You may be finding currently that because of the noise you are limiting your iso to 1600 or so which in turn will give a slower shutter speed and therefore blur.

With the GX1 and G3 you can easily use 3200, and 6400 in some situations, without too much noise.

The 45mm oly lens is a small, super sharp and fast lens - the d7000 and 35mm is not really the same size/weight

Send me a image taken with 45mm in low light at 1.8 and 6400iso please tell me what shutter it was at. Night time photography and dull days being hard at moment with the kit lens indoor
 
Having to have a rummage for my G1 warranty card. It is producing really dull and life-less images and I am hoping that it is not down to user error. I have not used it for a while but thought about resurrecting it for my Edinburgh trip. I took some initial photos and found a noticeable difference in the image quality. Any thoughts?!? Could have negative exposure compensation dialled in, or try shooting with different settings P, A, S or M and see if it is still present.
 
It's all foggy and atmospheric and spooky here so I thought I'd take a few shots of the spookiness. Sadly after only 6 shots my G1 EVF was burning a hole in my brain and I had to change to my 5D.

This is the biggest failing of my current camera. I could live with the relatively poor higher ISO performance as it's often not an issue in a whole image but the light output from the EVF makes low light shooting a literal pain for me after just a few shots and the effect lested a good 10 minutes.

If any CSC maker can overcome this I'll be happy to offload my 5D and lenses but at the moment the 5D simply blitzes the unusable for more than a very few shots in low light G1.
 
Anyone got a G3? I had my mind made up to buy a Canon 600D but feel I might get more use out of a camera with a more compact body.

Any views on the G3 gratefully received.

Good camera, horrid handling for me though, never felt quite right. If you can get one cheap I'd recommend it!

I had one briefly and would have kept it if I hadn't been lusting after an OM-D

What were you not impressed with? The G5 is supposed to be an improvement in ergonomics over the g3

I didn't go further than just holding it to be honest. It seemed far too small to be comfortable. A shame as I re\lly hoped I would like it. The G5 will be out of my price range unfortunately.

I hope to have my G3 delivered tomorrow, I love my D5100 but I want something a bit more portable for when I tour on my motorbike, I did have a Nex-5n but couldn't live without a viewfinder, that was a major selling point for me.

Can anyone give me a heads up on what compatible lenses are available for the G3 with an adapter ?

If you are happy with manual lenses almost anything with an aperture ring will fit via an adapter. I have Olympus Zuiko and Minolta Rokkor lenses and I'm very happy with them. Canon FD lenses seem popular too.

Thanks, do you have any recommendations for a portrait lens and something that would do for cityscapes such as New York ?
 
IMVHO you can use almost any lens for any purpose :D but I suppose generally people tend to think of portrait lenses as being of longer focal length so if you are looking at older manual lenses maybe a 50mm f1.8 (equiv 100mm) or 135mm (equiv = 270mm) f3.5 both are easily available.

For city scapes I'd imagine that you'd want something wider? If that's the case you'll struggle to find any cheap legacy lenses wider than 24 or 28mm but the good news is that the Panasonic 14-42mm "standard" zoom is quite cheap and is IMVHO an adequate little lens.

In fact, a Panasonic 14-42mm and a fast prime or two may be all that you'll need :D

PS. I bought Minolta Rokkor 28mm f2.8, 55mm f1.7 and 135mm f3.5 and I think they're all very nice lenses but I can't fit them to my 5D without using an adapter with a corrective lens in it (which will degrade image quality) to enable infinity focus. I also have Olympus Zuiko 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 135mm f3.5 and they work very well on both by Panny G1 and 5D with just metal adapters.

I also have a Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 which is simply a lovely thing :D

A GH2 (or an old GH1 if you can find one) is a little bit bigger but it's not a massive difference. If you find even those too small then it may be that micro 4/3 is not going to work for you.

