"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

I agree with the above!, :)

Reading some posts on this and other forums it's easy to believe that MFT is unuseable at ISO 800 and above, the focus is too slow and you can't get any image quality from such a small sensor.

Some people just can't handle the fact that a camera without a mirror can take good pictures. They remind me of the flat Earth society.

I think it's more that some read comments on internet forums and then engage in Chinese whispers and slag the system off without actually shooting with the cameras and trying to do what they'd do with their own kit... get the best out of it.

Great results Nick, these should put any doubters minds at rest as to what the GF1. / 20mm. and M4/3 in general is capable of!.

Thanks Mal, I certainly hope so! I love my GF1 now.

In other news though, my Dad saw the shots from the GF1 and asked me if my 40D will ever see the light of day again. I mentioned this to my girlfriend and how I could in theory come out with a lot of money by selling my SLR gear, and she said I wouldn't be a "real photographer, with that little camera"! :bonk:

I won't be selling my SLR gear quite yet - MFT isn't quite there for sports YET, but the GF1 is a lot more fun to use at this point in time!

Haven't touched anything remotely DSLR related in around 6 months now. I've decided to get rid of my 50D, 450D and assortment of lenses since the GF1 is all I need for landscape/travel work. The weight & bulk of the 50D with 17-40 is ridiculous compared to the GF1 and the results from the latter are only marginally inferior. Mirrorless is undoubtedly the future.

Thanks for the comments on the Pen y Fan pic - I use Autostitch to stick them all together Geof. The secret to a good stitch is a good amount of overlap

I haven't got a G series camera but I have got a EVIL / Mirrorless camera and I have to agree. They are so much easier to carry around which means I always have it with me

Sadly, that sort of comment and mind set, says it all . . . for me, my G1 does everything and more. The wild flower pics I posted would have been impossible without the animated screen and the general handling of the G1, I just can’t get low enough these days, so I flip the screen out, no problem.

I wonder what sort of furore would go up if we pointed the finger at mobile phones . . . "not a proper phones, far too small and as for waving the finger about" . . . come to think of it ??????

When I was out with my 5D last week I knelt down to take a shot and that wasn't a great idea as I got my jeans dirty and a passing dog tried to have sex with me.

Had I been using the G1 I wouldn't have had these problems.

Lol I have this amusing image in my head

A few more just to show what the GF1 + 20mm is capable of! The only camera i I took with me on my trip to Berlin last week. Apprehensive at it being perhaps the first trip my SLR didn't go on due to only taking hand luggage for the almost 2 week trip, but I was certainly not disappointed.

The combination wows me every time! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for a lightweight alternative to an SLR or a first foray into Digital Photography. But of course you all already know that!!

Great shots. Berlin is a brilliant city. It was a bit too cold when I was there to get out and do much photography but I'd love to go back.

I'm just about to join the gang with a GX1/14-42 (manual) and 45-175 zoom. Good deal at the moment with £50 cashback on each item. In theory the 45-175 should be superb for lightweight treks....its tiny!

Anyway does anyone have any pearls of wisdom about using them? I'm selling my canon g10 as it didn't really cut the mustard, so I'm kind of used to using a viewfinderless camera.

Anyone bought the matched viewfinder for the gx1?

Does lightroom have lens profiles for the two lenses mentioned?

What case would you recommend for this set-up?

It would good to have a range of opinions so that I can ignore them and do my own thing........:bonk:

I'm guessing this may be aimed slightly towards my thread suggesting an NEX5n to replace my gf1? As per my thread, I agree that my initial statement was a little harsh against the gf1 to suggest I was disappointed with the higher ISO shots but that doesn't mean it's not possible to look at alternatives to m4/3rds that may perform better.

I love my gf1 for what it is and have both an 18"x12" print and 30"x20" canvas on the walls from it but there are still better sensors/bodies available. I wouldn't want to get blinkered to the idea that m4/3rds is the only option and daring to suggest it has flaws is a crime! ;0)

Also, I've got no problems with the gf1 focus speed, its the x100 that's lethargic ;0)

I'm going to Bangalore on Sunday and the gf1 will really come into its own because I'm taking the camera, 20mm 1.7, 14-45, 25mm cctv and an OM 50mm 1.4 in a bag that I can just about fit my 40d and one lens in!

Cheers
Steve

With my 25mm CCTV lens and Raynox DCR-250 (and an off camera flash)

To further defend the GF1, these are some examples of what it can deliver in optimum conditions. The only time I'm finding it lacking is shooting in less than optimum conditions hence the comparison to alternative bodies/systems.

It certainly is, definitely one of my favourites. Not "classically beautiful" like you'd say about Paris or Rome perhaps, but it has its places and a certain charm.
The people themselves would make a fantastic project, a lot of 'characters'!

Very nice shot! I remember going here years ago, and being fascinated by the unexploded bomb and the story behind it.
Malta is beautiful and I'd love to back with the camera.

I have to say, after having finally got around to playing with the GF3, I bought one pretty much on the spot! My usual walkabout system is a 60D with 17-55 lens, but although the GF3, 14-42 and 14mm lenses that I now own aren't going to blow the 60D out of the water in terms of IQ, the actual opportunities I get to actually *take* shots are already becoming increasingly common. I'm slightly concerned as to what might happen to all the Canon lenses I own! :-\

Meant to ask actually, what are people's recommendations on a case? Using the 14-42 and the 14mm pancakes, I'm looking at something which won't take up too much bulk, so as not to negate the whole purpose of buying the GF3 in the first place! As a temporary measure, I'm actually keeping the GF3 + pancake lens in the soft pouch that came with the 14-42 lens, and to be honest, it doesn't seem too bad. I'm tempted to go with something similar, if such a thing does exist. I only ask because most of the cases on the Panasonic site are either ridiculously expensive and/or impractical and fugly :-(

I've got the GF1 on my list and keep uming and ahring about it. I think the quality of the first shot has just sold me

Nice one

No problem, happy to help. It certainly shows what the GF1 and 14-45 kit lens can do. That's the shot I've got printed at 18"x12" and looking closely I can see the pattern detail in the denim!

Cheers

I use a Crumpler Cupcake 1500 with the GX1 and those 2 lenses plus the Samyang 7.5mm in there - just. Something bigger would be the Cupcake 2500

I've had this before, and just started buying 52mm step-up rings/lens caps for anything smaller to match the zooms filter size, few quid on eBay for each lens. Means they're always ready for the same size of screw-on filters too :)

Of course, this all goes to buggery if (when?) I buy a 100-300, as a 67mm stepping ring on a 14mm 2.5 is going to look bloody silly

having got my 1st panasonic camera the G2 im now trying to get used to the menu's.specifically the 'custom' menu as it appears this is the only menu i can use with adapter with my Nikon lenses.am i correct on this??.if not please do tell which other menu i can use and what im missing.

if correct please offer your advise on the 'custom' menu so i can get the best from my various m/f nikon lenses,or how you get the best from your own lenses with this G2

thanks in advance

I don't understand, you should be able to access all the menus. I use a manual lens and I can

on the mode dial if i set on anything other than 'cust' a message comes up saying " lens not found-or c (tools) shoot without lens is set to off".i have set 1-2-3 custom settings to shoot without lens so i can shoot with my nikon lenses however i still cannot use any of the other settings on the mode dial other than custom so please tell me how you are using the mode wheel and accessing all menus or how i can set shutter speeds manually or M,S,A,P modes or any of the other modes on the mode wheel with my manual nikon lenses as i thought you could only use these modes with panasonics own a/f lenses

as said previously i might be missing something as i am new to this cameras settings
