"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Two kits seems to make the most sense, sadly.

If starting without a bag full of lenses I'd go for Nikon or possibly Sony as they seem to have the best sensors at the moment. The only significant USP for Canon seems to be the MPE and I'm not bothered about that.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Sony as they were my first into into DSLRs with the A300 and then two A700's and I can honestly say I don't think I've enjoyed my photography as much as I did with my second A700.

So the A77 would be high on any list particularly as I'm now not too bothered in regards the OVF/EVF debate!!!

Does seem some cracking Nikon lenses too though!
 
Between the 2 of you, you have totally summed up my thoughts, experiences, reservations and issues in about 4 posts - so I thank you for that and won't bother adding anything.

Suffice to say that I too have resigned myself to have to run 2 systems, what they are though I still don't know (I secretly loved the D800 I borrowed from work last week but can't help thinking the 5D3 is a better all-rounder)

And so it goes on :cuckoo::bang::help:

I'm almost at this point, I love the compactness of M4/3 but there are situations where now size isn't what I'm so worried about... I also feel that for the value of the m4/3 kit I have I could have a top end APS-C DSLR with a decent set of lenses...
 
I never thought that mft would replace the DSLR when I got it... I got it for travel use only. But I will be selling all the APS-C kit now and running FF & MFT both. I love my 5D3 and lenses way too much and they get used 90% of the time.

Going back to film days I had a 35mm SLR and a couple of compacts / rangefinders. I chose what I wanted to take depending on what, where and who with I was shooting.

I suppose nothing has therefore changed, really, I still have two main cameras and the addition of a LX5, Ixus and Medion compacts which I didn't have equivalents to in my film days.

As Vaizki, APS-C DSLR has been squeezed out. I sold my APS-C only lenses and then later sold my 20D too.

I got an e-pM1 (I still use a G1) and found indoor focus with the bundled kit zoom to be very fast indeed, shot by shot. No real pause between half-press and the green box/beep focus confirmation.
Personally I don't use that lens and should really sell it but if I wanted fast AF it'd be on all the time.
I mention the e-pM1 since the kit prices are very low for a lot of tiny camera.

I have a GX1 with both power zooms and the Summilux 25mm. My 7D now sits in a cupboard next to its 70-200 zoom! Agonising over whether to invest in the 12-35mm and continue with the easy to carry kit, or to buy a 17-55mm for the 7D and get it out again. The Panasonic is so handy to carry around though :)

To be honest, I've not really looked into the Olympus models at all so I will definitely do some research on it.
I'd much rather have one format in the kitbag and spend my money on decent lenses than have to have two separate sets of kit to cover what I need.

I'm leaning towards the 12-35mm for image quality and convenience of size, it seems such a shame to leave the 7D on the shelf though! Only have the 70-200 2.8 at the mo. sold my 24-105 to my son in law with the intention of getting a 24-70 - then they all vanished from the shops !! Mk2 is out of my price range :( !

Yes, I am. I mentioned in my post previous to that one that I'm looking at DSLRs again as I don't feel my G2 can keep up. :)
 
Seems to me . . . the 'grass is always greener' . . . ? :shrug: Why not get the wow factor out of the existing kit, still working on that one myself . . . the 'eyes have it' . . . :)

I have a big canon kit and over this weekend whilst being in Lincoln, I so wanted a nice light weight kit, I got so fed up of carrying my big backpack around. The kit will never go, I just need something to compliment it. I used my dads G3 for a little bit yesterday at the railway museum in york, whilst it was a nice camera to use, it certainly made my mind up that I wouldn't buy one for myself, I just don't like its handling, I kept thinking I was going to drop it. I look forward to trying out a G5 to see if the grip and handling are improved.

Have a look at the G1, old technology, in truth, how much technology and gizmos does one need:shrug: . . . they are avaliable used, very cheap. Looking at the G5 pics and specs., I have the feeling they have come full circle on handling? . . . the G1 handless like a decent camera should . . . IMHO.

I'm hanging on to mine, fitted a 14-42mm power zoom recently, light, compact and practical, everything at your fingertips, its not a DSLR . . . neither is it a housbrick? . . . make that a whole bag full of house bricks :naughty:

Yup :D The DR is limited but the in view histogram helps and you can balance the exposure for best effect and boost the shadows a little post capture and assuming you can cope with that the only other real issue is noise at the highest ISO's and even that can be coped with if you are careful.

Like most things in life a woof woof, work within the limitations and its suprising what can be achived, make the most of what is avaliable to its limit, get it right and the limits can be streched that little bit extra . . . :naughty:

I followed the g1 with great interest when it was released on birdforum, finally someone released a camera ideal for digiscoping wildlife. The results were excellent and it certainly is a very capable camera. The only thing I would like would be video capabilites. I like the idea of the G2 but I find the 2nd hand prices way too high for a camera which has been superceeded by the G3 and now the G5.

One of other problems dare I admit it, is wanting the best! I reckon I am getting to critical of what I want to have and what I want it to do. I also fell in love with an Olympus OM-D which just blew everything out the water for handling! A fe weeks ago I looked at a Nikon J1 twin kit, loved it and if I had the money there and then, I would have brought it, but I didn't and then my mind was doing over time again :bonk:

Working within limitations comes compromise, I to, have the 'want the best, gean' . . . I have come to accept that I aint that good, dont have the time or the money, so I compromise and am happier for it . . . taken a few years to learn that one, I'll keep working on it, may be I will get good enough :shrug:

What's "best" is subjective.

If I was being playful I could claim that some older cameras give sharper and less noisy images than some newer cameras. By some measures of "best" some older models are therefore "better" than the newer models :D

My dad had a saying woof woof, . . . 'its the craftsman that understands how to makes his tools work' . . . most of those tools refered to, were old and warn but the job they produce was the 'best' . . . :thumbs:
 
At the moment my tools of choice are my bought used G1 and Minolta 55mm f1.7. I get a sort of perverse pleasure from using used and some would say outdated kit.

Whenever I think that my kit is holding me back I Google my way to shots other people are getting with the same kit. Someone is always getting better shots than me and I then have to accept that the kit isn't holding me back at all and I need to work harder to get the best out of it.

I totaly agree woof woof, I like 'old' . . . :thinking: I like 'me' then :lol: There is something about kit from days gon by . . . often, not that many days? I still have my Dads old 35mm camera from the 50's, I dont use it, but it sits on my table and I pick it up often, feels so good in hand. Considering the simplicity, he took some wonderfull pictures.

Oh really, what with?

I'm wanting to pick up an Olympus E-PM1 now that I've looked into them, but I go on holiday on Friday so have neither the funds to pay for it or the time to get it delivered.

I still don't think I'm getting the very best from my G1 and as ever cleverer processing software is developed the few shortcomings it has seem to matter less.

Thats made my day, postie just deliverd my £50 cash back cheque from Panasonic for the 14-42 power zoom lens, very quick considering I sent the wrong infomation in the first place and they had to write and ask for the correct stuff . . . doh!

To be honest I'm glad I did now, because I've wound myself up into such a frenzy recently - om-d, 5d3, gx1, d5100, d800, dslr, m43, 7d, g3, dslr again, m43, d7000, 5d2, om-d, gx1, nikon, evf, panasonic, olympus, buy, buy, sell - that I have given myself a major headache and now can't be bothered with any of it.

Going to have a rest from it all and try to enjoy taking photos with my current kit (D5100, 18-55 & 35mm prime) - which some people would be more than pleased with!

Thanks again to woofwoof and cjs - I haven't taken a single photo recently because I've been too busy with GAS.
