"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

I love the beach shots UK?

Yes, somewhere between Marske and Saltburn in Cleveland. It's a great beach and I'm often there. These were all taken with a 55mm lens on a G1 but a wide angle would do the beach more justice. It's lovely.

Alan . . . if I'm honest, nothing much is floating my boat at the moment . . . life in general
CJS

There have been times in my life when I've hit a low and stayed there for some time without being able to see an end but one thing that keeps me going is sheer bloody mindedness. I'm determined to live and more... thrive... if only to annoy my enemies and the Universe in general :D

I like your set, one often asks the question, do we need the supper-dupper quality from a realy expensive camea...

I've long since accepted that I'm not a pro and my pictures will never be printed at super duper size and displayed on a gallery wall. All that now matters is that they're good enough for me and whoever around me takes an interest in them or better still gets a little joy from them.

As I've said before, I'm still not getting the best out of my gear, but I'll keep trying.

Anybody using this lens - Panasonic Lumix G Vario PZ 45-175mm f/4-5.6 ASPH Power OIS Zoom Lens

Tried it at SRS,and it seemed very good.

I had it for a while and I must admit it was great. Particularly loved the internal zoom and it felt much better than the 45-200. I just found it to be a little too soft for my liking after mainly using primes and I sent it back. Plus I'm almost ready to try something other than m4/3 and I'm in the process of getting rid of some stuff.

Certainly best of the many slow zooms that Panasonic seem to be pushing out though.

At the price it was and the handling then that sold it to many, the G1 was the bees knees, it still takes some beating for my requirements, a lot of negatives apeared over the handling of later models . . . ?

. . . there is always better 'but at what cost'? For me, I am happy how the G1 presents to me, I like the 'front wheel', neaver take pics at night, althought I have used it for some decent sunsets, one tonight, had not got it with me:bang:

I've been less than happy with 'photography', recently . . . its fadding in interest for me . . . not 'fadding away' just fadding:shrug: I'm better of keeping myself to myself. . . :coat:

Alan . . . if I'm honest, nothing much is floating my boat at the moment . . . life in general is doing its best to get me down, got my 'grumpy head on' . . . but I will not give in, thanks for the reply and the pictures, this alone makes me feel a lot better. I'll pop out the other end at some time soon?

I like your set, one often asks the question, do we need the supper-dupper quality from a realy expensive camea, in any case its usualy the lens?? . . . 99% I doubt it:shrug: In my case probably 100% of the time. Another question, does one have the experiance to apreciate or make meanigfull use of such picture quality against the high cost and all the other impracticalities? My important factors are handling, weight, view finder, the animated rear screen and a picture that I can look at and enjoy on the computer . . . the G1 does it for me.

CJS

The truth is you can take perfectly good pictures with a cheap point and shoot these days - and the G1 is much better than that.

I think all of us loose sight of the important things like taking a photo just so that it gives us a way of capturing a moment or memory and this is far more important than how big your lens is or how many megapixels you're packing.

When my loved ones are gone I want to be able to look at photos of them and I will cherish these forever - it will matter not one iota what camera it was taken with. Just like my polaroids of my grandparents that are curled up at the corners, creased and faded.

The Internet has a lot of negatives if you ask me and this equipment section is a good example - there is far more activity in here than any of the photo sharing sections!

I hope things turn around for you Mr CJS and that you keep taking photos for your own pleasure and memories.

I certainly intend to heed my own advice - before it's too late :nono:

Personally I think you're a valued member of our little club here and I hope that you will both keep shooting and keep sharing your shots and views here.

Here's a few of mine, I may have posted them (or some of them) before but the reason for posting them today is that I was looking at them yesterday and thinking how they compare to shots from my 5D. IMVHO these shots have nothing to be ashamed of and could have been taken with something much more expensive. Mixed in with 5D shots anyone would have to pixel peep very closely if they were going to detect that they weren't 5D shots.

At 100% on my screen the detail is very good in each, and all taken with a camera and lens combination that cost under £150.

Agreed - these shots look great Alan

Enjoying my G3a lot more now.

Not sure if double posts are allowed so I will drop the link in to those posted in the other forum section

Thank you the two Alan's, words of encouragement that I whole hartedly agree with.

I seem to get that way when I get down, its 'bloody mindedness that keeps me going'. I will not collaps in a jibering heap . . . although some times, inside, that how I feel. Pull ones self up by the boot laces, a few encouragig words goes a long way but at the end of the day its down to the individual . . . dont upset loved ones on the way.

There you go I'm feeling better already:lol:

I need to get life sorted, retired recently, all the best laid plans have been totaly dashed . . . so I am at a bit of a lose at the moment???

Alan, I note you are in the Cleveland area, my partner Hazel is a Hartlepool lass, dont call her a 'monkey hanger', she gets real upset :bat: . . . Nice part of the world, When I retired, I sugested we go back closer to her home to live, she is the oldest of 10!!! . . . she has got used to the soft South East life.

