(they weren't keen on the Olympus M4/3 something to do with company being taken over or something, but hey that is just an opinion)

FWIW Olympus sold off their camera division last year - the new company is OM Digital Solutions and the brand is OM System
Here's their awful website :)

They're releasing new products and selling the existing lines under the Olympus brand.

And are about to announce a new camera next week

My favourite picture from the day. We bought this book at a dog charity shop as we're both dog lovers but it's actually quite a hard read for someone who's first language is not English.

That looks similar to somewhere I went last year when we stayed in North Yorkshire.
In the first photo is that Saltburn in the distance?

Yes. All three pictures were taken at Redcar pointing towards Marske and then Saltburn.

I'd taken my car in for a service at a garage in Marske and we then normally walk to either Saltburn or Redcar. Mrs WW prefers to walk to Redcar as there are more shops whilst I prefer Saltburn for the funicular rail lift, pier and general scenery.

The best place for fossils is round about the Marske area, I always look when we walk on the beach.

The walk there and back is normally around 16k-18k steps.

Thanks, thought it looked very familiar
We stopped off in Marske, parked in a road that led down to a ramp and the beach.
Fish and Chips from the shop in town were nice too.
Also went to Redcar, fish and chips again from a shop in a turning just past the lifeboat house.

Didn't see Saltburn at its best, the funicular was closed and the whole place was packed solid.
Favourite place was out past the steelworks, Paddy's Hole and fishermens huts on a man made spit of land.

Well pulled the trigger on a G9 today with the 12-60mm Leica lens. Haven't managed to play around with it too much, but it's not too dissimilar to my S5 by the looks of it (I actually prefer the grip on the G9). I've updated to the latest firmware 2.6 and looks to be a great purchase for me. My daughter traded all her M50 mkii kit in for a G9 body, the 25mm 1.7 Lumix lens and a spare battery. That little 25mm lens looks to be a cracking little lens also.

So now the "I'm not looking for anymore lenses" starts lol

Nice.

I've been trying to take the GM5 and 20mm out with me every day. I keep a 45-150mm on my GX80 for anything interesting that lands in the garden or flies over and for the odd day out. My GX9 hasn't been used for a while. I think I prefer the GX80 in an inverse snobbery sort of way because it was cheap :D

I'll look forward to seeing your pictures.

I've been looking at the 44-150 lens (£175 ish on Amazon assuming it's the same one you have). My G9 is really my travel camera, so I won't be buying too much for it if I'm honest. Just a couple of lenses (more telephoto) for taking here and there with us on holiday. My main camera (the one I use for my course and if I'm going out locally) is my S5.

My G9 is permanently married to the 100~400. I was persuaded into buying the G9 when I went out to buy the zoom. There was a substantial discount offered on the two together plus genuinely interest free credit, so I treated myself. It's proved itself as the best long lens system I have used so I've no regrets whatsoever. :naughty:

On another note, I have stuck some 64gb scandisk extreme 170 mb/s cards in the G9 as my other 300 mb/s cards are in my S5. Will these be okay, or should I buy new memory cards that are the higher speed? I don't use video if that helps.

Those are the read speeds. You need to compare the write speeds to see if there's really much difference between them but I would strongly suspect that you'll be fine with the slower cards unless you're taking long bursts in RAW.

I see from a rumor site there's a GH6 coming, It's not something I'll be interested in buying but I'll watch and read the reviews.

They say it's good to format your card in camera regularly ... cleans it up, makes it faster.

I do that every time, and I never download from the camera, only via a card reader. Never had any card errors.

I always download from the camera never a card reader, my theory being that constant removal and insertion of the card into and out of the slot in the camera could cause connection problems. This was because I remember from my computing days how few insertions some backplanes were rated for.

In reality though there's no way around the making and breaking of connections as if I'm not removing and reinserting the memory card I'm plugging in and unplugging a USB cable.

Wireless is the way forward :D

I've just posted this in the daily picture thread but I wanted to talk about the kit so I thought I'd post it here too...

This seems to have lost some sharpness here which is disappointing but it's sharp on my screen. It was taken with my GM5 and 20mm f1.7 at f1.7, 1/125 and ISO 2,000 with eye detect. There is noise but it's ok. I like mirrorless for several reasons and one is that with face/eye detect you can concentrate on composition and don't have to worry about your focus point being away from the centre of the image where DSLR focus points are usually clustered. I didn't even have to squat down and look at the evf as I could compose and shoot on the back screen.

Haven't had chance to use my G9 yet really (played around in the house with it) and have to say the little 25mm 1.7 lens my daughter got appears to be a fab little lens (I'm not a professional).

My photography class is on tomorrow, but it's playing with light, so assume dark pictures with lighting sources coming from different angles. So will end up taking the S5 I think (which I believe is great in low light personally).

Can't wait to get out with the G9 though and test that 12-60 mm L lens.

I don't think that lens was out when I got mine. Prime wise I have the Panasonic 14mm f2.5, 20mm f1.7 and Olympus 17, 25 and 45mm f1.8 all bought used.

GX80 and 45-200mm.

The GH6 has been leaked to death in the last day or two ... masses of videos on yootoob.

The SD card is a sliding connection with nice large contact areas so more likely to survive repeated use than a tiny USB socket.

And backplanes exert higher pressure on the terminals, hence the use of zero force insertion tools (on IBM mainframes at least).

If you use the USB socket and that fails you have removing the card to fall back on but if the card slot fails you need to send the kit in for repair.

Waaaaay back I worked in the repair dept of Systime computers and I sat there all day repairing kit to component level. Later when I repaired whole units which connected to other things I was amazed that unplugging something and plugging it back in cured a problem, a connection problem. Later still when I got out of the repair centre and into field repair I found that connection problems were the norm with some kit. As you mentioned IBM, with some IBM kit I never came across a true electronic fault, it was always a connection problem or some other mechanical issue.

I've never had a card slot or a USB plug fail on a camera, but the reluctance to break and remake internal connections such cards into slots has stayed with me, possibly without any real reason :D

Oh, I’ve had cards fail in IBM mainframes. Had to get them couriered up by motorbike at night from Greenford stores. But yes, a large amount of failures on electronic equipment in all fields, particularly cars, are down to poor connections.

My favourite brand of desktop kit in the early 1980s was Olivetti. The M21/M24 series just never caused trouble. I'm sure someone else will report a different experience, though. :naughty:

Until the late '70s I only worked on room-sized mainframes. Mainly IBM, but latterly Data General.

I feel lucky to have worked on such a wide range of kit and to have seen such great changes, makes me wonder what'll come in the future.

Wasn't it the boss of Dec who said no one would need a computer in their home? Now most people can't put theirs down :D

At Systime they had a "micro computer" which we were encouraged and even pushed to take home and fiddle with but most people put it in a cupboard for a couple of weeks and then handed it on. I did exactly that and never took it out of the box. I always wondered if it was all still in there and if it worked as as far as I know no one got it out and fiddled with it. In those days we spent out time getting drunk, fiddling with cars and chasing women. Happy days :D
