"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

View attachment 261632

I have gone the other way, I will still extoll the benefits of m4/3 but only moved to it because of the need to save weight, my Olympus has gone, the Panasonic gear is packed and ready to go, deal already done.
The Nikon Z50 has allowed me to get back to where I wanted to be, it will not be as good in some areas but they are the areas I can no longer do anyway.
If the latest update for the G9 works it will cover its only weaknes.

The Z50 looks decent, pty it didn't have IBIS or I might have given it more of a look. But as is I don't see anything about it the XH1 doesn't offer. I'm only pondering as per usual anyhow, I'll probably stick with the Fuji. But I do miss those cheap used tele and prime lenses for m43. And no other system is beating that IBIS

It put me off to start with then it hit me I don't use IBIS I use long lenses with it and use that.

From what I've seen of it it's a nice performing camera, they need more Z-DX lenses though, a 2.8 zoom with OIS would be ideal, though expensive.

Seems not, BUT, looking on Park they have a bit of a cracking deal on there for the G9 + PL 12-60 2.8-4, for 1299 you also get a 128GB SD, a camera bag and a 25mm 1.7 prime.

That's a cracking deal.

Panasonic are giving a free 25mm f1.7 with the G9 and GH5 until Dec 01st.

Can't imagine many people buying a G9 wanting it that much, same as Olympus including a 30mm Macro with the E-M1 ii
Think I would wait until after Christmas and see if a decent cashback offer appears, quite often gets doubled at the Photo Show

Why not? The 25 1.7 is a very decent lens, performs way better than it's price point might suggest. If nothing else, you can sell it on for £120 or so

You can sell it, but just a bare G9 with double cashback would still be my preference.
Last year at an early trade show they were selling for £789.99, I know because I nearly bought one.
Still think the like new one on the Amazon Warehouse with the 12-60 is a good bet at 783 quid

Bought a few things like that, just yesterday got an already reduced Drill Press for a Dremel with the extra 20% off
Earlier in the week picked up a WD Passport Wireless Pro 2TB for £78 instead of just under the usual £200
Mainly find the like new ones have a damaged box or the seal has been broken.
If you don't like it send it back, no concerns they will say you have used it and you still get the 12 months warranty

G9 is only £769 at e-infinity at the moment, bargain imo. UK Digital also have a great deal on the new S1 full frame at only £1199 after cashback.

That's a cracking deal on the S1 !!

Has anyone actually bought a camera at these excellent prices or is it just window shopping and tyre kicking?

Spent out on a lens and don't want another camera really, but bargain priced G90 could tempt me
Too much arthritis in my hands and elbows for the larger heavier G9, tried one again last week and my hand cramped up

I'm just tyre kicking, really. I've got a G9 and EM1 ii and I'm delighted with them.
It's difficult to resist a bargain though, isn't it!
Sorry to hear about the arthritis - I've also got it in a few places, including my hands, but not locking up regularly yet.

Tire kicking I guess, I would have to sell my Fuji gear to switch and at the moment it's more a buyer's market with all these sales about. The G9 is similar in size and weight and grip to my XH1 so that is where I would look to, I'd probably get a 12-40 again and some form of tele, the 100-300 perhaps to start. Bu going through the whole haggling with buyers wanting you to match Chinese or discount prices and then some is too much a chore for me right now. Happy enough with my Fuji, but I know I'd be equally as happy with the G9

Looks like the G9 (with animal focus) and the Olympus 300mm F4 are a great combo. Quite impressed with the animal detect AF on this considering the branches around it. Also, although I've run it though a little NR, I dont' think it's too bad for ISO 2500 ?

New 12mm f/1.4 lens came and i'm very impressed, good wide open and excellent by the time f/2 is reached.
Bit nippy out there today for a thorugh test, had a lot of problems with arthritis and Raynauds the last few years
Hard to do much when your fingers hurt and have no feeling in them, very off putting

Its a keeper, might have to have a sale soon, that's the 12mm focal length over catered for by 8-18, 12-35, 12-40 and now the 12
Hope to get a photo or two up soon, might be a bit less chilly tomorrow, only managed a high of 4.6c here today

Assistance required......

I've done the 2.0 firmware update on my G9, everything is working well.
My problem is I can't find where in the menu you chose whether autofocus should select close or far subjects. I've been totally through the menu 3 times and I still can't find it!
Also - would Panasonic yet have an supplementary manual explaining the use and control of the updated features?
Thanks.

There’s a new manual updated for firmware 2.0 available for download. The updates from the various firmwares and their functions are listed at the back.

its located in [menu] / [custom] / [focus / release shutter] / [AF/AE lock] - and they are two of the options under AE Lock

I think @RedRobin is waiting for his MC-20 so might be interested in a couple of images I took today with the 300mm f4 and the MC-20.
Both images are cropped - The Egyptian Geese were about 200 yards away, and the Stock Dove about 60 yards or so.

Thanks Andrew - much appreciated (y)

Two things put me off the 10-25, the cost and the size.

I think the point you make on size is probably more relevant than the cost issue.
David Thorpe reckons the lens could take the place of 3 primes - 12mm, 17mm and 25mm.
Again, that is more relevant if you are starting from scratch, and do not already have those primes!

Yes, it's huge, even compared to the Leica 12-60 which I use the most on my GH5. If you need the speed then I guess the compromise is worth it, but I'm quite happy with the Olympus 9-18 and Panasonic 25 1.7. Cheaper, smaller and lighter, especially when used on my second body, the GX80.

I have the Olympus 17, 25 and 45mm f1.8's and if I want wider I have zooms starting at 12 and 14mm. I have fancied a 12mm prime for a long time though.

Anyway, this zoom is big and it is expensive but I agree with Malcolm and it's the size that's the biggest issue for me.

Still... It does look lovely doesn't it? :D

I have one of those and although the collapsible build annoys me at times it's a very compact and light lens and cheap too.

I have seen the 10-25 in the flesh and its a monster, both in size and weight terms
Not one I desire really, well covered at the focal lengths it provides
I'm more than happy with the 8-18 and recently purchased 12 f/1.4, also have the 25mm f/1.4

I bought a 100-400mm off Bobsyeruncle and this has given me cause to praise MFT again :D

Just the moon and 100% from that. Please note that these may all lose a bit from the posting process.

Mrs WW walked in so at 100 and 400mm.

These may be ordinary and really unremarkable pictures but what's impressed me again is that the first Mrs WW picture is at ISO 12,800 and the second is at ISO 25,600 and they're perfectly useable pictures even after just basic processing by a useless at it me.

As I might have said before, when I think back to my Canon days with the APS-C 300D,10D and 20D and even the FF 5D this sort performance was unthinkable and now it's available in a relatively small package. As someone once said, we've never had it so good :D

Anyway, I just wanted to enthuse a bit. Carry on :D

PS.
I forgot to say that these were taken with a Panasonic GX80.

It is a great lens, most complaints come from people who cant use long lenses, going down memory lane with you my first DSLR (which i still have from new) was the Nikon D70 max iso 1600, max useable iso ??????

Actually my point of reference is the Nikon SLR which was my first serious camera. It was fine in daylight but we used to go to music gigs and with ISO 1,600 film and probably being stuck at 1/20 to 1/50 there'd be noise and motion blur which no one complained about at the time because the prints were small and small prints can hide a lot. I knew the gap between what I wanted to get and what I could though.
