"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

As it's quiet and I sometimes like to enthuse about the kit :D

I took some pictures with my GX80 and Panasonic 100-400mm today. When I'd processed them and was still sat at the pc I pointed the kit at some artificial flowers and took two pictures at 400mm. The first is f6.3 which is wide open, 1/200 and ISO 25,600 and the 2nd is f6.3, 1/25 and ISO 5,000. I then did just normal processing, spending more time and taking more care might get better results.

On both you can see the weave of the flowers even though it's smeared, it's more smeared on the 25,600 one.

When I was using DSLR's I wanted at least 1 x focal length as a shutter speed and possibly x 1.5 or 2. These days with IS if you're not shooting moving things insanely slow shutter speeds for the focal length can be used,. Then of course there's the performance at high ISO's to think about. My 5D went to 3,200 so even with an f1.4 lens I could be at 1/xx shutter speed in low light which is pretty pants for anything likely to move. With recent MFT kit you can go to ISO 25,600 and then decide if the picture is ok to keep. I don't really want an ISO 25,600 picture of artificial flowers :D but I have taken family and out and about pictures at these extreme ISO's before and kept them as they're often good enough for normal viewing as whole pictures.

Thanks for staying with me while I enthuse about the kit :D

First shot with the Olympus 60mm macro (on my trusty old GH5). I was told about that lens about 3 years ago and thought it was a toy.... whoops. Now I just need to learn how to get a result from Focus bracketing on the GH5 (which i didnt even know was a feature on the gh5.. dohhh). I didnt apply any sharpening post process either which was a very odd thing to not do.

Just a warning - I’m about to head over to UK Digital at Clitheroe to peruse a new G9 to replace the Oly E-M1ii, but don’t tell them on the Oly forum :p

Shutter button is sensitive and the evf can have a slight pin cushion effect.
Try the medium view setting for the evf, set using v mode button on the side of evf housing.

If its not too big or heavy for you I don't think you will be keeping the E-M1 ii
12-100 works well with it although you only get the lens is, but i've never found it an issue

I've got to admit I've never noticed that in practice.

Several years on, I'm still taken by how much more pleasant I find the G9's finder than that on any other camera - except the old Leica M3.

Thanks for those tips. The Oly shutter is ultra-sensitive also. In fact, so was the Z6. Just looking at the body (I have yet to charge the battery) the switches will give me more than adequate controls without resorting to customisation, which is good.

Sounds like you got it then?
The three buttons near the most welcome top lcd come in very handy, but they are not programmable.
Wired shutter release from an Olympus won't work, Panasonic use a different plug configuration.
Same goes for the little flash that comes with some Olympus cameras, G9 doesn't have the fourth hotshoe contact.

Yes, it took just over an hour to drive to Clitheroe, buy it, and drive back. Pity about the remote, but hey. Never use flash so that's not an issue. Got a wee LED panel for emergencies.

If you take photos at night you might find the Night Mode useful, Its on spanner page 2 of 5
Turns the lcd and evf to a dim Red like a submarine lighting, no bright lights to muck up your acquired night vision.

I have otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it
It might be a difference between our eyesight.

Personally, I think it's the most sorted digital camera I've used so far and it's excellent for distance work with the 100~400mm...

I like this picture. Mrs WW looking very happy at a flower show as she loves flowers although here she's looking at garden ornaments.

GM5 and 20mm f1.7 at f1.7 and a quite amazing 1/16,000 due to the base IS being 200. Thanks to this high shutter speed ability (and the camera switching automatically between the mechanical and electronic shutters) I could shoot quickly and also didn't have to fiddle with ND's.

There were lots of people taking pictures with mobile phones and very few with dedicated cameras. I only saw about three other people with cameras and all were men. One had a Nikon DSLR of some sort and the other two had what looked to be APS-C Canon DSLR's with kit lenses. I spotted one of the Canon users looking at me, I guess he was interested in the small camera I was using and maybe trying to work out what it was.

OK, so it's the ubiquitous pet photo, but it's my first photo (apart from thr wife's big toe) with my new G9 and Oly 12-100.

What's the verdict thus far on the G9?
Nicest handling camera I have used. No need for complex button reconfiguration - suits me more or less out of the box. The E-M1ii is no more.

As I've never used an Oly. What's the difference and why is the Panny better?

Oly is a great camera, but tedious to configure since there are so many functions to assign to random buttons. The G9 viewfinder is simply superb - as good as the Nikon Z6. The G9 is slightly heavier than the Oly. The G9 is very ergonomic - far better than Sony, and all the controls are in the right place (for me). Probably the oly is better for tracking but that doesn’t concern me.

Exactly and none of that messing about with leads and software updating firmware.
Check that you have updated firmware, some substantial improvements came a little while back with v2.0

Yes, I’ve installed 2.6.

That's super image, super lens.

BTW what do you regard as a 100% crop? Basically, half the original?
Did it very crudely. In LR clicked on 100% view and noted the boundaries. Then cropped to where I thought the boundaries were.

Happier stuff.

Firstly, there's no criticism of the seller here as the issue I found could be easily missed and me and the seller agreed on a price that I hope we're both happy with.

Glad you got it all sorted and are enjoying playing with it.

Yup. I've used it a lot and it's almost displaced my Sony A7 as it's just so small. I've been using it with a 20mm f1.7.

Not sure what type of fly this is but flip me the oly 60mm is a bananas lens for the price. I dont think I could get anything that much better with a Canon r5 / rf 100mm macro.
I still dont get how the "video camera" GH5 holds up so well for photos either but at the moment its saving me nearly 5 grand.

Hey guys,

I've seen this advertised locally, with no decent close up pics and no proper description other than copy&pasted blurb.

Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 Camera
M.Zuiko Digital ED 75–300mm F4.8–6.7 II
M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-200mm F3.5-6.3

I'm not familiar with either of these lenses, and MPB don't currently have either in stock.

What would you say the three items are worth?

Thanks

Apart from the camera in my opinion not worth buying.
Unless you want to keep them the lenses are not the best or that easy to shift.
I guess without warranty all three for about £900 or thereabouts

You can buy the body new for around £500. As Rich says, the lenses will disappoint you, so best avoided.