I used to do a lot of business in the North, very down to earth people, there word is there bond, call a spade a spade, dont hold grudges, I'd go tomorrow but . . .

Alan, I note you are in the Cleveland area, my partner Hazel is a Hartlepool lass,

I was born here, I left, and I returned :D

Funny how things go in circles given enough time. This is where I was born, on the right in what is now a field.

As someone said upon seeing this picture... "Usually we say, I remember when this was all fields so it makes a change to say I remember when this was all houses."

Hartlepool has gone through changes too. Who'd have though it'd have a marina for yuppies?

Ideas please for a case for the GX1 and 14 or 20mm pancakes?

I like the look of the official one..

cgk.jpg

Infact I got one of these free with the last GX1 I bought back in June , but sold it and at £60 to buy another one they're stupid money :shake:

But, I don't like the fact that the half that fixes to the tripod mount means the battery/sd card access is a no no without unscrewing it evey time.

So I want the smallest pouch/bag/case that takes just the body and pancake lens and allows the camera to be removed completely for use

Not too much to ask surely?

Loving the G1 shots, love the G1, still the best handling body I've used.

Received my G5 today, not really going to have a chance to play until the weekend. Initial impressions are it's pretty much as I expected. Like the improved screen, eye sensor and the non mechanical sounding shutter mode.

Seems that the original Lowepro lens case I discovered as the perfect fit for my GF1 + 20mm back in 2010 is no longer sold :nono:

They do a new version which is referred to as the Lowepro Lens Case 9x13 which looks exactly the same :cuckoo:

And for those that were around in 2010 on TP - read a few pages of the GF1 thread in the link above - serious case of de ja vu !!

I'll be interested in your feedback on DR and higher ISO performance.

I'd much rather stick with Panny than get an Oly as I like to use my camera with the screen turned to the body most of the time.

I have a Lowepro Apex 100 AW and my GF1+20mm fitted fine, it'll just take my G1+20mm but it is tight.

I'll let you know ;)

It's really going to be the camera the G3 should have been, nothing earth shattering. Now thinking of getting my G3 IR converted rather than selling it.

I shall be ordering a G5 later tonight or tomorrow....

That's why I'm ordering one now rather than waiting for the reviews ;) (and thanks for posting the info...). The usability & ergonomics have convinced me that it's worth taking a punt at that price. They seem to have solved the issues I have with controlling the G3....

Mmmmm, pancakes... [/Homer]

It is indeed a very fine lens. It would be nice it if focussed a bit quicker, but I guess we can't have everything we wish for!

Folks posted some G1 shots earlier, here is one I took a couple of weeks ago with 7.5mm fisheye. Not bad for a £95 body ;)

Gotta love the Panny Summilux 25 (with G3)... Looks even better at 2000 x 1500

I didn't realise the G5 had been released into the wild now, I've been on holiday for the last week and it seems to have passed me by.
I must say though, I've fallen in love with my G2 again. Over the week that I was away I took something in the region of 800 photos and although I had to ditch a load of them because of my poor panning skills at my first air show, I was still left with nearly 500 to sort through.
I'll be taking the camera to Clacton air show on Thursday so hopefully I can grab a load more nice shots, particularly as the Vulcan will be flying. Can't wait! :D

Was hoping to have had a play with a g5 today, but Park Cameras won't have stock until september. But I did have a play with the sigma 19mm and 30mm lenses, which are super little lenses. Af is very good, nice and quiet. They look tiny on a G3 body. The 30mm gives a great perspective.

Also at photokina, sigma will be releasing some new lenses for m4/3. I have no idea what, but was told to watch this space! That will be an interesting announcement.

I like this Julian :) and as you say for a s/h G1 at £95 great results!!.

Was going to sell my Samyang fisheye and buy a Canon 15mm again for the DSLR but decided to keep it after all and use the Pany G1 for any fisheye shots.

I have not fully deserted the format, it still has a place in my kit bag, in fact I have just replaced the Pany 20mm pancake I recently sold :).

Thanks Mal, the 7.5mm is just fantastic, I don't use it anywhere near enough

Nice photos Simon.
Which Canon adaptor do you have?

Took out my new to me lenses today down to the De La Warr Pavilion, where they had loads of Minis and Scooters.

Olympus 45mm on Olympus EP-1

Took my new G5 out for a play this evening, the handling is really spot on, the inclusion of the function lever works perfectly for selecting ISO. Used with my 100-300 it felt well balanced. Love it!

Compared to the G1, how does the histogram square look?
My G1's yellow histogram box is so much better to use than Olympus' lower bar in white ... has the G5 changed colour or position in the EVF?

You should be using the G5 thread ;)

I don't know what the G1 looks like, but the histogram for the G5 is the same as the G3 - a square box that is white if you have no exposure compensation, yellow if you do. As to position, you can move it anywhere on the screen.
