"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

You need to set shoot without lens to 'on'.

i have already set to 'shoot without lens' to 'on' in the custom settings so i can use the nikon lenses when set on the 'cust' setting on the mode wheel,as stated i dont seem to be able to set shutter speeds on 'cust'

so tell me how to set the without lens to 'on' ...on the other mode settings so i can use those settings?:bonk:

looks ok..have you tried pix.ie for hosting?
it stores the original up to 4000x3000 which is my biggest
cheers
geof

I have no problem hosting pics on various hosting sites Geof, Flickr, Photobucket, etc, just was not sure about placing someone else's image on my flickr for editing, that is why I set it to private so no one else would see it there.

No need to crop it Geof;)

Not sure where to host the edit as I have never edited someone's image on TP before, hope you can see this as I have it set to private on my Flickr.
Apologies if this is wrong.

The uploaded image doesn't do the camera justice, tbh, as the full size image is pin sharp. I seem to lose the image quality when posting images on here?

Here's another two taken on the same day, in the paddock.

These two images were taken of the Bay of Naples and Sorrento, on a recent visit there. Used both 14-42 x zoom and 45-175 x zoom to see what range it gives. I was pleased with results :)

And while I've got the hang of posting images here's one of my dog after a wash !! Taken with gx1 and 14-42 x zoom. Its caught the fine fur detail on the outline of her coat well. I can't fault it yet :)

Some cracking shots here guys. Really shows just how good these little cameras are.

How much should one expect to pay for a 2nd hand G3 with or without the kit lens?

Totally agree, great shots, nice one folks :)

Thank you ! I find myself walking out with the gx1 more than the heavy Canon now. Much more of a user friendly camera. Even find moving around the menus and buttons easier.

There is a G3 body in the classifieds for £250 (or was earlier today).

I very recently sold a MINT G3/14-42 for £315 and regretted it immediatley.

I have since replaced it, this week in fact, a great little camera.

Not sure, I've had a play and can only get it to do exposure increments. Why do you use custom rather than manual?

Tesco are selling the G2 kit for £199. Is that a good buy / Good camera to buy? It seems nice and small, compact and at least it has an viewfinder.

I do like the G3 but that is way out of my price range.

I could then buy a 14m for the G2. Would that be a good combo as i like to take pics indoors of my family.

Go for it while the offer is still on, it is an excellent camera, preferred by some including myself over the G3, it is a bargain for a combination that started off at more than £600!

Join as a new customer and get another £10 off.

I bought one over Easter weekend and its a great camera, to my SLR obsessed head its far easier to use than the GF2 and the folding screen is ace, seems slightly more crisp than the GF2 screen too. I'm amazed Tesco still have any left at that price, someone speculated that they've maybe bought all remaining stock from the UK distributor, the continued availability suggests that might be spot on...

Not tried the G2 with my 14mm yet and the 20mm seems to live on it so far, but its an excellent lens on my GF2, great for indoor pics with natural light, and its not so wide that your subjects look like the elephant man close up ;)

If you look on the UK hot deals site or whatever its called, there's a mention of the Tesco deal, on that thread should be the code for new customers. Alternatively search back thru this thread for one of my posts that has it on, *** I used it to buy mine. May well have expired, but is worth a bash

Just ordered one and used a £10 Tesco voucher bringing it down to £189!!!

so far the only setting i can use is the custom setting 1-2-3 with the 'without lens' set to 'on' .i want to be able to use other settings/modes including manual but the message keeps coming up as stated previously.i know i must be missing something and the manual is not making it clear how to set the camera to use my non panasonic lenses on all modes

Ah! I see!!!

In your original post I thought that by "menu" you meant the menus you see on the screen but I see now that you mean the modes accessed via the mode dial like Manual, Aperture priority and Shutter Priority etc...? Yes?

If that's the case as you are (like me) using a manual lens you can't use the modes which need to control the lens, like shutter priority. You will be able to use Aperture priority or Manual.

Personally I use Aperture priority most of the time with auto ISO set. I find that this works very well especially with the on screen histogram. I use Manual mode when I need the additional control.

I got my new G2 out for a play yesterday and immediately noticed that when I put my 20mm f/1.7 on to it it won't do continuous auto focus (AFC). If I put it into that mode the camera will say not supported and to put into AFS mode instead. I then googled and was shocked to find that the 20mm is "so slow to auto focus that it won't do continuous AF on anything". Wow. £280 for this lens starts to now look even more concerning. I feel like I wasted my money on this lens to be honest. :(

I can't believe I have never seen anyone mention this. This lens only ever gets praise. Are there any other lenses that will not do AFC that I should be aware about? Is it really that slow so as not to be able to do this function? When I focus with it, it seems ok.
One of the main reasons I jumped onto m43rds was the 20mm prime but I'm sort of a bit miffed I never spotted this before. The extra speed benefit of the lens you can't even use for any moving focus shots as it doesn't support it. I've never heard of a lens not doing this.

I would assume the 25mm does do AFC, but for £500 I'd expect that.

I *think* there are two ways to set the 'without lens' option, one is in the custom menu, the other in the general menu under MY, which should allow you to use the manual modes, once set there you should be ok.

Cant be right surely?

Is this only in continuos focusing mode only?

I noticed that to about the AFC and the 20mm. I only noticed whilst messing about with the menu the day I bought the camera, still not really sure why on a 20mm you would need continuous AF though, maybe video.

I don't know or care to be honest, for what I shoot at 40mm I don't need it to continually focus. Other people may need it to. I either shoot manual or aperutre and centre point.

To be honest, M43 cameras with there contrast AF systems are rubbish at CAF anyway as far as stills are concrrned. This is a function of the contrast detect auto focus system rather than the lenses. As such, I'd nevrt consider using it unless I was shooting video.

Pretty much my take on it too, and one of the reasons I'll not be dumping my DSLR's yet

That said, this does seem to be limited to the 20mm, and it is most definitely a slow focusser. I'll have a mess about later and see what's what...

CAF is over rated anyway :-)

Nothing in the galleries in the link above were shot using it.

Some crackers there :) Be curious to know what camera/lens combo were these taken with? If m43 then I'm seriously impressed!

Must get out and shoot some motorsport, those pics will hopefully give me the butt kick I need!

Oh, and the 20mm sucks for video too, its almost as noisy as my Nikon D lenses  14mm far better for that task.

Panasonic GH2 + 14-140mm (for the majority of shots) and 100-300mm lenses :-)

I finally did it and sold all my canon DSLR gear, m43's all the way for me now, suits my photography subject matter. Going to feel strange having no FF DSLR or L lenses, but was not using them much at all.

Just done the same thing Julian, sold a 5d and a load of Zuikos, seem strange now but will get used to it , money in the bank and back taking pics

Just enjoy

Thanks folks, don't really feel brave just sensible, I'm using m43 more and I had expensive canon sitting in the cupboard. Take nothing away from my 5D2 and the L lenses, I loved that gear, just found I was having even more fun with my m43 cameras :)

Well done Julian, I wish I was as decisive and as brave as you:)

Hmm, I was looking at/reading reviews of gh2's the other day, but a tad out of my price range (for a second system!).

Those really are good shots tho, I'll get on pc soon and look properly, phone screen doesn't do them justice
