"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Don't forget to use one of the £10 discount codes too :)

please explain how, I can't find any way to add the voucher, it says not for items in technology department, and when trying to add says voucher not applicable.

Are you talking about the £10 off for over £75 spend?

I entered the code but it didn't work for me either. As you say, it doesn't include technology items. Unless I missed something.

There's been a few voucher codes around this weekend... Try TDX-H4JW courtesy of hotukdeals ;)

That isn't the "spend £75 save £10" voucher.

TDX-H4JW is the Quidco code (spend £50 on first purchase to save £10), and to confirm, it has just worked for me. But I did use a Quidco link to go back to Tesco.

I'm not sure I ever said it was that specific voucher, but glad you got the discount. For reference I got it from here

No, in fairness, you didn't, that was why I asked in my earlier post (what caused the confusion was someone posted in another thread and called it the "spend £75 save £10" voucher) which unfortunately is on the Tesco Direct homepage, everything got horribly confused until someone mentioned it was a Quidco voucher.

Once that was known it all became clearer and less confusing (and worked at the Tesco checkout ).

I've just found the other thread... Would have been far less confusing if I'd spotted that earlier heheh :D

Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks of their G2's!

OK Ok I confess, I jumped on the G2 bandwagon as well. :) I was keeping the deal to myself because I have been contemplating getting two and I personally believed the supermarket deal you guys are referring to was a pricing error, being like £100+ under most retailers. Curry's still had it listed for £379 in a store I went in yesterday, which admitedly is too high. But being £80 cheaper than even amazon, I was thinking...hmm...

Additionally, when I came to first buy it at the supermkarket store online, I noticed that it claimed to have no stock. This also made me worry. But hey, I went ahead with it. Says it's shipped so all appears good!

Frankly, the G3 is better on paper yes, in that it has a better sensor and does 1080p over 720p of the G2. However, the G2 has an eye sensor that auto turns off the back LCD which is really useful rather than having to switch it off yourself. Some people complain that it is too sensitive when shooting from the waste say, but overall I can see it working and being really good for me. Also the G2 has an external mic jack unlike the G3. The G3 has an internal mic that does stereo over the G2's mono, but as above, external jack for better sound if you want.

Most of all though, the G2 handles nicer. It's true. I picked up both for a while in a store yesterday and I am glad of my decision. Yes the G3 is lovely and portable being as small as can be, but this comes at the expense of not being able to grip it as easily, bigger battery compartment and hence life on the G2 and it just feels more balanced. Finally if you so wish, the G2 is hackable to enable I believe manual video controls and higher bitrates. However, this only seems possible on older stock G2s. Newer ones aren't always hackable. I am hoping that the place we have bought these G2s at, really wanted rid of very old stock. In fact, I would be happy if they were well over a year old stock.

So it went like this:

G2 kit brand new @ £199.99 from tesco direct
- new customer sign up code via quidco @ £10
- quidco cashback @ 3%
= £184.29

Panasonic 20mm prime from John Lewis @ £289
- friends staff discount @ 12.5%
- panasonic cashback on additional lenses @ £50
= £203.71

TOTAL = £388.00

So that's less than about the same as a G3 kit with cashback and I've got a G2 with kit lens and a 20mm prime. I'm quite happy with that. This will be the first time I have had a decent camera since 6 months ago when I sold all my canon gear. :) It all comes mid week. Will let you guys know how I get on and no doubt be back on here to ask questions. In the future I will probably try to pick up the 45mm prime.

I see a lot of praise for the 14mm prime, but I'm not sure I would use it that much for my needs. If I was going to get a wide prime, I'd make it a wiiiide prime. :)

Plan for the future is to pick up a cheap Olympus Pen as they have IBIS and give this to my partner so she can have it as a family point and shoot but can use my 20mm prime and other lenses when she wishes.

There is just one flaw in that plan, the cashback is not available on that kit;)

Can you provide a link to the cashback offer please - I can't see the G2 listed.

Ah well .......................

We still got a bargain though :)

Yeah we did to be fair. :)
Next issue I can see though. I have bought a Panasonic 20mm lens from John Lewis and under the product details it states the lens to be a H-H020, where as on the Panasonic site for cashback, it says that the only lens covered for 20mm is a H-H020E. A quick google turns up a few people asking the difference between them and that there is none, and just a factory marker. I wonder if there are any differences and also whether this will be an issue for claiming cashback? :(

Contact John Lewis now.

