I've done my research and decided this is to be my alternative for those times when I don't want to lug around my DSLR.
it has all the manual controls and shoots RAW.
Can anybody give me a real life reason for not getting this?

I had one but sold it after 3 months. The IQ was excellent, iso 400 was v. good but ultimately it was the tiny fiddly easily knocked controls that caused me to sell it.

I now use a Gf-1 with a 20mm lens as a big pocket camera. Unlike all the true pocket cameras you can get a defocused background.

Originally I was going to settle on the TZ10 due to budget restraints but I've been offered a LX3 for £225. With that in mind an LX5 is a no go straight away.

fantastic lil compact. great macro lens, super sharp, and love the different ratios you can shoot in including 1:1 square format. sadly im having to sell mine to help pay for 5dmk 11 :(

I love mine - pics good, lowlight good (for a compact), video good, manual control don't use all the time but very useful at times, looks cool. I find the controls fine for me, I quite like them now I'm use to them.

The only drawback for me is the short zoom - that aside it's fantastic. If you can get past the zoom as the BigYin says I think you'll love it.

the f2 lens is good for compact in terms of low light. Still using one when I don't want to lug my dslr along when going out for dinners etc.

Before buying a P&S i narrowed it down to the Lumix LX3 and the Canon s90 and after much research i plumbed for the s90 and i am very very happy with it. Not having the LX3 i can't compare but i get blown away by how sharp some of the images are from it.

My similar quest has come up with a few good reasons.

1) the S90 looks to rival it for image quality
2) the S90 is LOTS smaller
3) the S90 has the zoom range that the LX3 should have (and the LX2 did)
4) the S90 has the adjustment ring on the lens, which is nice
5) the Samsung EX1 also looks interesing but is bigger

I'n having a really hard time not putting the S90 at the top of the tree for quality compacts and I am the biggest LX2 fanboy that you'll probably ever find.

When I got my LX3 (2nd hand off here) it was a lot cheaper than the S90 - the S90 did\does look good as well though.

I've owned a LX2 for nearly three years & love it, albeit the mrs has claimed it these days. When the day comes it won't work anymore then i will replace with a LX3 or what ever LX is about at that time.

The controls are awfully fiddly, but other than that it's an absolute splendid camera to use.

Tried the S90 but bought the LX3, the S90 was a bit too small and fiddly for me, the LX3 on the other hand felt good. Have since found the zoom limiting, but if you can live with that, go for it.

Damn it. Whilst I've been fannying around asking opinions and doing research someone has beat me to the punch on the LX3. Most annoying...oh well, TZ10 it is then...

As someone mentioned, a good reason not to get one now is because the LX5 will be out on 21 July, and it looks to have some nice improvements over the 3 but without departing from the winning formula.
