"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

I find that, as with many zooms, I use the 8-18 either at 8mm or 18mm. The 18mm is covered by the 12-60 PanaLeica, and 9mm is not too far from 8mm but a darned sight lighter and less bulky, not to mention faster for when I get round to doing night skies. If I do need uwa, 9mm is perfect.
I do mainly agree although having just checked a lot of my photos with this lens are at 10mm.
Might just get the 9mm and go from there, got a few quid spare from some sold off stuff.

Yep, I said the same last week:
That could replace my 7-14 very nicely.

7 & 8mm are too wide, distorted at the edges. 12, 13, 14mm are covered very nicely by the 12-60 lens.

9mm is the ultimate ultra wide angle.

I got my new 32gb class 10 memory cards today and I now have them in my Sony A7 and my Panasonic GX9, GX80, GM5 and TZ100. They really do speed things up over those old class 4's. That's £31.96 well spent :D

I'll keep the old ones as spares. I also found I had two old 8gb cards in a drawer.

I keep old ones for firmware updates.

This may be a soppy question.
In the G80 can you make it, in camera, display what focal length a picture was shot at?

Everything but, if my G9 is anything to go by, iso, aperture, exp comp, time and date etc, no focal length.
One of the few things I prefer about Olympus cameras is they display the focal length live in the evf.

On GX80

Not sure about this. Normally not. But maybe for Power Zoom Lenses (PZL)

Menu > Custom > PZL

I don't have one, so PZL is greyed out

On both my G80 and G9 as mentioned just about all other EXIF data is displayed, but not focal length.
I have never looked before, I can't see on the camera screen if a shot is 100% or not, so only use it to have a brief look in case I doubt composition or exposure.
I occasionally look on the file, but only if some one asks, or doing a post mortem on a shot.

Whilst I agree it would be nice to know, I'm not sure how knowing a focal length would help you in composition.

I was looking because I wanted to see what fl I tended towards. I dont have primes.
Can't find it in vf display or when reviewing in camera, which is where I thought it woul be.

It wouldn't, and I don't use it for that :)
I only look briefly at the screen on the camera if the composition or exposure in in doubt.

If you don't actually need it when using the camera, it is easy to see on a computer, and many programmes will display it as you step through the files

Oh yes, lightroom gives me it fine.
I was just flicking through some test shots in camera and couldn't find it.

These ones...

32gb is easily good enough for me as it gives well over 1,000 pictures. The longest holiday I've had for many years was in 2019 when we went to Singapore for just short of two weeks and I didn't even come close to filling a card despite doing a few panoramas and I can always take one of the old cards as a spare if I get to go for a long holiday again.

I use these for compacts and taking away, as I like to change cards often https://cpc.farnell.com/integral/inmsdx64g-100-70v30/64gb-premium-microsdxc-v30-uhs/dp/MD01161?st=sd card

And these for the G9 and G80 https://cpc.farnell.com/samsung/mb-mc128ka-eu/microsdxc-evo-plus-128gb/dp/MD01348?st=sd card

I only buy U3 cards now, and the size may seem large, until you start taking a few videos.

To me it is not extravagant, you travel for 24-36 hours to get there, last thing I want to do is lose all the photos :)

I don't do vid and I maybe should have bought bigger cards just in case but one thing on my mind was how big a card do cameras recognise?

I don't think that is an issue for cameras from the last few years, I just tied a G2 and it worked fine with a 128GB card, though of course older cameras can not make full use of the speed of fast cards.

Thanks, I may nab a few of those at that price to stock up on

Appreciate it.

I've been using these:

And these:

I have a 64 and 32 GB Lexar in the S5. A 32 GB Lexar in the G9 slot one and one of the others in slot two.

I've just lumped an older 128gb scandisk one into the GX8 and it says 9999 photos lol

I might buy a bigger capacity next time, but next time might be quite a way off.

Hi folks, after a little help.