Al

Well I've contacted Panasonic. This is turning out to be a cashback farse! lol
Why can't things be simple. I checked amazon and they do not mention H-H020 or H-H020E product code on any of the listing details. So...
I will contact John Lewis as well. :suspect:

EDIT: Checked two other sites. One of them states H-H020 and one has H-H020E. Both have links to £50 cashback for the offer. Hmm...

I'd assume that they're the same thing and that the E perhaps just indicates a European version.

I think they're the same thing tbh. I'd just whack the cashback claim in.

Is the cashback claim on a lens not conditional on buying a kit/body already in the offer? by that I am not saying it is, I just recall reading that on the offer page.

Even if there's no cashback it still looks like a good deal to me.

i am going to have a go at manual focussing to see if its of any advantage on my G1 and 14-45 super kit lens
also i thought leaving the focus on afc all the time to cater for the situations where one is trying to focus an object which may move...does this sound a bit daft?
cheers

got my 2 G2's from tesco on saturday and they are new in sealed boxes. First impressions are they are not bad and seem solid build for the price, vidio use is easy and the picture quality is ok in jpeg need to play with the settings to get raw images, AI button again is simple to use, off to have a play to see if I can improve the picture quality to very good.
Any tips for the best settings to use?

Thom Hogan has put some noise reduction and sharpening settings on his Sansmirror site. I tried them for my G1 and I think they're good.

Shoot RAW is my advice.

Here's Thom's settings...

Other than that I normally boost the contrast, saturation and maybe vibrance depending upon the shot. All this in RAW.

I don't know if manual focus will be that much of an advantage unless you are setting focus at infinity or some other distance for depth of field or zone focus reasons. Other than those uses I think I'd be tempted to leave the AF on and just tweak it manually if required or if the AF latches onto the wrong thing.

I only use centre spot focus myself although these days I mostly use a manual lens anyway.

What's the deal with batteries for the GX1? Do you have to buy official ones or will third party do?

Well having decided to move away from Panasonic and just shoot Canon (mainly driven by the desire to get a new lens) I sold the last of my Panasonic stuff (GF1 & 20mm) on Wednesday... however the cashback offers have tempted me back on board as I've just ordered a GF3 & 14mm! I knew I'd be back to somepoint but had intended to last a bit longer...

Bought a GX1 from here which came with a third party battery. That worked just as well as the original Panasonic one. So unless at some point Pana releases a firmware for the GX1 that stops the third party ones working is a whole different story.

I am giving up on Pana though, I have had a GX1, an LX5 and an LX3 I have liked none very much at all. The thumb wheel on the back of the GX1 does not feel very nice, seems like it can stop working any minute, the JPEGs out of it are average and pushed a bit shows a fair bit of noise even at 800 ISO.

RAWs do not have much headroom to play with, and I find very hard to comprehend the menus. Despite having no problem with a D40, D7k a K-5 and an Olympus which I had only for a very little while.

I think I am talking myself into buying an OM-D

5 days. Good going. :bonk:

Loving my GF3 + 14mm combo. Taken about 600 pictures since I got it a week or so ago. Mostly of my 6month old but it's great for that. My dslr was too big and in your face.

I had a play with a GX1 in Park cameras today, seemed very solid, much better than i was expecting. Not sure the menus are bad, seem fine to me, plus I've had some great results from Raws on my G1 and G3.

Just bought my wife a G2 and seeking advice on sourcing bag and I have searched this thread but hoping for kind souls helping to save reading too many posts :help:

We would like to be a really snug fit to take only the basic camera with its kit lens and nothing else (such as lipstick type of things- my wife's I hasten to add )

Thanks in advance of any help

Sorry to bump this but any suggestions would be good

look at some of the crumpler bags jimmy bo type should do

As mentioned before I hope to use my Olympus Zuiko 200mm with the G2. Does anyone else use largish manual lenses with their G2 - particularly on a tripod? I just wonder whether there would be too much strain on the tripod bush of the camera with this lens attached.

Thanks,
Al

I would not fancy hanging any long Zuiko, without a tripod collar, on any Panny on a tripod.

I have a GH2 and would not do it with that.

Not worth the risk IMVHO.

Get some bean-bags.
