"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Well, having used my G3 and G2 today i want to keep the G2!!! I prefer the grip of the G2 and the feel of it. So, looks like i will have to sell my G3 now!! Wife was annoyed when i told her i had the 2!!

Anyone after a G3? lol :D

I have one of these and it's very well corrected. In tests you'll see a sort of wave to straight lines but in real world use you wont see any true distortion. You'll see perspective but not true distortion.

I just shot these just for you... 5D @ 12mm with no correction at all...

And there you go by assuming I mean distortion as rendering straight lines as curves ;) You have an extreme perspective distortion in that lens - look at the verticals. The further you go from the vertical door line, the further away you are from vertical.

I have a Sigma 12-24, I have a 5D2. I am very aware of how it renders images and how critical it is to get it truly parallel to verticals so that they are rendered as straight lines. It does, however, compress 120 odd degrees of field of view into an image if rendered as a normal image (i.e. as a picture viewed from a normal distance) that will look well wierd. Distortion? Yup.. in my book it is.... Crazy distortion, but in a good way.
 
Dammit! I soooooo wanted a bloo G2. But that Tesco offer is just too good to ignore. And I got an extra 2% cashback.

Anyone got any bloo paint? :D

Great shots, which lens(es) are you using?

I know what you mean about the D7K, I'm finding it a challenge to get the best out of it, and have to say I've had way more fun with the G2 that I got shortly after it, but I suspect that's due to having to figure out the G2's controls and nuances whereas the D7K is basically a swankier version of my D90. Oh, and having the G2 on me instead of not having space for a DSLR probably helps too :)

I'm seeing the Nikon as a long-term investment tho, don't intend buying any more DSLR's for a very long time. I'm sure I've said that before ;)

That's exactly why I sold my Canon 5D2 and all my lenses. put simply I had more fun with m43 gear.

Hmmm. Nice try buddy :lol: ...

The Siggy does not display extreme distortion. It does not even display extreme perspective distortion, if there is such a thing. All lenses have the same perspective, but perspective is not distortion.

You best stop digging :lol:
 
Great to see so much well deserved praise for the G2, I could'nt resist the incredible Tesco offer either, I'm going through a new learning curve and putting the camera through it's paces, only have the 14-42 kit lens at present, the 100-300 is tugging at my wallet though, and the £50 Panasonic Cash Back offer is another incentive :clap: (it runs until May 31st).

I can't believe the size and weight difference between the G2 and my Nikon D300, especially when I've got the Sigma 150-500 attached :eek: I'm going to spend the Summer (if we get one :cool:) travelling a tad lighter :thumbs:

Yeah I went dashing off to buy a G2 over Easter thinking that price would NEVER last... How wrong I was :lol:

Be interested to hear how the bigma compares with the 100-300, field of view of the siggy on crop will be fairly close to the panny :thumbs:

Sarah, if you press the button bottom left "quality" and + sign, just keep pressing the + sign and the picture in Live View keeps magnifying.
 
I still haven't pulled the trigger on the Tesco G2 deal. I'm really tempted, but I'm not sure what its got over the G1 that I have. I just can't decide if its worth the extra spend.

Well, i bought the G2 and then went and bought a G3 too!!!! I liked the G2 but something was niggling in my mind about the compactness etc of the G3. Didnt tell the wife but i bought the G3 too!!

Thing is, i prefer the G2 to hold etc. Something about it that feels right for me so i decided to keep it. Wife is now making me sell the G3!! :lol:

For what it would cost its almost impossible not to consider the upgrade as being sensible.

After selling the new kit lens and the G1 it will probably cost around £40 to upgrade. You gain HD video, the touch screen (which is far more than just a gimmick, just touch to focus and touch menu make it worthwhile), and the more conveniently placed thumb wheel as well as other smaller refinements.

And you're the one now trying to make the distinction between perspective and barrel distortion... You even mention it in your post ;)

I didn't mention barrel distortion.

Look. Believe what you want but if you think that the Siggy displays extreme distortion of any kind you are simply wrong. Point a 50mm up at the same angle and the straight lines will be at the same angle.

You seem up for an argument that simply isn't worth having and it spoils the tone of this thread so that's my last word on the subject except to urge you to shoot some example shots, examine them and learn from them.

With the brighter conditions here I've really enjoyed my GF1 again. I've been mainly using the 14-45 for it's range and IS in video and the 25mm 1.4 CCTV lens. I still find the 20mm too slow and clunky for anything other than posed portraits so look forward to getting my 14mm back when I get home :)

I'm flying home tomorrow so will hopefully get some more shots on the way back to the airport and in Dubai on the transfer.

Interesting read that, ta :-) I do think he's failed to pick up on the lack of OEM lens choice on m43 tho, although I'm aware that'll get sorted at some point, especially with stuff like the OM-D coming along.

Well after my dilly dallying and dithering in the classifieds over a Panasonic 100-300 I thought what the heck and have bought one after all :D
 
well - I personally think that m4/3rds lenses are the best, as they care about the system, not like canon's apsc for example where there is pretty much only one lens - 17-55mm usm the rest of the good ones are 35mm and don't make a lot of sense on apsc.
 
Well that's a rather wet week over for us in the Peak District :)

I took both my M4/3 gear and also the 7D with 5 lenses but the bag containing the 7D and lenses has never seen daylight!!

I expect I have a few keepers despite the miserable weather but who cares how many I have, the main thing is I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience!!

Few posts back i mentioned how i bought both the G2 and G3 and after trying the G3 felt that the G2 was better for me and that i am thinking of selling the G3.

Well, after some more 'Handling' i am now more confused. Not sure which to keep now.

The G3 produces stunning pictures, as does the G2 but the G2 'feels' better in my hands.

The G3 is smaller but not by much. It is def an improvement over the G2 technology wise. Some little niggles about the G3 that keep pushing me towards selling it but i am not 100% convinced!!!

I need pushing in the right direction!! lol

For all the handling issues I have with the G3, I don't mind it when coupled with the 100-300. I'd not get rid of it though, as you say produces some lovely images.

I will try and help you with that decision:), I have the G1,2,and 3 and for me and also Julian (Shrubmonkey) the best handler is the G1.

Personally I do not like the thumbwheel on the rear, especially on the G3 where in manual I find it difficult avoiding pressing the wheel too hard and and accidentally changing from shutter to aperture and vice versa, I also can accidentally change the iso settings. Although I prefer the wheel on the front I do not have the same problems with the G2. Both the G1 and G2 just feel right in the hands whereas the G3 to me just feels too small and does not grip well.

I just got the cashback from a 45-200mm dumped into my PayPal account, one week after applying online for it. So easy, and quick too.
 
I've been thinking about going for a Nex 7 or a Fuji X Pro 1 but lack of lenses and bugs and reports of poor focus are stopping me at the mo so I've been thinking of committing to MFT a bit more.

I have the 25mm f0.95, 20mm f1.7 and 14-42mm. I've been thinking of getting a 14-140mm and the Panny 25mm f1.4.

What's stopping me is that I'm still not happy with FBW no marking lenses and I don't know if I want to spend another penny on a system which seems best to me when used with manual lenses.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest!

The Panasonic offer mentions paypal charges, do you get £50.00 or do paypal get there cut?
