Afternoon all,
I have a chance to purchase a Panasonic GX1 for a reasonable price don't want to be spending £££ of pounds.So my question is for people who have owned this Camera;

What lens would you recommend for a walkabout lens, and why,and what are the positive, and negatives for that lens?
Opinions on the GX1 itself

Thanks

Great little camera the GX1, when I broke mine I imediately bought another. If you can do without a viewfinder, then fine, but the evf is good. Lens, depends what you shoot, but I have the panny 14mm pancake almost permanent on mine with the Siggy 30mm art in my bag. With the 14mm on it fits in a jacket pocket. There are some pic's on my Flickr with the camera and lenses.

By the way, the earlier GX1s suffer from delamination of the touchscreen, so make sure it's ok! (But they do come cheaper!)

Thanks for the reply!
May I ask,how you broke your first one?
What do you shoot with the 17mm?

Thanks

I smacked it against a stone stile while out hiking.
Landscape mostly, but cars, locos, buildings, people, anything really.

How can you tell if GX1 is an early one,or late one if you're not able to check the touchscreen in person?

If you cannot see it in person, ask the specific question about it and ask for a photo of the screen.
There's one for sale in the classifides on here.

Can't access the Classifieds at the moment.....I'm a newbie!

No worries!
I take it the 17mm is an Olympus?
I was thinking about a Panasonic 20mm,or 14-42 or 14-45mm,would be taking pictures similar to yourself?

GX1 and Panny 20mm - lovely combination - still can't bear to sell mine,( or my GF1!).

The 20mm f1.7 is a good lens and there are only two issues... it's a tad slow to focus but this may not be an issue for you, the Olympus 17mm f1.8 is quicker but it might cost more, and bizarrely the 20mm can cause noise banding at high ISO's under artificial light but if your GX1 only goes to ISO 3200 this may not be high enough to see the issue. I never saw the banding with my GF1 or G1 and only saw it when using the 20mm on my GX7 which goes to higher ISO's.

If you like a wider view the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 is compact and good and used ones often crop up at reasonable prices.

Ah yes, you're right... 12,800.

You may not use the higher ISO settings and even if you do you might not see the noise banding... I saw it but when I tried to test for it I couldn't reproduce it. It seemed to happen the most under artificial lights and I think that it's possible that light from the TV too made it more likely so maybe it's very light dependent.

If you Google the issue you might learn more and be able to decide if you think it's anything to worry about or not. I haven't seen this with any other lens.

Any issues with either the Panasonic 14-42 or 14-45mm?

If you're talking about the original 14-42 and 14-45mm... I have the 14-42mm and have no problems to report :D

I think that the 14-45mm is considered to be the better lens and to be better built too but they tend to cost more so if you see a 14-42mm at a good price it might be a good buy.

What would you consider to be a good price for a 14-42mm?

Also, just been reading about delaminating issues on the GX1 screen!

No its the Panasonic g lens.
And it should read 14mm not 17!n

+1 for the GX1 i had one and do regret selling it, and combined with the 14mm f2.5 it was a great pairing.

What, camera or lens?

Couldn't see the link before, WiFi is patchy at best here.
Few cheaper ones on Evil bay though.

The new 14-42mm OIS lens crops up in the classifieds on this site from time to time as people get cameras and kit lenses and put the lens up for sale. This new lens is tiny, there have been a few recently and in fact I advertised mine and never even got a nibble... (it's no longer for sale) so I'm pretty sure bargains can be found.

A word of caution though as I've suffered shutter shock with the 14-42mm OIS on my GX7 but the GX1 may not be affected by this issue.

Any feedback from you guys about what a very good condition GX1 is worth,as I'm not really sure what they are worth?

What does it come with? Is it boxed, spare batts, manual, leads etc?

70 quid seems a good starting price up to 110 for a very good one with low shutter count. I paid 75 for mine with extras but no lens.

This one has no lens, shutter count is 3500 pwrcount 2500,would you consider this low?

Yep, I would.

No. I was taking a trip down memory lane this morning via Lightroom and was very happy with my GX1 photos - 90% taken with the 20mm at about 1/125 (mostly inside family shots with no flash).
