"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Just ordered a gx1 as had one previously but sold for the omd. now wanted a second body to go with my omd at £250 after cashback it was a no brainer.
 
Congrats Thunderbird, noticed youd been looking. What also swayed me was the price, in order to get anything better Id need to spend a lot more. A grey OMD with 20mm would roughly be £900 after selling the 12-50mm. A UK GX1 with 20mm is a mere £460 after cashback. I cant really justify a grab n go costing that much, as much as Id like the OMD.

Yes and it is pretty good, especially in strong sunlight. At night it is distracting as you are shining a torch into your eye. I kind of like having the option of having it available but not making the camera bigger when not needed. Bloody expensive though.

Thanks, it does sound a good option, as the gx1 is nice and compact without it but when needed it would be nice to have. Just makes the package cost quite a lot more than a G3. Guess you have to pay for convenience.

This is my biggest problem with my G1 and if that one thing could be cured with different EVF technology I'd very probably sell my 5D and lenses and just use MFT.

I'm going to wait and see what Panny and Oly bring out in the near future and I hope that the low light / night shooting torch in the eye problem goes away and if it does I'll be very happy... Actually, I've just remembered another problem with the current EVF's, in very low light mine just goes black and wont display anything. It still manages to shine a torch into my eye though.
 
I was in the town today, passed Jessops??? . . . well one cant go past can one? I thought 'G5' . . . very disapointed, it looks almost the same size as the Nikon D3200 next to it, it did not come to hand comfotably like the G1. It has lost the semi retro/Lica'ish look . . . that alone makes me still prefer my G1. The one + point, EVF is very, very good. Would I part with my cash, a big chunk of cash . . . nah, I dont take pictures in the dark so my old faithfull comfy G1 stays.

That's one opinion, I have the opposite, yes the G1 was one of the best handling bodies, but the G5 for me feels fantastic, with some nice new features (better LCD, rocker switch, 16mp sensor, etc)

I've consdiered it for my GX1 but I don't find the lack of EVF an issue - probably not used it enough in the sun

I took 21 portrait orientation pictures and made this...

I'm pleased with the quality of the stitch, I really can't see a fault, but I'm gutted that I lost the top of the chimney and pole :shake: I'll have to shoot it again another day.

Mine was 55mm hand held but I think next time it'll have to be 28mm to keep the very top of the chimney and pole. I'd really like to get close to the works but there were lots of stern looking big blokes in fluorescent jackets about. I'd like to get in and take some shots of the processes and molten steel and stuff :D

In my case... CS5 does it all for me. There's nothing to do except select the images to combine and crop the final image.

In my area keeping scraggy looking horses on any available patch of ground is becoming the norm.

Though on that particular case, because I'd had to do two horizontally parallel rows, tipping the camera upward, it left it with a pronounced bow to the image. Straightened everything up with Puppet Warp before cropping.

By best mate's dad used to work at the various steelworks and his job was to take photos of accidents and remains and stuff.
His fridge was full of medium-format film rolls.
He never talked about it really ... died of diabetes long ago. One time maybe : the tale was someone fell into a blast furnace when it was being cleaned and died/cooked/splatted.
(Best mate is still alive, that sounded grim)

How about organising a TPForum outing to photograph molten stell and stuff?

Thank God health and safety has improved so much :D My father worked at British Steel and ICI and one story he told stayed with me... Three guys opened a valve or door or something they shouldn't have and were instantly killed leaving only an ash shadow on the floor.

Years ago I used to get into all sorts of industrial places as a part of my job and I had my own little health and safety nightmares but I'd still love to get in and photograph these places.
 
I own a G3 plus, 20mm, 14-45mm and 45-200mm lenses. however, as much as I love the camera I want a GF2 or 3 body to slip the 20mm on and then drop into my wifes handbag when we are out!

I have seen used GF2 and once a GF3 for around £100. Can anyone explain if the differences between the two camera's is significant given my intended use of low light? When I want better quality I will take my G3 out :)

GF2 is a dumbed down GF1, GF3 is a further dumbed down GF2

All 3 have the original 12MP M43 sensor

I use the GF3 + 20mm as a (relatively) portable camera for gigs, night's out or taking somewhere when I am not sure if I will take any pictures but want a camera 'just in case'. It's great for that - but nowhere near as good as say a Nex at high iso. If you are not in a hurry it might be worth waiting for prices on the E-PM2 to drop as that has a much better sensor - even the latest Panasonic GF model (GF5) still has the the 12mp sensor, so the E-PM2 with the OMD sensor should be a significant improvement. Or if you want to stick with Panasonic the GX1 and 16mp sensor, which is a good deal at £250 after cashback (but a bit bulkier than the E-PM2/GF3/5. It's only slightly bigger than a GF2 though: http://camerasize.com/compare/#183,241
 
Hi all,

I made the mistake of popping into my local Jessops this afternoon for a mooch and had a play with the Panny G3 and G5... I was impressed with both and so I came home to do a bit of research. Believe it or not, Jessops were cheaper than the usual Hong Kong suppliers by a country mile.

I'm now the owner of a G3 and kit lens but my missus has the 14mm for her GF3 so I can pinch that for now! :)

I've been after a m4/3 camera for a while and really had a desire to go for the OM-D but I couldn't justify the difference in price for something that's not going to get a massive amount of use.

I'd like to add a macro lens at some point so I'd welcome any suggestions.

These mono conversions all taken with the G5 & 100-300mm. The first one obviously had a lot of textures applied and a little on the second.

Damien Hirst's latest controversial statue situated in the harbour of Ilfracombe, North Devon. The statue standing 20m tall and weighing 25 tones

I have so far managed to talk myself out of buying the 100-300, thinking the 45-200 is good enough.

Love the colours of the boat in the last and it looks bang on crisp. The statue is dreadful IMHO but nothing to do with your pictures.

Thanks Chris, the 100-300 is one of the best lenses I've ever owned, including the Canon 100-400 I used on my previous 5D2.

Yes the statue little different, although I don't mind this kind of art, it looked completely out of place in ilfracombe harbour
