Do you have Lightroom? Are you able to show or describe what differences there are? One mans vast may be anothers tiny....

Yep I have LR 4, you can download DxO for free 30 day trial, so can see for yourself ;)

Actually, looking in the cold light of day, the lens distortion corrections are pretty similar, although not identical. The way the data is interpreted is, however, quite different (DxO is far more aggressive with the contrast, colour and sharpness).
 
I've just updated LR to 4.2 RC and the G5 imported images look sweet, but I still find the OM-D images look way better going through DxO first
 
I've reset the processing (I'd had a wine or two last night ;)) and bumping up LR's sharpening to 60ish, the images are pretty much identical IMHO.

How do you find the G5 vs the OM-D.

Ahh yes this was a G5 thread after all :)

As is typical for me, when I buy any new gear I never get a chance to use it. Used the G5 twice really since I've got it. Handling wise it's a winner, coupled with the 100-300 it feels well balanced and very comfortable, so much better than the clunky G3. I'd go as far to say that handling wise it's right up there with the G1 as the best, even higher than the griped OM-D.

Hopefully I'll get time to process a few images this week and post on here ;-)

I've done a comparison with the same shot in LR, bumping the sharpness up to 60 and compared that to the DxO corrections and that really makes a difference (this was with the OM-D image). 3 days left on my 30 day DxO trial, I'll be sticking with LR :thumbs:
 
So are you saying with sharpness ~ 60, the two images are pretty much identical from the two programs?

LR definitely errs on the side of caution with the default sharpening.

Any insights on image quality of G5 vs OM-D?
 
First shot from my new G5 coupled with 100-300mm Panasonic lens. Apart from a slight vignette, this is out of camera.

Image wise the G5 and OM-D seem similar, although I've not really pushed (or used) the G5 for that matter yet

My impression has been very favourable of the lower ISO shots. I'm less impressed with the higher ISO shots, but then I am used to the 5D2.... Given the lenses I now have (I'll add the 35-100 when it comes out assuming the pre-reviews are good) I should be able to keep ISO low for all the sorts of shots I do....

About the same.... Taken at ISO 3200 (although not in exactly the same lighting/environment as you can see). Cropped and colour balanced through their respective profiles, everything else default processing and no noise reduction done, just exported via LR.

Encountered an issue when using the G5 in e-shutter mode yesterday. Was standing on the coast in the wind, taking a shot of a fishing boat. The e-shutter caused a sort of jelly effect on some images, where movement distorted the sea horizon and the line of the boat. I'll be sticking to normal shutter from now on.

Isn't that what you'd expect though? The electronic shutter isn't global so I think the sensor is scanned as the shutter "fires" leading to the top and bottom of the frame being taken at slightly different times.

Got any images you can post demonstrating the effect?

Yes it was kind of what I expected, deleted the images now but some of the shots it was so pronounced it looked almost funny :)

Thanks. Should have used a narrower aperture on the last one - it's only F5 - the others are F9.

BTW.: is anyone else looking in on this or is this the Julian/Andy thread?
 
Looks like it's just you and me Andy, funny considering the G5 is one of the best m43 cameras so far :geek:

Im not sure the g5 has been very widely adopted yet - has it officially been released yet in the uk or is it just lumix lifestyle voucher code early adopters?
 
I got mine from Wex (pre order), may have mentioned this previously.

A friend also has one, purchased from a camera shop in Elgin.

Loving the camera, ergonomics, image quality all fantastic. I'll get some more pictures up once I get to grips with uploading using this ******* iPad!!

Have to say that it's looking like I'll get another as a second body to go with the 35-100 I'm itching to order ;). Unless the GH3 has super image quality, it isn't worth it for me (I don't do any video work). I may even look at the OM-D(!)
 
As I mentioned yesterday the G5 at over £400 WAS a bargain, really was starting to fall for the GH3 (oh no another body) but the price is crazy the the fat body size is reducing one of the main m43 selling points
 
I was very pleased with the 200 quid g3 body I got 2nd hand, so if the g5 handling is more like the g1 I had before it'll be a winner - but yes, a silver OMD is still top of the list - despite the price difference :thumbs:
 
Had he pleasure to handle a G5 in Jessops today - was really impressed by it. Handles very nicely and the EVF is pretty good.

By comparison, the NEX7's EVF was awful. Grainy and way too small to be useful. Was quite surprised as I'd heard the NEX7 had a class-leading EVF. In my opinion it wasn't even close to the G5.

Has anyone been able to compare a G5 to the E-M5? Jessops didn't have any of the Oly on display so I still haven't managed to handle one. If the EVF is more like the Sony than the Panasonic I'll have to give the OM-D a miss.

I'd be very interested to hear Julian's comparison of the G5 to E-M5 as those are the two cameras I'm considering to replace my GF2. I thought the G5 had it in the bag on value-for-money, but that free 45mm deal on the E-M5 has just thrown a cat amongst the pigeons...
 
Two advantages I can see for the G5 are the articulated screen and the built in flash. The Oly though probably has the ultimately higher IQ for PP's and DR.

Yup. Highlight recovery seems better on the Oly. On the other hand, if it won't fit in my hands...

I agree with this.

The screen is definitely a disappointment in the E-M5 for me. My DSLR was a D5000, which had a fully articulated screen. It was great for storage, as you could flip the screen round and not worry about scratching. And with a VF, you could quickly grab a shot without needing to turn it back around. The unprotected E-M5 screen will leave me worried about it getting damaged (probably unnecessarilly so, as I'm pretty gentle with my kit).

The lack of a built-in flash is also a minor annoyance. I usually take my MFT kit out in a small bag, so I can carry the add-on flash in that, but on the occassions when I just plonk the GF2 with the 20mm in a jacket pocket, it would be an annoyance to not have the option of fill-in flash. I guess I'd just have to rememeber to slip it in the other pocket!

If I were to tweak the E-M5 design, I'd stretch the hump across the top of the camera to incorporate a flash. Would spoil the retro aesthetic no doubt, but would add a real bonus for functionality (but not battery life!). And a flip-around screen would suit me better, but I appreciate some people prefer tilt screens for from-the-hip shooting.

This is how I use my G1. the screen stays folded to the body unless I want to use it for an angled shot, I usually even review shots with the VF too.

My sister and her hubby both have Nex5's and they've fitted protective covers to the rear screens. They're not specifix Sony Nex items, they're just standard protectors bought from a mobile phone shop. They do however look perfectly ok when fitted and in fact I didn't even spot that they were after market items cut to size and fitted at home until my sister told me.

I would much rather have a fully articulated screen both for angled shots and so that I can turn the screen to the body but having seen the protectors my sister fitted I'd be a little happier with the thought of a fixed screen.
 
Hi all, I used to have a Canon 60D and three lenses but as I am getting older found it was getting a bit heavy and I like to take my camera everywhere.
Recently I sold the lot and bought a Lumix G5 with a 14mm - 14-42mm and 43-200mm lenses. I wish I had done this sooner the camera is capable of stunning images and the total weight of my gear is less than a quarter of my canon gear, I am very happy.....:)
