"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Just to add, I do think the G80 is a superb all rounder at everything! It just offers so much! Even down to the little things like superb in camera RAW processing - so easy and so quick!

I think I would just send it back I'm afraid! alas, I've just bought the Leica 25mm prime so no need! I will be getting rid of the kit 12-60 but I know thats not quite in the same league! Hmm well I really like the G80! I just need to convince myself I don't need or notice the extra sensor size on the m50 for me to get rid of the M50 and then gradually eradicate the EFS lens I have and be sole Panasonic!

I thought about the M50 for a bit, simply because I've never owned a Canon dslr or ml camera, and never got to try out their lenses. But the more I look into it, the more it seems to be a downgrade from the G80. Articles like this made me re-think that switch: http://cameraergonomics.blogspot.com/2018/08/mirrorless-ilc-comparison-canon-eos-m50.html

The slightly larger sensor [remember, Canon APSC is 1.6x crop] of the M50 doesn't seem to offer any advantage IQ-wise. The Pany G80 is much better built, it's weather sealed, has full 4K, a better evf, has a much better native lens selection, better ergonomics, more on body physical controls etc ...

I know exactly what you mean! But but but,,something in me makes me still like it! But I know realistically, the G80 is better! Think its more an emotional thing that I don't want to loose it, the fist camera I had was Canon, and this will probably be the last Canon as well!

The M50 looks a great little camera, don't get me wrong. But the G80 just seems better in every way, I even forgot to add proper, decent IBIS! The #1 reason I bought mine in the first place.

Having sold off one of my Panasonic G9 bodies recently (and was thinking about selling the other and just keeping the EM1 MK II), I'm pleased I decided to take the G9 with me for a long weekend to London a few weeks ago. Weather on the Saturday was atrocious, but brightened up on the Sunday and Monday quite nicely. Only took 3 lenses - my Olympus 12-100 F4 Pro, my Lecia 8-18 F2.8-4 and my Olympus 25mm F1.2 Pro. The whole system worked brilliantly. Here's just a few shots. I have to say, I love the Olympus 12-100 more and more. Even on the G9, it's tack sharp from wide open at all apertures, and the IS seems to work quite well even with a Panny body.

A very wet City Hall on the Embankment

Of course it works fine, the G9's IBIS is as good as it gets, doesn't need any assistance.

Ah, but I had the IS on the lens on, which from what I have read means IBIS on the G9 is turned off (AFAIK, the G9 won't do Dual IS with non Panasonic lenses) ?

Stand to be corrected though ?

Oh, I thought it was other way around with Oly lenses on Panasonic bodies? One of us is right at least :D

Just had a quick scout about, seems nobody really knows, some saying you can switch between lens OIS and body IBIS, but you can't have both at once with this combination, others say you can only use lens OIS - the way to know for sure, is switch the lens OIS switch on, see if the IBIS symbol on camera is green or greyed out, try the lens switch both on and off. When IBIS is active the hand/stabilization symbol would be green

A warning has been given for this post
Ok then, so following on from my question a few weeks ago i won a more or less brand new GX8 of ebay a week or so ago. It came with the standard 12-60 kit lens but condition of the body is as new so i'm pleased. I think this will do for now and see how i get on with it with a view to perhaps a G9 next year at some point. MOD EDIT : TRADING ATTEMPT REMOVED

You never will get access if you try buying on the chat threads.

Apologies i never knew this was going to cause offence, i merely stated i can't gain access and would like to buy. Are you banning me from ever buying on here even if i reach the post count? I've been on here a few weeks and have not tried to manipulate my post counts for the sake of it and have only stuck to what is pertinent to me showing no wish to manipulate anything.

he's right you know

Thanks for pointing that out. The weird thing is the GX8 i bought "of ebay" could have been from a member on here it's entirely possible. Must say i had a very friendly experience on there.

I think you will find that the mods are also people and take into account that your new . so just carry on posting and when you reach your statutory figures I would think you'll be fine

I understand forums have rules, and for good reason, to prevent bad eggs affecting the forum. I'm most definitely not one of them. Thanks for the encouragement. :)

Rich isn't banning you from anything. He can't, he's not a staff member. I am, and I'm not banning you from anything either. I was simply pointing out that if you DID continue to try and trade outwith the classifieds, and it was reported, then there would be a possibility that you'd never get the "upgrade" after 60 days and 25 posts (or whatever it currently is...)

As Jeff has stated, we're actually quite reasonable people (until provoked...) and we don't go overboard when new people basically just don't read or understand the classifieds rules and the reasons behind them. But, we DO have to post and let everyone else in the thread know we're aware of it, or EVERYONE else who reads the damned thread will also report you, and the staff notice board will light up like a christmas tree :)

ETA: congratulations on the new camera from fleabay BTW... As you say, it COULD have been a member on here that was selling it - we don't really know or care what happens on Ebay, stays on Ebay, and they can sort out any problems with the trade - we just try and look after our members when they buy and sell on here as best we can.

Exactly as Mark says, my comment was just a jokey way of saying be careful if you do wish to use the classifieds when you qualify.
To be honest they are not exactly a treasure trove, been abused by a few serial traders over the years and other profiteers
One really positive thing is the trust factor, no doubt helped by having to post a while before access is granted and the excellent feedback system.

Thanks. I'm on 3 Audi car forums for the very old cars i own and there's never any problem with newbies buying, only they have to wait selling when post count is reached so i think that's what has caught me out and as you rightly said not reading the rules on this forum. I've seen what looks like a lovely example of the 12 - 40 Oly 2.8 pro lens on ebay but not sure it's a good idea to buy when it's over years old and out of warranty. Dilemmas all-round i'll just bide my time and hopefully when post count gets higher and i qualify can check out the adds on here. Cheers Mark.