Ordered a GX1 after being disappointed by the X100 AF and trying various compacts instore (RX100, X10, LX7), they were alright but felt like to much of a step down from my main camera, the GX1 felt great and I liked all the manual controls, hope I did the right thing.

They are both extremely capable cameras, but my personal views are this (in no particular order)....

GX1 beats OM-D

Smaller body style
Built-in pop-up flash
Nicer laid out menus
Certain functions easier to set such as exposure bracketing
Chroma noise corrected in-body
Grip size and shape
Price

OM-D beats GX1

Better usable high ISO
Wider dynamic range
SD card slot not on bottom of body
Higher frames per second at full res
In-body stabilisation
Weather sealed
Retro looks
Built in viewfinder
OLED rear screen
Tilt rear screen
More buttons/dials
 
Suppose the thing that makes it tough for me is I already have a D700 and primes so a smaller camera does make more sense, although I like the OMD VF and IBIS it probably doesnt make the most sense, if Im carrying a bag I may as well carry the D700 where I can put the GX1 in my pocket if it has a prime on?

I have a 5D and some nice lenses which may be near enough to your D700 for bulk and weight and when I'm carrying just the body and lens I do feel the weight. The first time I went out with my G1 I actually checked the bag a couple of times to make sure it was still there :D so I'd say that MFT+lens does save significant bulk and weight over DSLR+lens even when it's just a body and one lens in a bag.

I used to have a GF1 and I'd say that it's only winter coat pocketable when fitted with a pancake lens, I have the 20mm f1.7.

I love the GX1 with either the 14 or 20mm pancakes - still slightly bigger than a true compact camera, but so much easier to carry around than a big DSLR.

I think you made the right choice - to compliment a DSLR you want small, light with superb image quality - the GX1 fits these requirements. :thumbs:

The OM-D is not much bigger (mainly the hump on the top that makes the difference) but not as pocketable. If you were selling the DSLR then I'd say the OM-D would be a better all round camera.
 
Thanks Woof Woof, I think for me its more the size than weight, the weight doesnt bother me. This camera is basically going to be a grab and go camera I can leave lying around for snaps and shove in a coat pocket etc. for when I really dont want to carry a bag.

Id like to keep the D700 as my primary camera as I really do love the images it produces with my fast primes.

I noticed the ISO performance of the GX1 is a little better than the G3 and a little worse than the OMD, is that about right Alan?

I tend too carry the GX1 on me most the time yet if im going somewhere like the park with the kids i would tend too take the OMD with a wrist strap as its still easy too carry but that little more bigger than the GX1

Any reason you take the OMD instead of GX1, besides the obvious benefit of Viewfinder?
 
Im more used too handling the Olympus, it has edge on the high ISO, IS built in and i prefer colour... and if i have a 12-35mm on it'd all be weather sealed too :)
Yet im always that bit wary of weather sealing on any camera if im being honest :suspect:

I do like them both though tbh they are nice cameras
 
Thanks for confirmation, I think the GX1 is going to be more convenient for my needs as a grab n go and will produce images I would guess be on par with the OMD at the ISO I shoot at (800 max). Im used to shooting RAW and slight tweaking so OOC Jpeg performance doesnt matter.

Think Ill just save a few quid. You guys have been a great help. Either way Ive ordered the 20mm and want the Oly 45.

The GX1 is currently £300 at SRS and there's a £50 cashback promotion so effectively £250 afterwards so a very good price really if your going for new,
I picked up my very good condition GX1 over at AVF for £190 last week :D

I'd say it is perfectly usable upto ISO3200 :thumbs:
 
I actually bought one but wanted to make sure it fits my needs before opening and discuss with some experienced owners of the camera, just opened the box, really like it. Much nicer than wife's gf3 and the bounce flash is a nice addition.

Glad you took the plunge and opened the box :thumbs:

The GF3 is a little dumbed down in comparison and is the 12mp older sensor. The GX1 is virtually identical in size, shape and button layout to the legendary GF1.
