Hi folks,

I have recently upgraded from my trusty Canon 1100D to the spectacular Panasonic Lumix GH4, and man is this one hell of an upgrade!

First impressions... overwhelming. This is a camera with a LOT of features. The interface is intimidating at first but after using it for a while I've realised that it is more intuitive and user-friendly than the Canon/ MagicLantern combination I was using before. At the moment I have the Olympus 25mm f/1.8 lens (actual focal length is 50mm) which is perfect for me as I am used to working with the Canon 50mm f1.8.

One thing that has become clear to me is that this is a video camera! But that suits me just fine because I will be using it to make short promotional movies (I work in the fundraising department of a charity), and I also hope to get into some indie filmmaking in the near future.

I am just wanting to open up the floor here so people can discuss there experiences and advise on how to get the most out of this camera. I took some photos of the night sky last night (f/2.8, 25s, 1600 ISO), and the results were pretty damn good considering I live in London. I imagine I would get fantastic shots out in the countryside on a clear night.

Like I said, I am looking into making some short movies in the future, using this camera along with a couple of others. I am guessing before I do that I will need to get hold of some kind of rig and at least one other lens. If anyone can advise on the rig that would be great- I'm not sure whether a simple DIY shoulder-rig would be good enough or whether I would need to invest in a proper steadicam.

Thanks for reading!

You may find these resources handy 1 & 2. The second link especially has a lot of GH4 information so be sure to look through the blog. Happy shooting!

And you probably wouldn't want to know that EF to M4/3 Speedboosters now support autofocus on Panasonic bodies with a firmware upgrade just released.

Blimey, that's cool. Off to check options...!

Yeah I'm really liking the look of the Sigma 18-35 + speedbooster. Just need to wait for funds to recover.

This alone is seriously tempting me to jump ship from Olympus - not a big video shooter here, but an adapted Canon EF 50/1.2 becomes an autofocusing 37/0.9 - lovely portrait lens!

Argh...you know the awful moment when you wish you hadn't clicked on a thread.....

So...if I get a Speedbooster......GH4 with the Sigma 18-35......what is the effective focal length of the 18-35? Is it about 18-35?

I just did a search through this forum to find posts discussing the GH4 and I found very little...

Why is there so little love for this camera on these forums? It's pretty much the best mirrorless camera in its price range, and produces video quality on a par with the RED Epic.

The GH3 is half the price is the main reason I guess.

The best mirrorless? I think a lot would disagree and that shows on the forum, as you've discovered.

There aren't any other mirrorless cameras for that price that produce the same video quality. Photo maybe.

No I get that, I'm happy talking about stills. I was just making a point of the GH4's incredible video capabilities.

I use my cameras for about 50/50 video/stills.