Cheers. I totally agree with you about your experience of "serial traders and profiteers" unfortunately forums aren't immune and it can be difficult to differentiate between honest enthusiasts and traders.

Personally I wouldn’t be to fussed about selling on here ,most of the members are pretty clued up about prices and your selling to and buying from a limited audience . For instance I had a item recently advertised on here for several weeks that simply wouldn’t sell , it wasn’t shifting on the bay either but then someone pressed the buy it now for £20 more than it was on here for .
I sell on e/bay using there global shipping program and often achieve very good prices indeed and with a carefull eye out for bargains and mis- advertised items bargains can be had . I.e bought a lens today that went through at 5a.m this morning ? I was the only bidder ,put in a bid before bedtime last night .

Nice!

Your lens becomes a 71 - 284 I think, not sure on the F stop, does it show the change on the display? Something like f/3 - f/4

Good lord that’s all it becomes!? I was expecting 600mm at least! Yes it has about f3.5 I think? I’m tempted to see if I can get a better copy of the EFM1 that doesn’t have these errros as that would make it formidable! The AF is very very good with these two lens, with the EFm2 adapter, for those wondering. Pretty much no complaints from me!

It would be 568mm in terms of FF equivalent. It reduces remember, not adds ;) You pay for the length with brighter aperture. Think how expensive a 500mm F4 would be on full frame

It's probably best suited to shorter primes, as you get the extra stop of light and extra width, say an 85 1.8 - with the ef-m2 it becomes a 60mm f/1.3

So yeah, the EF-M1 for tele lenses, the M2 for shorter

What are you sighing for? seems like you're doing your usual try-harding to create an argument out of nothing. Did you even read my post? Seems not so much, as I didn't say any such thing

I sigh because you seemed to miss the point which was in no way fan boy or argumentative or having a pop at anyone as you appeared to be doing in your post, maybe not me but at others with a different view to yours.

For starters it wasn't aimed at you or I would have quoted, I'm not shy about letting anyone know I'm using them as an example as you well know. I'm tired of a bunch of you in the other threads going around in circles, same handful everytime, and I wouldn't be surprised one bit if it put newcomers right off. Only point I made here is vintage lenses are not bought for their sharp qualities, I don't really give a damn which cameras they work best on, I'm only going to be using them on the one I own so that is all that matters to me.
What you actually said was that legacy lenses perform better on MFT. I disagree with that. Anyone interested in making their own mind up can compare lens performance across the formats if they have access to the gear. Some seem to agree that native MFT lenses tend to perform better than legacy lenses and that legacy lenses perform better on FF as they need to work less hard due to being magnified less.

I do agree that legacy lenses can have their own look and I've said as much many times, it's partly why I use them.

As for putting people off, I've no doubt that you do as you've probably been involved in more arguments and name calling than you've had hot dinners. In thread after thread.

This is a Panasonic thread, can we keep it to that? Gear talk or images, there's a reason for the thread title. Save the silly arguments for the Sony thread, you've been asked nicely before. You seem to be the one missing the point, nobody in here cares about FF or they'd be shooting it.

I mention other makes and formats when I think it's relevant to the discussion. I'm not on a MFT, APS-C or FF crusade here. I've been with MFT since the early days but the format and the kit doesn't exist in a vacuum and sometimes a little comparative evaluation is nice. Yes this is a Panasonic thread but you're not the forum police. If you object to my posts call a mod or better still use the ignore button. It'll be an absolute pleasure not to swap posts with you again :D

I think you'll find I didn't say that, it was blackfox ... Forum Police? I thought you were old not a child? :D You won't find me snitching, snitches get stitches :D

I just don't want to see Sony crap in here is all, it's everywhere else as it is, nothing against you using the gear, it's just the place for it here. The problem is really, that once a discussion starts on other gear, it can drag on, and on ... you know how it goes

Yep it was me and I,ll stick with my p.o.v on that ,I will actually concede that both types of lens are similar in performance on MFT .i have a growing collection of legacy glass , bought two in the last two days in fact , but my weapon of choice is still the PL100-400 . . My other favourite lens at this moment in time is a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 ais ..perhaps if I had other Panasonic / Olympus primes I might change my mind .

Sounds like you did well. I have no intention at all to sell anything on here as i'm just an enthusiast. I merely wanted to spread my net wider than ebay as it's my sons birthday end of the month and i'd like to sort something out for that occasion. Ebay has a few of the 12-40 2.8 pro lenses but mostly from dealers whom i'd rather not buy from unless they could state only a few months old and as new which they don't mostly which makes you wonder what are you really buying? I paid £570, open auction, for the GX8 but it's as good as new all boxed etc etc and came from Verwood near Ringwood. Thats a clue if it was someone on here lol. He was also selling a 42.5m F 1.2 Pany Leica Nocticron which i narrowly missed out on, again as new hardly touched but there we are. If only he had the 12 - 40 Oly pro lens. I'm getting impatient as the weather will be closing in all too soon.

I'd buy the 12 - 35 f2.8 Panasonic lens but it falls just a bit too short for me being equivalent 70mm so that's the reason why it's the Oly.

You could try getting a grey import which would be new and cheaper , there’s panamoz , or e.infinity and h.dew all are trusted dealers , if you go down the used path there’s mpb, wex, and London camera exchange all trusted sellers with warranty on used
