"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Also, what's the average shutter life on these? I read the G9 is something like 200,000.
You'll probably use the silent Electronic Shutter most of the time won't you? I do. And I don't think that adds to the shutter count.

I've never felt the need to add anything to my G9, other than a couple of spare batteries.

Mind you, the G9 is one of those cameras that just suits me. I took this shot with the shop's demonstrator before I even bought my own G9!

I usually leave my cameras set to switch between electronic and manual shutters automatically so they switch at 1/4,000. I don't generally use the electronic shutter below 1/4,000 unless making a conscious decision to use the camera silently as there's the risk of banding if there's any flickering artificial lighting. There's also the risk of rolling shutter effects but to be honest I've never worried about that as I don't tend to take pictures which could be affected.

If the shutter life is 200,000 then it would take me at least 100 years to break it :p

Forgotten lenses. Here's one that hasn't seen the light of day since last year. I really must get out more.

Hi all, I have had some problems with my GH4 with the shutter sticking so have had to revert to electronic shutter. Which is ok most of the time. I was not looking forward to the bill to have it repaired then I learned to bang it on your thigh. Low and behold a fully working shutter and no problems since.

Thanks, must remember that! (y)

You didn't have a hammer handy?

Only kidding. well done :D

I have set my cameras to AUTO on the shutter so camera can choose for me
Indeed.

I feel that the second best feature on the G9 is the button which locks the mode dial. The best feature, in my opinion, is that marvelous viewfinder! It makes photographing rapid movement so much easier for me.

woof woof, in the Airforce that was called the Impact Rectification Technique. hit it with a hammer it will work. I used to hit a Vulcan Bomber several times a day.

I spent a lot of years fixing stuff but happily that rarely involved a hammer :D

Does anyone have either of these two lenses?

For my M43 I have the 45-175 HD and the Leica 12-60 lens that came with my G9 (and this 12-32 mm that came with the new GX9).

Watched a few videos on these and they could be the perfect pair of lenses, possibly all I would need really. The 45-175 mm I got for when we go to local wildlife places just to give a little zoom and the 12-60 is the one that typically stays on the G9. I am going to try the 45-175 for taking pictures of the dog on the weekend, weather permitting, but most of my photos are family, snaps of places and the dog (think I have more of the dog lol).

When I had my M50 I typically used the 22 mm pancake lens on it - what are the 20 mm 1.7 lenses like? I see sigma do a 16mm 1.4 but I assume its quite large.

I have the original 12-35mm f2.8 but not the II.

PS.
I've had both the 20mm f1.7 I and II and saw no optical difference. They're nice lenses, compact and with good image quality and IMO nice bokeh the only downside being that they seem relatively slow to focus, the Olympus 17mm f1.8 being significantly faster.

I seem to remember something about continuous focusing being an issue but I could be wrong, maybe someone can confirm or deny? Plus years back with the early cameras there was talk of this lens being the cause of a noise like effect at higher ISO's with older bodies but not due to the usual ISO noise... which all sounds odd and I haven't seen any evidence of this with later cameras so if it ever was a real issue it may have been cured with newer bodies,

I have a MK1 on my GM5.

Do I believe such a story?

No, I really don't think I do.

Anyway, here's a Vulcan, which I doubt was hit with a hammer very often, if at all...

Had those two, but both were replaced with an Olympus 12-100, i'm not one for much lens changing.

Also used an Olympus 12-40 on my GX9 until the 12-45 appeared, the latter makes for a very nice combo.
One other lens usually comes with me should I need it for low light stuff and that is the Panasonic 15/1.7

Will probably get the 9/1.7 when its released, although I do already have the 8-18, decisions, decisions?

I was comparing the save speeds of my cameras yesterday and I was surprised how much difference a new faster SD card makes... It's almost night and day and the cameras are little sports cars wit the faster card :D I'm not a machine gunner but it still makes such a difference so I'm off to order 4 new ones :D

Very nice Mark.

I haven't got one of those. I have an Olympus 9-18mm but mostly use primes, at the mo the 14mm f2.5 seems to be my favourite. I'm going to read up on that 9mm though :D

The Olympus 9mm Body cap lens is an absurdly good toy for the money - it's so small it pops in the pocket of a camera bag (or jacket). I got mine for about £50 and it's all the fisheye lens I'm ever going to want.

Examples here - but all Olympus so I won't clutter a Panny thread

MPB have one for £55+P&P

What cards are we talking about?
I'm on Sandisk Extreme Pro 170mb/s.

I use the scandisk extreme pro 170 mb/s but have the Lexar Professional 2000x ones (300 mb/s) in my S5 and in slot one on the G9.
Awww. Now I gotta buy them!
Cobra...lock this thread. :D

I just wait for them to be on sale on Amazon and use some vouchers I get to buy a few now and again. I've got a couple of the 64gb ones but most are the 32 GB ones (does me).

When I go to Disney next year I'm just going to buy 5/6 of the Scandisk extreme pro ones (happy with 32 GB if they are cheap) to take with me

I've been mostly using class 4 cards but I don't know how fast they are. I do have one Sandisk class 10 which says it does up to 120mb/s and it really speeds things up so I've ordered 4 more to fit them to all my cameras.

I almost never set the cameras to continuous shooting but I have noticed that sometimes I have to wait quite a while to review pictures and that can be a bit irritating. These newer cards will cure that. I checked the one I have in all my cameras with continuous shooting and it speeds things up wonderfully with a whole string of shots clearing faster than just one or two with the old cards so these will be easily fast enough for my Sony A7 which is 24mp and Panasonic cameras which are either 16 or 20mp.

It really did surprise me how much faster the class 10 card is.

Posting the above reminded me of when I worked for Systime and for a time fixed CDC SMD drives. My Gosh. How things have moved on :D

I got mine on flea bay for £60 needed to try something very wide and fisheye a bit and absolutely loving it

It's always a goo idea to take multiple small cards and change every day if possible, especially if you have no way of backing them up, then if you mislay one (or your camera gets liberated), you don't lose everything.

It might be worth looking at CPC Farnell for cards, I buy all mine from them, they seem resonably priced, and delivery is quick and free (order over £19 I think for free delivery)

I'm not sure what they go for these days as I've had my second hand one a long time but from what I remember the price was very reasonable. Image quality wise it's ok the main issues being the ho-hum aperture range and that it's collapsible which sort of irritates me :D but I suppose being collapsible does help to make it smaller.

People seem to go for the Panasonic equivalent but if you want something cheap, small and light I think it's probably worth looking at if you can live with the aperture range and it being collapsible. All in all I think it's probably a very decent choice at the price :D

I’m thinking of putting my Panasonic Leica 8-18 up for sale in favour of the new 9mm …

I thought about that too, but keep thinking do I really need a fast uwa lens.
Decided for now to keep the zoom mainly for the versatlity and the 8mm/2.8 is ok for night skies.

I find that, as with many zooms, I use the 8-18 either at 8mm or 18mm. The 18mm is covered by the 12-60 PanaLeica, and 9mm is not too far from 8mm but a darned sight lighter and less bulky, not to mention faster for when I get round to doing night skies. If I do need uwa, 9mm is perfect.
