"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

What's the f-pro mount? Isn't it just a screw thread?

In answer to my own question ....

The term "F-Pro" pertains to the mount style only...the F-Pro rings are thicker than a slim filter's rings and thinner than the traditional filter rings to reduce/eliminate vignetting on wide angle lenses.

Just ordered one - thanks Mal & Ron

Great shots and a great idea - would have loved to indulge in a sweet buffet

Thank you. They didn't last long !

I see far more people using the DOF on the 20 f/1.7 much more creatively than myself, so I went out yesterday and had a play... Some more results. I say it every time, but I'm so very impressed with this combination.

Some shots of St Andrews...

I believe the horizon is a tad low to the left, but not much in it. Lovely shots by the way.

Loaded up my GF1 with black and white film and went for a walk yesterday - 26.5 miles around Wolverhampton in 8hrs 25minutes. Rubbish weather but a few shots of some interesting dereliction on the way round

Thanks. Something riveting to look at until the rain stopped. (I'll get me coat)

first 3 are real dof bumper shots
the last i think i would have taken as well but not with the central theme
i feel this tends to split a shot un necessarily
what do you think?

No1 is a real keeper Geoff. Nice use of DOF

no 1 for an iconic centralised shot needs some adjustment and correction of verticals
the other 2 hit the spot
thats a fair cracking pace considering, stopping to photograph, chimp, have a pee, drink, snack etc
our walking club average 2 miles per hour with stops on a 8 -10 miler...even on the flat

Hi All,

I arrived in Bangalore this morning with my GF1, 20mm, 14-45, 50mm OM 1.4 and 25mm CCTV lens taking up less room than my 40D and 1 lens would take :)

After leaving the airport, I was greeted by a wall of taxi drivers all waving name cards at me;

After finding the right guy he took me on a standard crazy 90 minute taxi ride to the airport passing an array of buildings that are hard to work out if they're being built or being demolished..

Getting nearer to the city the traffic becomes less ducking and diving and more crushing but so long as you beep your horn everything's ok!

Finally arrive at the Leela Palace where the peace and tranquillity is a world away from the street 50 yards away...and relax!

So far, the GF1 has been perfect as a small camera delivering excellent quality. The 14-45 is still a fantastic lens and I definitely prefer it to the 20mm with it's clunky focussing. I'm loving shooting the hectic Bangalore street scenes from the taxi although it would be good to get out and about in the city too, maybe later on in the week :)

Cheers

keep at it!! good work...reminded me of jaipur
you cant do any pp though to rectify any issues?
i love my 14-45 as well and am astounded it takes better pictures than i used to take..so i thought
cheers
geof

Thanks Geof. These have all had some form of PP applied to them via Lightroom 3 except the Real Estate shot that is pretty much straight out of camera.

The 14-45 is brilliant and I'd forgotten just how sharp it is having sold my original one to buy my 14mm. I picked this one up last week to bring along for some more flexibility and I'm glad I did :0)

Cheers

Great Bangalore shots Steve, I visited Bangalore a few years ago on business, crazy place.

Love the mono shot the best

Has anyone tried adapting macro lenses to a G-series? I was taking some orchid shots in bright daylight a few weeks back with my D90 & Tamron 90mm and getting lovely results. Out of curiosity, decided to bung the lens on the GF2 and the results were patchy at best when viewed on a monitor, just not particularly sharp or punchy to my eyes... Tried RAW and JPG on both to try and rule that out, was manually focusing with both, both on tripod, and using the lens wide open on both.

Am I just expecting too much from the GF2 sensor?

Max stoppage F8 before bad defraction destroys the sharpness.

I shoot macro with my GF1 and an OM 50mm 3.5 macro with good results. I posted a couple 2 pages back (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=4594522&postcount=4479) and my other shots are in my GF1 set on Flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevelloyd/sets/72157626319286089/

I saw those, for some reason I ignored them as I didn't recognise the lens... Where's the embarrassed smiley? I'll maybe give it another go, wondering if 90mm is a wee bit too long and it's possible I was causing movement prodding the shutter.

Great pics tho, am going for a proper look now :)

Guys, is the G3 far superior to the G2? I know they are different in a few ways but was wondering what you lot thought?

Having owned both I'd say for IQ and video the G3 is a decent amount better especially in low light, much prefer the handling of the G2 though, I'd have bough a GH2 if it was my main system...

Thanks Geof! I'm very happy with them.
Yeah, I can understand where you are coming from but I couldn't quite get the other angles to work and I did like the way it draws you into the picture.
Perhaps the angles needed working out a bit better! Plenty more opportunities. It's only 10mins away from my flat!:love:

Thank you.

Yeah, really should have a go at adjusting the verticals! Unfortunately the building's not symetrical so it wouldn't be possible to get a properly centralised shot. :shake:

The walk was just a practice run for a 26 mile sponsored event in a couple of weeks. Was pleasantly surprised by the pace we kept up. Not many hills though, which is what we are used to. Ached a bit this morning...

Adobe Lightroom 3. How much is this worth sealed guys? I ask as i got one with a G3 but never opened it and wouldnt know how to use it anyway!

Try downloading the trial version and give it a go. If you like it you wont even have to open the box and load it, just enter your existing serial number.

Have to say that I tried it and really didn't like it at all. It seems to me to be heavily biased towards image filing and cataloguing. Personally I find CS5 much less cluttered and much easier to use however LR is much cheaper. I just couldn't live with it though and to me image processing seems to be an after thought with LR rather than the point.

Well, i will probably try to sell it then as i use Photoshop elements that has everything i need

Does anyone here use their M43 for studio work?
Its a shame the G2 doesnt have a pc sync socket but I will be getting one of the little add on ones for the hot shoe.

I'm hoping to carry on my studio stuff which I used a Canon 40D for and use the G2 instead.

I have a Metz Mecablitz 36 AF-4 flash for sale which is the Panasonic/Olympus M4/3 fitting
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=402789 if anyone is interested as I need one which does manual.

Off camera flash all the way! :)

I am intrigued by the adoption of the 14mm lens amongst fellow m43rds owners. For me, I get 14mm from the kit lens, and the type of shots I would use it for (group shots, landscape) I would prefer to just use the IS on the kit lens on my G2, which helps bring down the shutter for lower light shots. I can't see a major advantage of the 14mm other than size. At that focal length DOF is not particularly advantageous. Would others not agree? What reasons have you guys gone for 14mm prime over the kit?

If I were to get a fixed wide lens, I would go for a proper wide prime like a 7mm or something.

Cheers

Anyway, just picked up a 2nd hand G3 with kit lens with an extra battery, a filter for the lens, bag, SDHC card, some warranty remaining £390

Looking to get a 14mm for it next so if anyone wants to part X a 14mm for a 14-42 with cash? :D

14mm is super quiet and small. Focusing is fast so all in all it's a great lens. Personal preference for me as I prefer primes to zooms.