Trying to source some spare batteries but can't seem to find the right ones. There is a Duracell one on Amazon but it does not list the GX9 and a million third party ones, but once you read the text many do not list the GX9.

I was thinking of just getting these from wex: https://www.wexphotovideo.com/searc...t=0&version=V2&viewType=LIST&facet.version=V2

Could anyone point me in the right direction for alternatives?

Thanks

If it helps at all... If an ad doesn't mention the GX9 but mentions the GX80 that'll do as the GX9 takes the same battery.

Extreme Pros are always the safe choice. I've used very little else for the last decade - 8GB, 32GB and 64GB - and even my old 8GBs have (claimed) 90MB/s write speed. The problem with Alan's cheapie Ultras is that their write speed isn't specified which is a bad sign but is probably 60MB/s at best. For me, the slight difference in price for the known performance makes the Extreme Pros a no-brainer.

I did look at extreme pros but maybe got a bit confused as the ones I bought state a transfer speed of up to 120mb/s whereas the cheaper extreme pros, but still more expensive than the ones I bought, quote much lower speeds. The pros I saw quoting similar or faster transfer speeds were £20 or more more expensive. Maybe the pros have faster write speeds and that makes a difference, but I didn't do any research or try and understand and I just went with buying identical cards to the one I already had which proved significantly faster than my old class 4 cards in use.

Faster cards are no doubt available but the ones I've bought do pretty much transformed the cameras I have so I can imagine how much of an improvement even better cards might be but in defence of my choice... they're cheap :D I didn't have to think about it and they're good enough for me as I'm very mostly just a single shooter. I may take several pictures quite quickly, but almost never or continuous.

So, I've been contemplating the 12-35 2.8 and 35-100 2.8 for my M43 system. But, I've read a few online reports and it seems the PL 12-60 is actually a pretty good lens with some people selling the other lenses to buy this one. My gx9 has the 12-32 kit lens on it, no idea if it's any good as I haven't taken a picture with it yet. I was thinking of putting the PL12-60 on the GX9 and getting the other lenses for my G9...now I'm thinking leaving the G9 as is and getting something for the GX9. Only other lens I have is the 40-175 (my daughter has the 40-150 and the 25 1.7). For general walk around type shots I typically take photos at around the 30-35 mm range, so thought about the Panasonic 15mm f1.7 Leica Summilux DG as this would give me circa 30 mm. What's your thoughts folks? Other option could be to try and pick up another PL12-60 and just leave that on the GX9 also.

Getting faster cards than what you camera can use doesn't make it any faster, the only advantage is you can use them when you buy a new camera that supports faster cards :)

One thing that puts me off the 12-32mm is that it doesn't have a focus ring and as I often take pictures which might need to be manually focused, such as flowers, leaves, through branches etc that really puts me off. It is very compact though with a good focal range.

I have the 12-35mm f2.8 MK1 and I do think it's a good lens. I bought it to get the flexibility of a zoom and get some of the shallower FF look that isn't possible with MFT zooms which are at f5.6 at the longer end.

I'm mostly a prime user so my choice would very likely be a prime. In the sort of range you're looking at I have the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 and 20mm f1.7 and the Olympus 17, 25 and 45m f1.8's which doesn't help you a lot as you're looking at the Panasonic 15mm :D but I think the Olympus 17mm f1.8 is worth looking at as it's a lovely metal bodied lens with a nice manual focus action.

Good luck choosing.

One PL 12-60 is enough. Or it would be for me.

I don't like the 12-32 kit lens, it's too small and fiddly. I like to support the camera with left hand under lens, right hand on wheels, buttons & touchscreen.

That PL 15mm (real nice) is a bit more substantial (comes with nice little hood too) than the 12-32. The 12-60 kit lens is really handy: smaller & lighter than the PL.

Anyway, a lens I'm lusting after is the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 ....

I have no idea what cards my cameras can support and as I tend to avoid a lot of technology these days I'll probably just be lazy and ask on the forum if I need advice on card compatibility :D
