.

It goes everywhere with me, and takes superb pictures.

I usually have the LX3 with me when I'm out with the 5DII.
I went and found the smallest pouch the LX3 would fit in that had belt loops.
When I'm out walking the LX3 tends to get a lot of use as it is so accessible.

There's a stack of mountain piccies taken in very wet weather over in this Snowdon thread. On this occasion the LX3 spent a lot of the day in my map pocket to save opening all my layers.

I've got an LX3 as well. It's a super little camera and very easy to use on manual, Tv and Av modes. Quite intuitive once you figure out that the little joystick does everything for you. The fast lens is indeed fantastic and lets you take pics in less light with a lower ISO, and the ISO is the crucial element for picture quality in these small sensor compacts.

I have the little Leica and it's agreat little bit of kit. I'd say it's a great addition to any kit but I would not want to replace my dslr kit with it. Some of that is down to the type of photography I like though, (people rather than places) For a travel camera though, it's hard to beat (GF1 and Olympus Pen would be superb for that) it handles tricky lighting situations ver well, I've tried it on all sorts of things like backlit subjects that normally confuse the heck out of compacts. It lives in my handbag and it's great for prints up to 8x10 but for A4 and above I'll stick to the DSLR.

For those who may be interested....
I looked up my pouch and I'm pretty sure I've got a Samsonite Trekking Premium DF9. It's a perfect tight fit and is literally a thick layer of padding wrapped around the LX3. It's so tight the front pocket cannot be used for anything otherwise the lid won't shut, but it's nice and compact....
I've got a 2Gb card I've never filled and I've never come close to exhausting the battery. I carry spares for both but they are buried in a waterproof bag deep in my rucksack just in case - so I've never felt the need to put anything in the pocket.

I see they also do a Samsonite Trekking Premium DF10 which looks like it might have a little extra space, but I prefer the smaller case...

Treated myself to an LX3 and arrived yesterday. Going to upload pics onto the computer in a bit to see what they come out like, just took a few outside the house. Seems a nice little camera though, and nicely laid out.

I got an LX-3 a couple of months back as I wanted something to replace my Fuji F31. Now, for a compact, that was exceptional in low light, and I don't know if the LX-3 is as good, as it starts getting a bit noisy at ISO400. However, it's not bad, and with a fast, stabilised lens, it is pretty capable. Took this yesterday, handheld, ISO400, F2 at 1/5, and I'd have stuggled to do that with my D700 (although I could just have upped the ISO, but that's another matter).

That said, at ISO80, it's very good, and the 24mm lens, the key reason I got it, is extremely useful. I'd definitely recommend the LX-3.
